Does anyone know of any game where the players got promoted to a boss?

Im talking about some pvp mmo where a player got so powerful that they became a challenge for other players.

I've watched How not to summon a Demon Lord and am wondering if the beginning has any real world equivalent.

Age of Wulin/Age of Wushu.

A player can become so skilled, well equipped, and a challenge to many players that they can effectively become the leader of their respective faction based on progression. AoW is a Chinese open world PvP-style MMO which put more emphasis on daily lifestyles than story. Its main setting is Ming Dynasty China.

You start off at the very very bottom with many other players and at one point you have to join a faction where you will obtain access to specific battle skills based on that faction. It depend on which faction you join that determine your alignment. (Example, Royal Guard is an evil faction due to political corruption, you'll receive less world penalties since you're effectively the "Law" meanwhile the Shaolin Monks is a good faction where you will receive the most penalties based on your actions on account Shaolin Monks are more pacifistic.)

Based on your progression (there is no level up system, it all depends on how you progress in regard to your lifestyle), you will be more than a match for other players, and based on your pvp records you'll eventually rise to the top to become a faction leader (until another player dethrone you). So basically AoW is an MMO where you can become the big boss c:

I've not seen the exact thing you are asking about, BUT there have been a bunch of WoW boss fights where the boss can brainwash one of your teammates and transform them into a miniboss.

If you are good at racing games, Forza Horizon 3 is centered on you being the Boss of the Festival. You recruit other Drivatars, which are advanced AI based on the driving habits of users they belong to. You also are in charge of where and which Festival Sites to expand. Entire focus is being the boss essentially and the nature of the last two Horizon entries are multiplayer focused and have some MMO trapping adapted to the racing genre.

Some bosses in WoW can mind control a player and make them a threat for their team.

On the other end of the spectrum I think 'Evolve (Stage 2)' comes closest, although it's not technically a MMO.
You control a monster which four other players hunt in a match, you have to eat wildlife to grow stronger and evolve to stronger forms, all the while avoiding the hunter players who have abilities to track you. If they can't kill you before you grow to monstrous proportions and gain incredible powers, the roles are reversed and now you hunt them and wipe the floor with them.
There are/were different types of monster to unlock.
