I'm doing an essay on "Who or What is an American" and I feel like this is more of a survey, so comment your thoughts about who or what is an American, as it will help me understand from others
I know this is a very old journal, but I'd like to weigh in all the same. An American is anyone who lives in America. Doesn't matter what race they are, what ethnicity they are, what culture they represent. What matters is that they live in America and acculturate (I believe that is the correct term - different from the word "assimilate" in that to "assimilate" means to remove all of one's uniqueness and one's culture in favor of the dominant one, where "acculturate" refers to respecting the laws of the land while retaining one's native culture and beliefs). America is a land of immigrants. Even the so-called "Native" peoples immigrated from Asia via a land bridge. As such there is no "One Correct Culture For All Americans" that some people seem to think there should be.
I'm sorry this isn't more specific, but it's the basic gist of what I believe an American is. I hope this helps, if not in the essay, then perhaps in some other area of life.
