Artificially Enhanced Soy Sauce

by
I haven't posted in a couple weeks. These things happen. Partially work at the Quesadilla Shack getting wacky, partially some home life stuff, partially my horrible thumb trauma.

I went to a grocery store this morning, ended up spending way too much, I think. When I shop, I don't tend to use a cart, I carry as much as I can. If I can't carry it, I don't buy it I told the cashier. She said that was a Smart philosophy, I smiled knowingly as I tend to do when so blatantly praised.

Then, I remembered there was more stuff I wanted to try, so instead of leaving it for next time, I gathered up all of the groceries and marched back to the far end of the store and picked up two store brand, not-frozen sushi. Now, I'm no fool. The reason I never ate sushi in the previous state I lived in was because it was landlocked. There was no way fish could be coming in fresh enough for me to eat raw and not be weirded out. This store brand, not-frozen sushi was American "sushi for white trash". California roll and spicy Krab.

Back at the cash register, I unloaded again and the cashier again was surprised at how much pizza and chicken and burritos I can carry. There was a glint in her eye that I read into "You don't really Need most of this". I told her the fatal flaw of the carrying groceries system is that instead of consistently only buying what you need, you get Really Good at carrying a bunch of things. I don't know why I told her, it felt appropriate at the time.

I get back to my dwelling and put away the frozen items that I don't plan on eating immediately, as the oven preheats I sample a few of the items I took a chance on, one was the above mentioned soy sauce. It wasn't the kind of party I was expecting. The ready-to-eat Ameritrash sushi had sugar in the rice. I should have expected it, but I was thinking maybe they'd go the Dollar Tree route.

You know how sometimes you buy cheap tortilla chips and they're over salted to try to distract from how bad they are? Dollar tree skimps on the salt, so in a way they taste classier/more refined/more expensive than more expensive cheap tortilla chips. I was hoping sushi would be the same way, instead of using sugar in the rice to emulate the faint sweetness of Mirin, they'd just omit that part and be tastier for it.

It isn't bad American sushi. I just wouldn't want to buy it again. Rather, I wouldn't want to be in the state of mind required to want to buy it again.

I also had a dream last night that the local park recently had someone cut the grass and do landscaping and I was sad because a family of raccoons was living in the overgrown monkey grass. One of them was injured. They chased me. I kept running but couldn't get away. Moral of the story, dreams are stupid and don't go to parks.

I always consider buying supermarket sushi when I see it, but my better judgment knows that I should not.  I'm sure it doesn't compare to what I can get in a restaurant.  Doesn't the rice have sugar in it by default, though?  I thought it was rice vinegar, sugar, and salt.  Anyway, I'm the same way with grocery shopping.  I have to walk everything back home so I tend to make pretty frequent trips for ingredients.

Places like Harris Teeter or Whole Foods have sushi made in store. That isn't scary. Okami is a nation-wise supplier for grocery stores and (sometimes) Gas Stations. Not Scary, but it is low quality. The sushi I bought was for a lower-end grocery, but surprisingly it was actually better sushi than the last time I bought from my most local establishment. Granted, as stated, I only picked up the American rolls, but the avocado was ripe at least.
