Development takes time. It doesn't come magically. And of course a long-running comic will have more followers.

Consistancy is super important; you gotta grow an audience through updates so they come to anticipate and check your comic. Either that, or you make some characters people are into and draw them consistantly / with people. This requires strong chara design tho and is often more lucky than anything.
