Patreon Problems

by
Not sure who, or why, but someone's been harassing me for a few months. Especially so after I started my patreon. Latest move was to report my Patreon page.

Today, I had to limit my patreon activity, remove all stories that contained the "rape" keyword. Why? Because patreon doesn't actually have any community guidelines they instead have some fancy prose that means nothing.

From the guidelines:

...

However, we have zero tolerance when it comes to the glorification of sexual violence which includes bestiality, rape, and child exploitation (i.e., sexualized depiction of minors). This is true for illustrated, animated, or any other type of creations. Patreon reserves the right to review and remove accounts that may violate this guideline.

We also do not allow other fringe sexual fetish creations, such as incest, necrophilia, or fetish creations that is hard to distinguish from non-consensual sex.

We understand that some topics on this list such as incest or rape are a little bit more complicated because these situations are, unfortunately, part of real life. As a result, when reviewing these types of creations, the Trust and Safety team will take into consideration context including personal, historical or educational narrative. For example, survivor stories or fiction such as Game of Thrones or Lolita are allowed on Patreon.

...

As you can see, pretty cut and dried, right? And yes, some of my content would run foul of this, and I acknowledge this. I suspect my Valentines Day story certainly did. However, most of my writing does not condone, or "glorify" rape. It's usually the horrific reprocussions that I fixate on.

The reply I got from the moderator contained this nugget:

...

To answer your questions, at Patreon we define the glorification of sexual violence, not as an exhortation of it, but as something that is featured prominently in the content to the point of being one of its main focuses.

...

They literally redefine the word "glorify" to fit their discomfort with my writing. I didn't break their rules, they moved the bar on me. That definition does not exist within their guidelines, this is wholly from the moderator himself I suspect, or that moderator's superior. I replied with a long email explaining how they need to then write clearly what their guidelines actually mean, or end up with a meaningless waste of words.

Mean what you say, and say what you mean.

I'll come up with a new solution soon here, not sure what it will be, but I won't be kept down by harassment, or by petty moderators who can't stomach the real world.

<Insert rant about "snowflakes" and "mah feelins" and the like being the root cause of the overly-strict rules keeping them from flourishing as functional human beings and likewise restricting others because emotion is more important than logic and reason.>

Maybe I'm just old (at 34, so maybe?) but it used to be that you could actually read and understand rules and that those rules meant something other than "I don't like this." I also remember when you could just, y'know, write or draw or sculpt any goddamn thing, call it art, and be protected from persecution. Patreon's hosted in the US, so... that's like First Amendment shit, folks. Even hate speech is protected, like it or not.

As my grandfather would say while shaking his head in disgust: "some people's children."

Edit: I might be wrong on where Patreon's hosted, but I really don't give a ferret fart. The fact of the matter is that they're being vague and have been acting more on impulse and a set of personal moral guidelines that they're trying to make everyone adhere to while a chosen few have no such restrictions. It's Far-Left enforced by Alt-Right and that's just plain dumb, no matter how one looks at it.

I don't have a problem with "strict rules" I have a problem with rules that aren't rules.
I obeyed the rules, and then they changed them. That's bullshit.

If their rules were written properly, there would be no need to do more than request a certain item be taken down and point to the rule that was broken, but they can't do that. Instead, they left things open-ended enough to allow the illusion of discretion while also allowing them to bring the hammer down hard if they're disturbed due to a reported/perceived violation. It's like executing a man for ignoring the "Keep off the Grass" sign in a public park. If it said "Under Penalty of Death" or "Except on Thursday," the reaction would make more sense. Not much, but a little.

It's a way to avoid potential future conflict by leaving the option to permanently end an existing conflict. It's the way every parent losing an argument to their child by having their words turned against them just yells "because I said so" and then the punishment of no dessert is binding, regardless of fairness. Going nuclear over a minor slight or inconvenience is just silly, and surprisingly common (especially if you work retail).

This is typically done just to cover one's ass and save face but, since moderation is left to a bunch of people who are free to interpret the rules to fit their own views, there is nothing uniform in either the handling of violations or the punishment for said transgressions. "No girls allowed, except Suzie, because she's Mike's girlfriend, and Sarah because my mom made me let her in. Timmy isn't in the Club anymore since he walked on the grass. Because I said so!"

I was going to edit a giant mess of a post down to a few, easily-understood, concise thoughts. However...

<Insert sarcasm> I decided that, in the interest of avoiding further conversation, I'm just going to blurt out a bunch of words, hope it makes sense to you, and then punish you severely if you deviate from the vision I had in mind when I typed these words, according to my whims at the time of the violation. Without any further warning, of course. <End sarcasm>

All griping aside, I hope you get everything sorted out according to whatever moderator's view of the vague rules needs enforcing. I can't find a fault in your argument, but I might be judged as being biased, so... who gives a crap what I think, right? ;)

Best of luck!

Edit: Afterthought - "Let the punishment fit the crime" is still a thing, but Patreon's more of a "summary execution" organization.

I thankfully wasn't "punished" in anything more than having to take down the stories that violate their imaginary guidelines that don't exist.
The moderator replied again this morning,  trying to explain their interpretation... which doesn't make a difference in the fact that IT IS AN INTERPRETATION THAT DOES NOT MATCH THE GUIDELINES. I told them as much in a short reply. And I told them, the issue isn't that the stories need to be taken down, I respect that, it's the fact that the rules lied to me. I thought the site was one thing, in which I could do business, and now the goal post has been moved by a moderator.
