FUCK YOU, AIM

Okay so I'm just dragging my still-ill ass out of bed and Wolfie's all "hey, you're visible on AIM."

I don't remember leaving it running. The damn thing must have auto-updated, or just hiccuped, or SOMETHING, because it went and put me as visible. So I go to check and there's a fuckton of messages sitting there, several of the following basic pattern:

    1: hi! omg ltns! :D :D :D
    2: Hey, you do remember me right, it's _____. :C
    3: okay, well fuck you too then, I guess.

To the 68 people who messaged me with no response this morning; no, I don't hate you, I WAS ASLEEP. ;_;

I never assume people are ignoring me. I always give the benefit of the doubt and assume they're busy or away, or (if it's late), that they fell asleep.

I wish more people would try harder to find benign explanations for the behavior of others when those others don't really have a history to justify jumping to more intentional explanations. :/

I think the problem is that people on the Internet tend to be cynical and jaded. As well as the possibility they just might be used to being ignored. :C

Don't forget, the internet has made a number of people assume that if you're online you're not only at the keyboard, but will respond immediately - five seconds is just too damn long *rolls eyes*

It's made people impatient too. People apparently wait an average of 7 seconds while loading a page before they close it and either try again, or just stop completely.

Wow, that's just... scary to hear.  I open up the tab, and give it time... But I tend to multi-task, so it makes any supposed "waiting" easier to deal with (usually I don't mind waits, since I grew up around 2800 baud modems, so... Yeah)

Ahh, dial-up, the good ol days....  When people learned to lead their targets in first person shooters, because a ping of 200ms was AMAZING.  Gawd, I miss TEN and M-Player (and GameStorm, especially the Godzilla Online Beta, and being the first to figure out how to switch to the breath weapon *evil grin*)

Nowadays a ping of 200ms gets you punted off the server! o_O

I'm referring to the Godzilla Online of like, uhm... Gawd, easily twice as long as that, since GameStorm shut their doors in like 2000.  Yup, according to wikipedia GameStorm was shut down in 2001...  And Godzilla Online's beta test was late 90s, possibly 97-98.

If something as benign as that "ruins" a friendship, then I'm not going to be losing a moment's sleep over that kind of friendship being off the plate of crap I feel concerned about. :/

This is >mostly< just random people messaging 'teh arteest' and 'being ignored by the popufur who's obviously too good to respond to them.' The few cases where it's someone I've actually talked to before, the upset is moderately understandable since so many people I do consider friends just haven't heard from me in forever. But I don't think any of them will react other than "oh, okay. my bad" when they get the simple and honest explanation.

Friendships hit rough patches, and sometimes its work to maintain or repair one, but there's far too many awesome people out there to worry too much about people who would let a friendship be "ruined" because of something as silly as this.

<nodnods>  As sad as it is, I agree entirely.  The biggest issue I usually have with MSN is with dropped IMs, rather than improper status display.  That usually tends to cause massive misunderstandings rather than people feeling "ignored," and in that case, the nature of the person on the other end isn't to blame.

In your case, though--as well as any other well-known people--I think folks tend to forget that there's a real, normal, everyday person on the other end that has to deal with real, normal, everyday things just like everybody else.  Honestly, I don't know how you guys tolerate it, but I gotta give props to you for doing so.  <giggles>  Goodness knows I'm hardly as patient.  XD

Also why I don't use AIM, but you're right, people need to chill because I know I've sometimes haven't set myself as away when I've gone to do something else. If I don't get a response from people I'm trying to talk to I always say "awww they're afk." I used to get mad because they should mark themselves away but I got over that when I got my new pet peeve of people who get up in the middle on conversations without saying brb or hold on....

People who assume that someone who's not responding on an instant messenger is deliberately ignoring them out of spite rather than, say, away from the keyboard, asleep, and/or busy... has severe insecurity issues themselves and you should not feel bad for "making" them feel bad.

Sounds like people read a lot into you not responding.

Me, I just never change my IM status ("busy"), and I'm online 24/7. People learn pretty fast that my failure to respond could mean anything, and not to be offended.

The ones that really bug me are the ones who IM "can I ask a question?"... and then NOTHING.

If I'm there, I have to choose between asking what the question is, in case it's important; or getting work done. Guess which wins.
If I'm NOT there, then by the time I get back, I reply asking what the question is... and no response, because now *they* are afk. Stupid IM-tag games follow.

People who leave a good intelligible question are golden, and get helped as much as I can, as soon as I can.

I know yahoo has this "always online so you don't miss a message" thing. Maby aim has it now too. Even if you log out it keeps you as online unless you tell it to log you out from everywhere.

Sorry, I was part of that crowd.  I thought it was really odd to see you set to available, but I thought I may as well check and see if you were online.  It became pretty obvious pretty fast though, that either you weren't there, or were busy doing something else.  I don't see why that would upset anyone...

Hopefully the 2's and 3's from your exmaple above show you who sucks and who doesn't. ;D I did 1, but 2 and 3 are pretty immature and inconsiderate - I figured if you weren't responding to "Hey man, LTNS!" then you were either busy or AFK - either way no biggie. Glad you're doing okay, get better soon!

Ever had people IM you while your offline and asleep and they get mad when you don't reply. It's like wow I'm not awake at 3 in the morning alright and you tell them this but they keep doing it like idiots.
