About flash's death, and a working alt program...

I have bought expensive animations that run using flash, so to wake up one day and realize that nobody can view them anymore in browser was.. not a good day. For a while I have been looking around for ways to view swf files again, something not too complicated, something not too unsafe and well. I found it.

https://ruffle.rs#

Ruffle is surprising good. In 2minutes I had a working in-browser way of viewing all those nice things again. Now I will give a big WARNING that ruffle is beta as all hell and does not work perfectly with all flash things yet... but they are trying and are updating daily. Out of everybody, I put my money on them and I wanted to share this fact since it might save you guys hours or days of googling.

I use Vivaldi which is chrome based and it works perfectly fine. Firefox and other browsers have been tested and all work good too. They have install instructions and its pretty easy. Long live flash.

Well, I mean, it's not like we weren't told in 2012 that they were going to do this.

I bought a new pc recently, which means I had to reinstall a lot of stuff...
You never realize how much is missing until its gone lol

Kinda like when I reinstall my own system. All those little tweaks you make over the years too. :)

Adobe has a flash player that you can download off their website that you can just drag and drop any swf file to. It's free and doesn't even require installation! Download the content debugger right off their website!

https://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/debug_downloa...

It's nice to have options!

Those are not in-browser viewers.
As in, able to view and play flash while browsing firefox or chrome.
But yeah, having a projector is also nice for files you have downloaded.

Huh. I didn't know they can still be downloaded after the Flash browser app goes extinct.

Ruffle. It should be emulating flash better than flash did within a year or two

Every time someone mentions Flash dying, I always like to repost this video. Ruffle's mentioned in here, too.

Flash is far from dying, imo. Adobe has ended support, which is understandable, but to say that Flash is gone for good is way off the mark. Glad to see it's working out for you

Hm well, considering they stopped support, took down many download links and are pushing kill-switches in windows updates I would say they are at least attempting to kill it.

I just use adobe's flash player myself. Don't even need to install it. Just associate flash files with it where ever you have it (in google drive folder for me) and run :)

Sounds better than what Newgrounds is offering.

Good to hear there is alternatives. And to comment on a few things here:
yes Microsoft pushed out a date based kill switch that was an arse to work around.

And Newgrounds is actually integrating Ruffle as well as working on other things so thats cool.

The projector I downloaded about a year ago still works.
Also, not using Windows here, so was pleasantly surprised to find the browser plugin is still functional.  Might disable it anyway for security reasons though.
Still, nice to actually have that choice!  (*glares at Adobe*)

If they didn't force the kill switch then tons of companies would keep running this unsafe software. We know, because even after 12 years of warnings, 8 of which have stated a definite end, there are still companies scrambling to make fixes now that its stopped working. 8 years ago they said that it wouldn't work in a couple years, to make changes. But so many didn't listen. 5 years ago they said they were serious and there would be no 'work around' make your stuff operate on something other than Flash. 2 years ago they publicly announced the end date would be Dec 30 2020. And somehow people are still surprised when Adobe finally seals up the security hole they opened and people rush to force it back open.

It works as long as the swf doesn't use AS3, that is.

You might find an article at zdnet.com interesting. A Chrome based browser was published with two reasons for existing; Flash support and the ability to access a single website. Search for an article published on January the 26th with the search words: "South African Government Flash". I don't know if the browser suits your purpose nor can I recommend Flash with a clean conscience, so I'm not posting a direct link to the article. If you dig it up and end up testing the browser, it would be fun to know if it can run Flash game content though.

Hmm, Flash...

1. Ew, proprietary.
2. Poor integration with the rest of the web.
3. Lots of buggy Flash sites from late '90s.

Why discontinue it? Why not translate the Flash engine into HTML5 and Canvas?
