I'm an artist who draws basically all the time. I sometimes construct my own 3D models and animations and such and I have to say that I do not support this rule change. This kind of thing irks me a bit because this is basically banning what is essentially a form of 3D rendering, it uses 3D models and it's done in an animation program that renders and creates animations. Source Film Maker is an animation program it's like 3Dsmax or Maya without the modeling component (though I don't use SFM, I use 3Dsmax so I don't know the full extent.)
I may not know all of it but from what I've herd so far is that SFM is apparently not going to be allowed which I've noticed has shaken the bushes of some notable users of the SFM format. I think this is pretty messed up cause so long as the sfm users giving credit for the models and stuff they themselves didn't have any work on and so fourth, it should be ok. I don't think these users are posing any threat at all to those who work on their own stuff from scratch.
I want to say that this reason is absolutely ridiculous. I may not know the people who wanted to have this rule in place but if you're one of the people who did this I have to say that you do not have confidence in your own artisitc talents. The solution to that is for you to keep working on your own stuff, and as shallow as this might sound, offer up to draw requests once and awhile. Art is subjective and its value of any particular component is placed on the eye of those who view it. If you feel it devalues your artwork then that means you yourself don't find any value in your art at all. At the end of the day only you can put value in your own work that you produce sense you're the one producing it. It's not the fualt of other artists that you haven't been able to get your foot into the door.
The simplest thing to do here is to keep practicing your own art, look up tutorials, learn about the basics of art like color, line, etc, heck even ask other artists whom you admire for tips. There's nearly limitless info out there to find take advantage of that.
Secondly if you have that competitive of a mindset your not just competing with SFM people. You're also competing with other artists who're also quite talented in their own drawings. Granted the competition mindset is toxic. It's not fair to target sfm artists because you yourself haven't gotten somewhere yet.
As for the admins and people in charge of IB let me say this: I can't understand why you'd make this change there may be more to it then that but I feel you guys should be more lenient on this sort of thing as well. I mean FA to my understanding hasn't done something like this yet. I always figured you guys were way better than this. You guys shouldn't let jealousy of other artists change a rule that ends up alienating others.
Please reconsider this change. Don't screw up the user base like this and let people get out of hand. Some artists came here because they felt they were being pushed away by the people on FA. So you're basically doing the same thing and pushing people who once part of this community out.
TL;DR:
Those who support this rule change seem to have no value in their own artistic talent. Instead if trying to get a rule that alienates those whom they perceive as a threat they should instead focus on finding value on their own work if not they should get help from other artists to improve it enough to where it looks good in their own eyes.
This rule won't make things better for who want to band SFM work because they'll still have to deal with other talented artists that also draw. This rule will do nothing but push people away just like with what happened on FA.
IB was just starting to feel like home to me, It's pretty sad to see a site of this quality go into the crapper. So I hope this issue is resolved in a better way that doesn't split or alienate users of different format.
