So I've been noticing an uptick in the number of so-called YCH auctions.
And I don't mean the ones where the artist sketches out a basic pose and scenario, then draws your character in place of the sketched one. No, those are fine. That's actually a YCH auction.
The so-called ones are ones where the artist draws the sketch of the basic pose and scenario, then...offers to use your character's colors on the character they already drew. They don't draw your character, they draw their character, then just give it a paint job. They might have simple enough to forgive restrictions like "can only change breast size slightly" which, given my character has small-ish breasts means I often get depicted being MUCH more endowed than I am. But hey, people like the bewbs, so lets use our imaginations for a bit on that one.
But then you get the ones where they say things like "must match proportions" or even worse, "must be the same species, basic shape, and proportions as example". I can understand if the restriction were just something like, not adding 100 pounds, or dropping the height more than a foot from the example. That might mess up the basic composition of the piece. But these ones aren't allowing any deviation.
But...then it's not MY character anymore. It's your character just colored up to be similar to mine. What am I actually paying for here? Why should I pay you, to draw your own character? I'm paying for you to draw my character. So dammit, draw MINE.
And yes, I get it. If I don't like it, I don't have to buy it. Which is why I don't.
Just, if it's not "Your Character Here", but is instead "My Character Colored To Be Similar To Your Character Here", just call it that...MCCTBSTYCH.
Thank you, this has been a ratty rant. I don't do this often, I promise.
