SCP Tale denied

The SCP has some very elitist individuals in their ranks it would seem, shooting down every submission set before them, seemingly as if it was their duty.

One tale, three SCPs, and one test log for another.  Every one of them denied.  Specifically by one individual.  I won't name them, I'm not that petty.  But I will say this; even when others thought something was good enough to give permission to and said as much, they would always turn up and burn it down, and those who were giving permission would disappear, refusing to  'step on their toes'.

I don't know what this persons problem is, but they certainly don't want me making new SCPs, and even though they are putting a damper on my desire to contribute, I'm not giving up.

This is the tale I most recently put up for consideration that had another say it was good until this person came in and pushed the yes sayer away so he could tear it apart: https://inkbunny.net/s/2201239.

As I put the finishing touches on any tale or SCP for the Foundation, I will put it in the SCP pool, and will update it with 'Accepted' or 'Rejected'.

What does "SCP" stand for again?
Thaddeus

It stands for Secure, Contain, Protect.

I've read two different meanings...

Special Containment Procedures
Secure Containment Procedures

Thad, to hell with them.  Screw the SCP and their idiot reviewers.

Tiny king of a tiny hill, Lord of a handful of ants and a ripe smelling dungbeetle.  Whoever the reviewer is, they are a pitiful example.

I say to hell with them.  Who cares if some moron who uses a magnifying glass and tweezers to urinate dislikes your work?  It says far more about them than you.

I would see if there is a public group for SCP, post your material there

Maybe this clown with a deficit of "iron below the belt" will be properly embarassed and step aside, change their soaked undies, and pop a blue pill before allowing an objective reviewer to stand in.

They are the public group, and part of the point of getting published on the SCP Wiki is that it's a popular fiction site.  I expected it to be difficult, and I want to meet the challenge.  This would be a step in the process of getting my name out there as a writer, and something I can point to in a portfolio of accomplishments.  It just so happens there is just this one asshole...

They're just as uptight as r/NuclearRevenge is on reddit. lol I gave up on both.

Don't give up, Puffy!  You get better by pushing yourself forward even in the face of criticism.  Granted, this one dude is above and beyond that, but just because I'm pointing a finger at this one person, doesn't mean I haven't got rejections by others.
I will keep going until I have successfully posted on that site, if for no other reason than to spite him.

It's also only this bad the first time around.  Once you get published the first time on the site, you don't have to jump through as many hoops, and I'll be able to more easily evade this douchebag.

Eh, it's okay. I don't have the stuff to submit anymore anyway. So not a big deal XD

Thank you though! :)

If you ever decide to try again, I will give you 100% of my time, effort, and resources to help you get through.  And when I do get published, I plan on getting on the 'Butterfly Squad' as they call it and making sure that those who have the talent get through.  You better believe that if I get on the squad, you won't get ignored because Mr. Elitist says you suck(Because you don't).

Thanks! :D

Sadly, like I said before, I no longer have that write up and I don't remember anything from it. Nor do I have the r/NuclearRevenge story either. Lost them and other stuff when a hard drive failed years back.

You can always create new SCPs!  I'll gladly spend some time in WCs Library with you to brainstorm more if you ever wish.

Sorry to hear that your story was denied.  I'm too insecure to even consider trying what you tried.
Thaddeus

Tried?  I haven't given up.  I am still trying.  And will continue until I succeed.
MviluUatusun
5 years, 9 months ago
Oh, I don't doubt you'll continue trying.  I was talking about myself being too afraid to even consider trying.
Thaddeus
5 years, 9 months ago
Aw, why are you so afraid?
MviluUatusun
5 years, 9 months ago
A rather low self-esteem.  I'm always afraid I won't be good enough.  That's why I post my stories online rather than see if they might possibly be acceptable elsewhere.  Oh, and I have a hard time writing a short story.  In fact, I've only written one short story where I told a whole story in less than 17,000 words.  It's called "Beyond Appearances" and it can be found on my homepage here.  (If you're interested in seeing how well I can write.)
Thaddeus

Sadly, I've only ever read small excerpts from your stories.  But the bits and pieces I've eclectically assembled it good.
MviluUatusun

Oh, don't say "sadly".  I don't read online stories as much as I used to.  I know most writers don't really like to read what others write for fear of accidentally taking an idea from them or writing like them.  In fact, one comic artist/writer even told me that she doesn't read stories others have written for those very reasons.
Thaddeus

I very strongly disagree with the statement of 'most writers don't really like to read what others write for fear of accidentally taking an idea from them or writing like them', and it saddens me that an author would cut themselves off from the largest source of inspiration available to them like that.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with seeing something you like in anothers writing, and thinking, 'Now how can I do this better, and make it my own?'
Though I do not recall off the top of my head, there is plenty of popular fiction, by professional writers, that is the transplantation of one stories plot into another setting, or telling the same story, but from a different POV.  The whole revisionist literature movement is centered around this exact thing.
If you wish, come online on Writers Crossing, and I'll see if I can't remember what lecture I have that talkss specifically these things, and why that opinion is objectively incorrect, and why your friend is hurting themselves and thier writing.

Well, maybe I should have said most.  I know I like to read stories from other authors.  My personal favorite author is Edgar Rice Burroughs and, if you read my "Marooned on Tashoo" story, you'll see a good example of someone inadvertently taking the writing style of another author and using it because that's what I accidentally did.  As I was writing the story, I would re-read it to edit it.  As I re-read it for the third time, I said, "This writing style looks familiar."  Then, I re-read the John Carter series of books and said, "Oh.  My.  God!  That's the way I wrote 'Marooned on Tashoo'."  I'm not complaining.  I just didn't realize how much ERB had influenced my writing style.
Thaddeus

There isn't anything wrong with that you know.  You are allowed to write in the style of other authors.  You aren't violating any code of conduct.  Some people challenge themselves to write in other peoples style, and the practice leads to a more flexible writing style that fits a greater span of writing needs.  And if you end up mimicking one more than another, that author would be more likely to be flattered you like their style so much as to emulate it.
MviluUatusun
5 years, 9 months ago
I'd like to think ERB would be flattered.  Now, the story I'm currently uploading definitely isn't his style.  I don't know if it's in the style of anybody else but I like the way it's turning out.

I am very strongly inspired by several writers here on inkbunny, but though I spare no thought for whether I sound like them or not, I don't think anyone would accuse me of sounding like Vendetta, WinterImage, or Squirrelfox, the three people whose writing inspired me to start writing furry literature.

It is also my hope that someone, or even many someones here on IB or elsewhere, read what I have created, and feel inspired as I was, to take it, make it their own, and maybe even do a better job than I did.

Interesting
Did the person give you any feedback on the work or on any way to improve it, or did they just reject it out right?
Thaddeus

They said the character was, and I qoute, "unbelievable, her development is boring, and fails to make me feel anything at all."
Then told me, again I quote, "You need to show us her inner thoughts.", and proceeded to direct me to one of his own SCPs, as an example of the 'correct' way to characterize.
I don't know about others, but I can't read the last paragraph without tearing up, and I wrote the damn thing, and the feelings of loss conveyed stem directly from a loss.

My thoughts are "F-em!" They are obviously a pack of useless bastards.  Dumber than dogshit and twice as useless.

SCP went down the toilet ages ago. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You aren't joking.  I've posted my ideas to the forums several times since, and each one just...  Vanishes, sometimes within a couple hours of posting.
It's obvious they don't want new people posting.  Period.  It's upsetting, but I will find a new place I think, to benefit with my writing.

I meant more that the average quality of the stories has been on a steady decline. Crap like this is the new standard. I wouldn't want to be associated with that.
Thaddeus
5 years, 7 months ago
I remember when I submitted my first idea, I was told that anything 'on par' with the first generation would never have gotten through today's 'standards'.  Rather depressing, since the eldest were among the best.

Normie invasion, happens to anything that hits critical mass in terms of popularity.

Just do your own thing. Write your own stories. It's what I do.

Yeah.  I hate the idea of giving up.  It's not the kind of person that I am.  But, some battles can't be won, and seeing authority abused to block people... it's rather disgusting.  I've been been debating putting up a journal about my giving up.  It isn't worth the stress to keep trying to get my ideas through to them when they obviously don't want them.  Perhaps, at some point, I'll flesh them out and post them here.  I'm sure there are plenty of people who would give credence to them here.

A rejection letter from a publisher is one thing, but a powertripping editor or mod working for free is another creature entirely. Don't feel bad. Consider it a red flag telling you how poisoned the well is. SCP used to be a great site full of creative, thought-provoking writing by talented authors. Now it's lowest common denominator trash written by and for people who don't understand what SCP is beyond "ooooOooOooOOO spoopy!"

Don't worry about it. Don't be upset. Make your own way and be done with the entire situation.
Thaddeus
