I'm leaning toward Howie (short for Howitzer James Beam, cuz his parents were the worst rednecks). Raised in the Dirty South, his dad was an abusive drunk that was almost always unemployed, while his mom clung to her day job at the only drug store for an hour in each direction, and her night job at a 24/7 Waffle House wannabe. His dad named him after two patriotic things: a gun, and a whiskey. His mom had no say in the naming. His mom stole pills regularly from the store, and one night OD'd to escape his dad when he was 15. His 6 siblings kinda clumped in 2 small groups, with the older ones taking care of the younger ones. Howie was old enough not to need anyone to take care of him, but too young to take care of his younger siblings. As a result, he left on his own and immediately got into drugs and sex with other guys. He earned the nickname "Sludge" by being the one guy in his dealer's ring low enough to wallow in filth for drugs and money. God knows what he's riddled with and how he's survived this long, but he's coming up on five decades of slumming it up in every scum hole he's managed to hitch a ride to. Nobody knows his age for sure, and he doesn't care enough to keep track.
Suddenly backstory is good! Half of the backstory I wrote for Rawley was more or less on-the-spot when I wrote some on a submission for him way back when.
