Selaxes and I have been talking about this for awhile now and we’ve made the decision: we intend to rewrite Birthright. This will be a ground-up overhaul of the story, not only to make it more consistent and fix grammar, syntax, and other errors, but to purge any copyrighted or trademarked details so that it can be legally published as its own original story.
This is going to take a hell of a lot of work and a lot of time. The core story will remain unchanged, but many details will have to change; for example, it can no longer be set in Zootopia, and the main character can no longer be Judy Hopps. We believe that once it’s finished it’ll be different enough from the original (first draft) we’ve already published on Ao3 that long-time readers will likely be able to enjoy a re-read and new readers will be able to enjoy the polished non-fandom version without having to slog through our amateur writing mistakes.
We’re still discussing a fanfic version sequel, but whether we actually do so or not is currently not one hundred percent decided. If we do write a sequel, I imagine we’ll end up converting that as well…though the whole subject still requires discussion.
We haven’t made any decisions yet about how we want it to be published, but it will be in eBook format of some stripe.
There’s a lot of work to do and we both have jobs we need to work to pay the bills, so don’t expect any further news for some time. There’s just too much to do to expect this to be done in a month.
