Skye Reviews: A Quiet Place.

So, a while back, I read this novel by Tim Lebbon called "The Silence."  It's about a deaf girl and her family, who witness as monsters emerge from an ancient cave and take over the world; hunting down anyone or anything that makes any noise above a whisper.

....I'm not sayin'; I'm just sayin'.

This movie is the exact same thing, except WAYYYYYYYYYY scarier.  The novel deals with a more global scale, as we watch the apocalypse occur as the monsters swarm across Europe towards the UK.  This takes place in America, and focuses on the family and their trials, tribulations, and utter f***ing pants-on-head-stupid, easily-avoided-you-friggin'-morons disasters.

Then again, this is a horror film, and if people didn't act brain-meltingly idiotic on occasion, there wouldn't be much of a movie.

All snarking aside, A Quiet Place is one of the most intensely stressful movies I've sat through in recent years.  The movie is akin to a pressure cooker with the safety valve blocked.  Tension builds to a boil within the first ten minutes, and the rest of the movie is just spent waiting for the inevitable explosion.  I admit, I actually came out of the film with a tension headache.

Because the movie is all about silence, any noise at all, not even particularly loud ones lead to jump scares.  The ambiance of the film is what makes it so tense and stressful, as you wait for someone to trip... or someone to cough... or sneeze...  or do anything that will draw the monsters' attention.

Did I enjoy it?  Yeah, actually.  The acting is superb, the atmosphere and setting are well-realized, and it is a hell of a ride.  Will I ever see it again?  F*** NO! o.o;;;

Skye's Final Verdict - A Quiet Place: A-.  I'll be surprised if this doesn't become the horror movie of the year.

This is the kind of thing a horror movie SHOULD do.
