This journal was created in response to this after I verified the info with an instructor at my school who operates an IT security business: https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3079423/
What I am linking below is free software and utilities to DL and install on your PC. These are legit and highly recommended by one of my instructors who works in the IT security business. I am posting this due to the fact that there is a MULTI-PLATFORM virus that is going around and infecting all OSs. So be careful!
The Belarc Advisor builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware, network inventory, missing Microsoft hotfixes, anti-virus status, security benchmarks, and displays the results in your Web browser. All of your PC profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server.
CCleaner is the number-one tool for cleaning your Windows PC. It protects your privacy online and makes your computer faster and more secure. Easy to use and a small, fast download.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free utilizes Malwarebytes powerful technology to detect and remove all traces of malware including worms, trojans, rootkits, rogues, dialers, spyware and more.

As a bonus for you Mac users, here is something that you may want to look into (there is a similar version for windows PCs somewhere): http://hiddenapp.com/
My instructor also suggested TruCrypt (WARNING!!! be sure to to read and understand what you are doing when using this software, as you may inadvertently encrypt the entire HD. Also if you forget your password, the software can nuke the contents of the HD): http://www.truecrypt.org/

personally I stick to MSE at least for what I do. for my antivirus, though I would get a few and make sure to run only the main one and turn off the main and log off the internet and start up the other in case the main missed something! always best as a backup and such, MSE is rather decent for freeware and I have stuck with it ever since i had found out how to fully utilize it. but I will be getting a cracked copy of windows 7 on a second HDD as a new OS might need to detail a list of what software I currently have so as to install it again.
if you have anything extra you would be willing to share would love to hear more. even info on specific computer parts etc. building one in may but over time as of now. currently has two parts.
