So this is a question that popped up in a discord server, and it seems like a generally good question.
The subject of Doug Winger came up. For those not in the know, DOug Winger was a rather popular furry artist that did a lot of herm/futa furry art, mostly hyper, with a good deal of cheesy comedy mixed in.
And notice I said was? Well, that’s because, unfortunately, Doug succumbed to COPD about three years ago. Doug, though I never met or chatted with him, was kind of formative in the deviant I am today, it was the first herm and hyper stuff I saw, and I liked the cheesy jokes and stupid puns and everything.
A lot of Doug’s stuff was art of popular characters (You will see a lot of Minerva Mink, for those old enough to remember her) but he also had a fair number of characters folks liked like Pandora the naughty hyper herm dog.
Anyways, the question that came up is this.
Is it disrespectful to still get fan art of someone’s characters after they have passed? Is it wrong to pay tribute like that?
I’m personally of the mind that it’s a good thing as long as you don’t do something with their characters that they didn’t do, treat the characters with the respect their creator did.
but I’m interested in seeing what folks think about this. So, if you are an artist, commissioner or otherwise someone who owns an OC who is, for whatever reason, following me…What do you think?
Well, yeah of course it depends on what you do with the character. As long as you're respectful it's surely a tribute and celebration of the impact they had on the community and fandom.
Of course, considering how he did tributes of official characters, anyone arguing against also using his characters is kind of hypocritical? Sauce for goose and gander and all that.

I dont see it any different than getting fan art of a character from a tv show that's canceled like biker mice from mars.So thumbs up dude. You're breathing relevance into a topic you feel passionately about and as long as it's constructive should be fine.

seeing as he got porn made all the time as long as its not hurting or dissing the character I dont see why it would be bad.Its better then having his creations forgotten.

You should try contacting the account if you can, to see if anyone is managing it; and try and get permission; though it has been a while. If no one responds, then I'd think you'd probably be free.
Winger was formative over here as well.
I say go for it. You should try contacting the account if you can, to see if anyone is managing it;
I see it as long as its in good faith and you give credit to the original creator, it's absolutely fine. Heck if someone did anything with my OC I'd be utterly fine with it as long as they say the character belongs to me. I'd be flattered that anyone put in the effort at all honestly. I'd totally be up to see what you'd do with Doug's character.

To me, creative freedom should be as close to absolute as possible without invoking active attempts to harm others. If you can't even ask somebody if you can use their characters, then I think the statute of decorum on it is done.

While I never liked his art, I hear he was a pretty respectable guy, and honestly I empathize with his choices a lot. According to the original posts I read by a close acquaintance of his, he repeatedly refused treatment because it was on the pay of friends and family and he couldn't accept that for something he felt he did to himself. I know I'd struggle to not make the same call in his position.
That said, honestly I don't know for sure. I'd think it's a bit distasteful for erotic fan works postmortem, unless he had while still alive explicitly made a point that he appreciated and enjoyed them, then it could be honoring his wishes and keeping the spirit od what he loved alive? But clean works I wouldn't think are bad.
