It's dead, Jim

My GFX card, that is. Yesterday it worked just fine and this morning when I started my computer I got to stare at empty screens. Integrated gfx thing got one screen to work but that's pretty much all it can do. The gfx card has disappeared from device manager so I don't think there's much to be done even if the lights and fans seem to still work. Gotta see if nudging it a bit would do something but I don't think so.

Anyway, may it rest in peace. It survived heavy use for ~6 years if I remember correctly.

Of course this happened just as I got over some RL stuff & artblock that kept me from doing stuff (even more than usual) Oh well.

I guess I can still draw and do some light 3d stuff.

Haven't really been following what's going on with GFX cards lately so if you can suggest decent replacement it would be helpful. As long as it's more powerful than my dearly departed Titan Black and has more than 6GB of memory it should be good. Dunno when I have the money to buy one though.

Anyway, I'll try to continue working on stuff despite this setback.

Ah damm. Always happens when you re least prepared for it. Mine died like 6 months ago. Just recently was able to buy a new one.

If youre lookin for a new GPU at a highend lvl, Id say the only real choice currently are the nvidia rtx 20xx series. AMDs gpu are still some time away, like last quarter 2019 I think. Nvidia 10xx series is sold out at high end, non available anymore.
The AMD vega 7 is probably good for creators (fuckton of fast memory) But they didnt produce many of em so mebeh already sold out?

So I guess it goes like this:

All of the 20xx series are better than the titan black, by a pretty huge margin even. 2060 is the cheapest but a pretty good card to be honest, best price to performance ratio. It however only comes with 6gb. 2070 is slighly faster than 2060, its only real advantage compared to 2060 is that it has 8gb memory. I guess for a creator it is the better choice, for midrange gamers Id advice 2060.

Highend lvl 2080 is faster n better than 2070 but also only has 8gigs of memory.

Vega 7 of AMD is at about 2080 rtx lvl of speed, however it has 16 gigs of faster memory. So thats pretty good for creators. As I said tho, they created very little of em because they basically produced em at a loss to not loose too much marketshare.

2080ti is insanely expensive (prices have settled down by now, still insane pricing tho) its freakin fast tho and has 11gigs of memory.

So I guess thats your choice for good gpus right now. The market is pretty one sided right now :/

Lookin at the market in mid europe, vega 7 are still very available, at the same price of 2080. Its very slightly worse than 2080 in gaming but has twice its memory which should be DOOOOOOOPE for rendering I think? I heard it had some issues with drivers early on, so IDK about that. Also it has no custom cooler options, but its normal cooler is decent enough I think. Id honestly say grab a vega 7 if you want to render a lot. 16 gigs of very fast memory is as good as it can get at 700 euro.
if thats too expensive, 2060 (~350 euro) or 2070(~500Euro) dependin on your budget.

Thanks for recommendations. I've had bad experiences with radeon cards before so I'm a bit hesitant to switch to those and I think Blender still renders faster on CUDA. Haven't recently checked if that's the case still though.

I think I'll switch to Blender 2.8 soon-ish and then GPU memory isn't that big deal since it can use ram as needed. (iirc) Obviously it's slower but dunno if it's that big deal. Main thing is that it keeps rendering instead of crashing. :)

I'll look into 2070 cards. Blender might get support for the raytracing thingy so it would be nice to have it even though for gaming it's completely useless. 2080ti would be optimal but I'm not in good enough financial situation unfortunately :D Hopefully I can get it soon-ish anyway. It's horrible to have only one screen and can't even play anything.

Oh and it seems that I have to get some adapters as well since my ancient screens still use DVI connectors. -_- Other one might have hdmi as well but the Old One surely doesn't. Duh.

Dayum man get new screens :P

2070 is a good middle ground for sure. Mebeh its worth reading a bit more into vega 7. Im unsure how usefull the memory is for blender, but its unlikely that we will see a card with this amount of highspeed memory for this price in quite a while. It did have driver issues early on. I dont really know tbh. If blender is better on cuda and the memory is not needed, then ye, 2070 will be more consistent. Tho Id assume, not knowin anything about blender tho, that ongpu memory will always be better than RAM due to RAMs speed limitation compared to GPU memory. Mebeh just search a tad on youtube for like card comparisons for creators.

2080ti is pretty good, I wasted too much money on it :P tho currently its bottlenecked by my cpu, need to upgrade soonish. Prob next month :)

EDIT seems like I clicked the wrong button, RIP reply

Heh I've been "getting" new screens for over a year now but I never have the money D: Always something more important comes up. -> Screens still work so they're fine. :P

If I remember it right and blender can use ram with gpu memory it's probably ok since getting stuff in and out of ram is still much faster than the rest of rendering. :)

At least rest of my computer is still good enough since my motherboard died last year and I updated the processor and memory back then. (sure, it's still 4+"4" core cpu but that was the best I could get since that breakdown was timed rather badly. As usual.) But yeah gotta check out if there are some good comparisons somewhere.

damn that sucks dude also the best "budget" I use the term lightly is the gtx 1660 they have a cheaper 1650 but I was basically told in the review I watched it was shit and to just spend a bit more though the 2060 or 2080 are the pricier one but was told they are the best right now

I'm personally probably going to get the gtx 1660
