No More Commissions and Patreon

Omg what a loving welcome back! Thanks so much, I missed you guys too!

I've already gotten a TON of commission questions so I felt it might be best to make a journal so I don't have to rinse and repeat! X3 I won't be taking commissions in the traditional sense anymore*.

It's part of the reason my art suffered just before I dropped off the map. I took too many, pressured myself, wasn't happy with the results, kept people waiting. It was making me feel awful.

Q. Couldn't you just take fewer at a time?
I suppose, but I'd rather not pick and choose.

Q. How the heck do I get art from you!? T^T
I have a Patreon now and the higher tiers have options for requests. I select from the group from last month and draw whatever sounds the most appealing. If I reach my goal, I'll reopen commissions.

Q. But I'm broke!!!!
Sometimes I'll take requests during streams! Even my lowest tiers ($1) get access to those.

Q. I'm gonna punch your Patreon in the butthole.
I know, I know! But it really takes a lot of the stress and pressure off me and I can create at my own pace! Maybe one day I'll open higher tiers for full commissions? (But idk man $30 is already kind of a lot imo).

Q. Alright what do I even get?
My arts, my affection, and a series of one-shotty cubsitting comics featuring Catfiddle and (sometimes, depends on willing participants ) patron cubs! They'll be at least 3 pages and at most ??? pages. I say one-shot because lengthier comics are hard for me @_@

If you have other questions please ask, I'm new to patreon and don't want mine to suck.

Here I thought you were actually coming back. It's such a shame to see the artists I enjoy get swept up into this Patreon craze, thinking it's going to make everything better.

There is no magical easy-street for making a living on your art.

Nah, I'll still be posting here but not on FA because apparently there was a cub crackdown while I was away (?). As I said, I know all too well what it's like no have no money.

That being said, I take 0 offense to your comments! And I agree there's no such thing as an "easy street." But there's also nothing wrong with wanting to make a living off of your art.

I don't fault people for trying. I just don't think they're fully prepared for what they're getting into with Patreon. Be careful on that site. People have had hundreds of dollars taken out of their bank accounts because the site got hacked, and Patreon won't take responsibility. Artists have had issues with people canceling payments before the end of the month. Etc.

Very few artists actually make enough on Patreon to make it worth while.

Ill put this as civil as I can.
$20 a month just to SEE the colored comic pages is utter overkill.
I want to pledge to you but honestly I can't afford nor would I ever be willing to afford to pay $20 for the privilege of seeing a small comic.

I wish you luck and if you ever revise your rewards I'll look into it again.

That makes sense I suppose! What do you suggest I alter my rewards to that would make it more fair? I'm flattered you even thought about being my patron and was being honest when I said I don't want mine to suck. I'm open to suggestions!

Generally with newer paterons anything non personal doesent go above 15, bare in mind I sad NEW. Prices can be negotiated once you've developed a decent content base.
I'd say low range for colored comic pages would be 5 and high range would be 15 to start. you'll have to start low and have your high tier have special things. It will be a slower start up but more people will stick with you and if they see how good your work is they'll be more likely to upgrade to higher tiers later

I has a sad.  $30 a month to get new comic pages? D:

Maybe you could do a thing where Patrons get the pages a month or two (maybe three) before they're released publicly, and then have the public pages be lower resolution than the Patreon versions.  Same with the rest of the artwork tiers.  Timed exclusivity along with higher resolution for Patreon.

Just an idea.  There's usually a bit of backlash when artists use Patreon as a paywall for their stuff, even if it's just a portion of their work.  I think the idea of higher-resolution images along with stream access, requests, and the other stuff would still draw some people.  As well as those who must see things right now and don't want to wait.

Now that sounds like a good idea! I could release them in groups or something after I finish a bunch! Wouldn't that be cool?! I'd also sometimes be working on comic pages when I stream too~

I understand the paywall thing. I just need to make sure the amount of time I spend doing them is covered. My other alternative is to just not do comics I suppose. Idk I need to think on this but what do you think about releasing them when I have a bunch saved up??

That sounds good, yeah.

Maybe you could add more goals.  Like, say, $50 a month means one comic page a month, $100 for two, etc.  Not as donation tiers, but as the collective goal.  Like your $800 goal.  That way, you have it spelled out how many comic pages you'll do per month, and it gives people more incentive to pledge.  You won't do the comic unless you have X amount of money each month.  That means the $20 and $30 tiers would have to be reworded with the condition that the comic is met in order to get the pages.

Of course, what I gave is just an example.  I don't know how much value you place on your comic page work.

You might get more people to pledge if they know that by getting X amount each month that you'll do the comic.  And you wouldn't be required to make the comic if you don't have enough money pledged per month.  That way, if you have a slow start, or if Patrons start to drop off, you can delay the comic as needed.

In the end, everyone wins.  In theory, at least.  The people who can't (or won't) support you don't lose any art, they just have to wait and get smaller versions of it.  You don't have to draw the comic unless you're getting enough per month to cover your time.  And people who are able and do wish to support you get higher-quality versions of your art faster.
