TLDR; What's better? Patreon? Kofi? Something else?
I have a general question for any readers with experience. I've been considering setting up a Patreon/Kofi/Whatever type thing, as I mentioned in the last journal. I have a specific goal for doing this, and it isn't to make me money. Not to keep, anyway. It's to fund the illustrations that I prefer to send out along with my stories... And not just to fund the illustrations, but more importantly, the artists who make them! Being a freelance artist is hard, and it's harder if you're doing niche work, and yet we have some great artists in the TLK/toon space giving us their time and effort. I'd like to do what I can to see that be supported.
On average, I think each of my stories has taken about $150-200 to have illustrated, and generally about 40-60 work hours of effort on my part between writing and conceptualizing/finishing the illustrations and then posting everything. It's a lot of work, and it isn't cheap! As I approach more complicated ideas and scenes, it's just going to get moreso.
And it's worth it! But anything anyone can do to help keep this going... well, that's very much appreciated too! :)
So the whole question of this is: what do you think is the best platform to enable this sort of thing? Do you have experience with the ups and downs of any of them? Is there a platform out there I'm not aware of to consider?
I'm not expecting much of anything out of this, and if you'd rather donate directly to these artists, that's just as well from my perspective. But every single dollar towards allowing me to keep producing these illustrated stories would be SO great.
Thanks all for reading!
