Coronavirus PSA

To all my friends on the internet out there.

This outbreak is a real threat. Please, for your loved ones’ sake and your own, do not dismiss its information around you. There are fake news and misleading info, but you have to take it all in and sieve it. Here are some things I highly recommend:

- This virus can lay dormant in a host for up to 14 days. During that time, the infected person can already transmit it to others. https://www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/q-a-coronaviruses
- It weaker when temperature is above 25 degree Celsius. Keep your surrounding ventilate and warm (it can still feed off from your cells when infected, though) https://www.scmp.com/news/china/science/article/3074131...
- But, with low temperature, it can survive for days on a surface. https://www.sciencealert.com/study-shows-just-how-long-...
- Your government WILL lie to you to keep you from panicking. I’m begging you to seek out info on other sources

Is it deadly? Yes. Can it be cured? Maybe. But to prevent is better than to cure. Here’s what you can do in the mean time:

- Practice hygiene. Wash your hand, clean your house, sanitize your surrounding. If you can’t wash your hand for some reasons, use hand sanitizer with 60% alcohol or more. https://www.propublica.org/article/coronavirus-hand-san...
- Wear a mask. It’s not to protect you but the people around you. Wearing a mask keeps your sneeze and other nasty body fluids from spreading around. You don’t know if you’re infected or not.
- Avoid crowded places. You can’t help going to the grocery store, but you’ll live without going to that rock concert or that comic con you’ve planned. You’ll never know if there’s an infected person there.
- Spread this! Don’t panic, but don’t be complacent either!
- Press your government to get off their asses and ACT! While doctors and scientists work on a cure, help them by hygiene discipline to prevent the virus’ spread.

You say that, and then you go and spread your own misinformation. Hmm. A lot of this is completely untrue, and as a whole it will only serve to make people panic, waste their time and potentially cause even more upset and stress.

True, but chances are you are not any kind of medical expert, so you can't make an informed decision about what is "true" and what is "fake". It's best to follow general advice from the CDC, the Ministry of Health, or whoever is your country's appropriate body.

This virus can lay dormant in a host for up to 14 days. During that time, the infected person can already transmit it to others.
True, but it is typically no more than five days, and many people show no symptoms at all. If you think you may be infected, the only way to be sure is to get yourself checked out by a professional.

It can’t survive temperature above 25 degree Celsius. 10 minutes exposure can kill it.
False. The human body is typically 37.5 degrees Celsius. If this was true, it would die almost immediately after transmission.

BUT, with low temperature, it can survive up to 12 HOURS on a surface.
False. It can be up to nine days, depending on what the surface is made from. Maybe. This isn't confirmed.

Your government WILL lie to you to keep you from panicking. I’m begging you to seek out info on other sources.
Like the internet, that reliable source of medical information, ranging from copper bracelets through to anti-vaxx lies?

Is it deadly? Yes
Almost anything can be deadly. In this case over 80% of the deceased were over 60 years old, and over 75% of the deceased had a pre-existing condition such as heart disease

Can it be cured? Maybe.
It's a virus. Viruses are notoriously difficult to "cure" because they aren't bacteria. They can readily mutate. It's why we still have the "common cold", which incidentally is also typically caused by a relative of COVID-19

But to prevent is better than to cure.
Very true

Hand sanitizer is your best friend. If you don’t have enough, dilute alcohol and put it in a spray bottle to use.
No, no NO. Lies. Most hand sanitizer is designed to kill BACTERIA, not VIRUSES. Near-pure alcohol can kill viruses, but most store bought sanitizer simply isn't strong enough. As for diluting alcohol, that's just wasting perfectly good alcohol as you're render it completely useless. If you must use a hand swab, use isopropyl alcohol that's at least 99% pure. Anything else almost certainly won't work.

Vitamin C boost your immune system. Take it! Also, workout and exercise help too.
Vitamin C supplements only boost the health of the pharmaceutical companies. Most people don't need it. It may be mildly beneficial if you're ALREADY under the weather, but it's not a cure-all. Exercise is always a good thing, but your immune system can be lowered if you stress your body too much, so...eh...

Keep your throat moist. Don’t drink a lot of water at once then hoard the toilet. Just drink regularly. The virus can enter your lungs if your throat is dry, then it’s game over.
What? I think this came from the same people who are telling everybody to drink bleach to cure it. What on earth are you talking about?

Wear a mask. You don’t know if you or others around you are infected.
True, but masks are largely ineffective against viruses as the holes in the material are thousands of times larger than a virus. Face masks are designed to stop the WEARER from spreading coughs and sneezes, NOT to prevent the wearer from catching other things. Why do you think during surgery they put them on the doctors, NOT the patient?

Avoid crowded places. You can’t help going to the grocery store, but you’ll live without going to that rock concert or that comic con you’ve planned
This is actually fairly sensible. Crowded places are a good way to spread infections.

Spread this! Don’t panic, but don’t be complacent either!
No, no. Please don't!

First of all, thank you so much for reaching out. I was afraid what I said would fall on deaf ear (given the platform), but now that I double-checked and did my research, I must thank you again for correcting me.

No, I’m a pilot. my expertise lies elsewhere. what I can say is that I looked up a lot of info about this virus (from reliable sources this time) to better protect myself and my family. I also visit CDC website (the equivalent of the Ministry of Health in my country) and see that they have fairly sufficient info about the virus, but not detailed enough compared to other sources, such as WHO’s.

What I’m talking about is the virus’s incubation period, in which the infected shows no symptom, yet can already spread the virus to other. It’s easy to tell when a person is sick if they cough or sneeze so you can avoid them, but if said person shows no symptom at all, how can you tell if they’re infected or not? Some countries (like mine) issue a mandatory 14-days quarantine for people who comes back from infected areas or has close contact with the infected for a reason.
Info on its incubation period here: https://www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/q-a-coronaviruses

Correction: The virus is stronger at lower temperature, peaked at around 8-9 degree Celsius. It’s weaker when it’s 25 degree or above, but that doesn’t mean it can’t infect. It feeds off of your cells once infected, unlike air-bone condition where it has no nourishment, that’s why it can survive and reproduce inside your body.

If you can read Vietnamese, here’s another one: https://phanopharmacy.com/health/phong-kin-dieu-hoa-duo...

No, this isn’t confirmed. It depends on various elements such as surface type, temperature, humidity... but that doesn’t mean you can leave whatever contaminated object lying around without disinfecting it, do you? The thing can survive for DAYS!

What’s your best bet: the internet, which also have reliable medical resources such as WHO, CDC... or some random tips you hear from people around you? If they are virus expert, researcher or professional, then by all means. Oh, and don’t forget the politicians, the ones holding the power and running the country, but have little to no medical knowledge whatsoever.

I’ll bet my whole career that you wouldn’t want this nasty virus to infect your loved ones, especially the elders. Like you said, they already have health conditions, the virus only quickens their passing. BUT, the deadly part is the unknowing. Someone may be infected without knowing, and when they come into contact with an elderly... well, you can figure out the rest.

Correction: Proper hand wash with soap is always recommended, but when you don’t have access to water or disinfectant soap, this is the next best thing. True that hand sanitizer with alcohol level less than 60% is not effective, though, and I agree on using isopropyl alcohol.
Hand sanitizer: https://www.propublica.org/article/coronavirus-hand-san...

And, your point? You’re saying exactly what I said. The mask is to protect others, not you. You don’t know if you’re infected or not, so don’t spray your cough and sneeze everywhere. The mask can cover your nose and mouth for you better than your hand or the crook of your arm. You should encourage others to do so, especially in culture where wearing mask is foreign (Japan has been very cool with wearing mask in public for a long time).

Yes, yes I will continue to do so, but with accurate, confirmed information this time. People need to take this seriously, unlike some European countries where the infected number keeps skyrocketing, and in America with politicians spewing nonsense contradicting medical experts.
