The Lonely Goose

by
For the past week or so there has been this goose just waddling around outside the Quesadilla Shack I work. Goose just mall walks in circles. Sometimes big circles, sometimes small circles. Sometimes it waddles like a damn drunkard. Its by the back door, in the parking lot of an abandoned restaurant. The lot is connected by a few stairs to a sidewalk that runs, of course, parallel to the road.

A few days before this confused and lonely goose appeared, there was another  goose. A big fat one. Laying at the bottom of the stairs. You probably know, geese don't just lay down. They squat until the can't go down anymore and somehow find it comfortable.

So yeah, this goose was dead as all hell. I joke with a co-worker that someone was just trying to make it look like an accident. Next day, one goose is gone, the other is here. I again joke with a co worker that it must be an Easter Miracle, this goose is the one that will save all geese from sin.

Everyone has a big time with zombie jokes and "Walking Goose". You know, wondering how long before it just blows up into maggots. That its just walking around like a zombie because its brain is gone.

All the other geese in town leave. This one remains. Walking.

But now I think, maybe it isn't walking. Maybe its searching. Maybe this goose's buddy or lover made it to this spot, those damnable stairs, and now the Lonely Goose doesn't know where the other goose went. Maybe looking for clues, but there are none. The Lonely Goose isn't really a person, can't like stop and think about what's happening, probably has no concept of death aside from its something to stay away from. So with the information it has "Buddy Goose was here. Buddy Goose isn't here" it keeps trying to figure out what went wrong for it to happen.

The level of stress this Goose must be feeling, sticking around ignoring Goose Instincts to fly back to where ever with every other living goose- wow, it must be incomprehensible. So when Lonely Goose is walking in small circles, that's just anxiety. It must leave but can't, knows it can't leave without Buddy Goose. Refuses to leave without Buddy Goose. Would legitimately rather die than not go with Buddy Goose. When Lonely Goose is walking in larger circles it is trying to figure out a solution to the problem, unable to see the obvious. Doing whatever an animal does that correlates to "hope/believe", like that Japanese dog Hachiko.

I've been hoping for the past day or two that the Lonely Goose will be gone. But whether I work morning shifts, night shifts, swing shifts- the Lonely Goose is there. And it hurts me in a way I can't even really express.
