Fuck You, Gout.

If you've never experienced gout in your life, I want you to sit down and clear your mind. We're going on a journey.

Gout is caused by the body not processing uric acid well enough to be expelled in the urine, so it's collected in the joints of the feet and the knees as little crystals. Most commonly in the right big toe (which is where mine is now.)

The pain is always a ten. Even with heavy pain killers it never goes below a nine.

The sensation is like someone inflating a balloon inside the base of your toe. Only the balloon is covered in broken glass.

Also; the balloon is on fire.

It's literally such a horrible and intense pain the weight of a bed sheet is enough to irritate the area.

I'm not sure what triggered mine this time, I've been eating so clean for the last six months. Probably a mix of stress and cheap luncheon meats.

Anyways, once the pain goes away it's back to work!

~Love and Peace
- Mako

PS: I swear, man. It's like once I get back on track something just comes along and fucking derails me and shits right in my mouth.

I need someone to teach me programming so I can hurry up and get steam rich.

Maraschino cherries.  It sounds stupid, but they work for a lot of people
MakoRuu

I've taken dark cherries before, and cherry juice. But never maraschino. I'd imagine all that syrup would be counter intuitive.
esanhusky
It's not syrup, it's a kind of "marinade" for lack if a better word.  The juice is actually mildly caustic, and needs to be placarded as such when transported.  The theory is that it neutralizes some of the uric acid that causes gout
MakoRuu

Huh. I'll have to look in to it.

I've always hated maraschino cherries, though. lol

Shite. I’m sorry to hear that. I hope it gets better soon. Is there treatment?
MakoRuu

There are experimental treatments, but nothing my local hospital has, or my health insurance covers.

Right now I'm just fasting on a diet of apple cider vinegar and naproxen sodium. lol

Vegetarian-keto diet also helps with gout, in some cases. I still swear by Soylent and DIY-lent, though.

Also; tofu triggers my gout for some reason. Everyone's body is different.

Not vegan, just vegetarian. Tofu isn't necessary either way, though. And is pretty gross.

I feel your pain there, changing my diet was the hardest part of dealing with gout
MakoRuu
I changed my diet many years ago, and I don't drink beer or other alcohols. But sometimes you can't always afford fresh vegetables and nice cuts of meat, so you buy the cheap stuff... Mechanically separated meats are the worst possible thing for gout. @__@
AmaraMcLeod
oh yeah, trust me, that was the hardest part, because I love broccoli, asparagus, tomatoes, genoa salami, pepperoni, roast beef and beef in general and many types of fish

cutting beef and pork to chicken and turkey was not hard to do, but that was about the only easy part

also had to cut soda out almost entirely (so now if its soda it is Sprite/ 7Up/Squirt) as caramel coloring is bad for gout I found out
MakoRuu
I've never been a huge soda drinker, myself.

But, I normally have a pretty clean diet, and I supplement it with a lot of celery, carrots, apples. Leafy greens other than spinach (cause of the iron and purines.)

Mushrooms are also good for gout in spite of being high in purines because of their high vitamin D count.

Normally I take apple cider vinegar every other day or so, and that helps, but it's expensive and I haven't been able to buy it a lot lately.

I have gout, and when I feel like I'm about to have an attack, I have a go-to set of suppliments that I feel like help me.... you probably have read these somewhere, and maybe they could help you, maybe not, but here's what I take...
Tart-Cherry Extract (pill form...found it at Walmart)
Ginger Root
Turmeric
Cinnamon
It doesn't usually -stop- the attack, but I feel like it helps them not be quite so bad most of the time.

I found a study once upon a time that said Tart Cherry was found to reduce Uric Acid levels in the blood by a decent percent.... you may have tried that and all of those supplements I mentioned and they may not have worked, I dunno, I assume everyone is different, but like I said, feels like they help me a little bit...

As for what may have caused your sudden flareup...cheap lunch meats probably don't help, but also if you haven't been staying hydrated well I notice that I have more trouble when I haven't been drinking enough water... just a thought.

Gout fricking sucks, dude....I hope the attack passes soon....>.<   (( Also, sorry for all the back-door doctoring...I just know how bad it sucks when I have flare-ups, so I immediately wanna offer what knowledge I have to anyone suffering similarly ^^;;; Take care! ))

Yeah, I take apple cider vinegar and drink tons of tang. Vitamin C is good for getting rid of uric acid in the blood, too.

I have a huge list of foods that I can and can't have that help with gout. Everyone is different, some people like soy, but tofu triggers my gout.

Celery is also good, celery extract and juice is a miracle for gout.
Alexthesheppy

I'll have to give that a try too at some point then for sure.... anything to stop that crap from happening is good....yeesh... >.<   Hope you're feelin' a bit better by this point.

Never had gout, but I have a scar horizontally across my left knee. It jiggles a bit, when I run and locks up randomly.

P.S.   Find a portal to travel back into time and put all your stocks into google, so you can be filthy rich.

They tried to give it to me once way back a few years ago, but I wouldn't take it because of all the side effects. Made me feel funny, I don't know.

Also; my insurance doesn't cover it.

Makes you feel funny?  Whut...that's weird...I don't feel any different.  But yeah it's helped a lot already even at the lowest dose.  My uric acid level has historically hovered between 9-11 mg/DL and high end is...7?  Something like that.  Left big toe has been the only problem area thank god.  I have had mild attacks for a few weeks after eating sushi and shrimp stuff (cuz high purines).  Since meds, no problem.  My symptoms are weird, on any given day I can walk just fine and articulate the joint fine, but if I put pressure on it like massaging it, then and only then it hurts a bit.
MakoRuu
See, that's weird. I can eat shrimp all day long cause I was raised in a Chinese restaurant. I've learned to love shrimp from a very young age.

I take apple cider vinegar on a regular basis, and drink tons and tons of tang. Vitamin C is great for getting rid of uric acid in the blood. That and celery. Celery juice is a miracle cure for gout.

It's just certain foods that get me. Mechanically separated meat products is one. Like really cheap dollar store chicken nuggets and Salisbury steak kind of stuff. But I can eat chicken and beef just fine. I eat a lot of white rice, too.

Everyone's body is different, I guess.
Pepperthefox

In my experience 'Just Tart Cherry' juice does a good job of helping to keep flare ups at bay. (so long as I don't be a doop and drink beer / eat red meat for a couple days in a row) What I've unfortunately found is a lot of 'tart cherry' juices are still juice blends that 'contain some real tart juice wowee' (see 20% along with juices that can cause flare ups <3) But the glass bottles in the juice / organic section that do say 'Just Tart Cherry' are actually that, brand depending I always just read the label.

I've heard the dried tart cherry's are even better than the juice, I just don't see those around as often. But having a regular two cups a day, one in the morning and one at night has me fending off the uric acid pretty decently. I can actually have one or two beers and reasonable amounts of meats on an average day without getting too much penalty.

It is a bit of a drag that one quart bottle of the stuff costs 7-8 bucks. But with the luck I've had keeping myself joint full of crystals free(tm) I don't mind buying a bottle a week aprox. I'm probably silly for not just buying a case when I get some. I also try to drink several glasses of water a day to keep my hydration up, and do cook heavily with turmeric semi frequently. Unsure of any interaction with gout other than helping reduce inflammation, but I also smoke canna regularly.

Know none of this really salves your foot feeling like you shot it with a twenty two for the moment, but maybe it could be helpful. Like it's been said in here a few times, everyone's body and how they respond are different. (didn't know about the vitamin C thing either, I'll have to keep that in mind.)
MakoRuu

I've tried tart cherry juice before; I can never really afford enough of it to take to treat the problem, though.

Right now I just drink a lot of tang for the vitamin C, take apple cider vinegar, and eat a bunch of naproxen. It's all I can do.
