My initial reaction was a short sigh followed by a "well duh." It totally makes sense for furries to really grab onto this show, honestly. It is cute, it is fun to watch, and hell, it reminds me of shit like Powerpuff Girls in that I watched that as a kid and loved it even though it was for girls and all. My Little Pony is a really good children's show. I've haven't seen a show this decade or the past naughts that has really catered intelligent and smart humor for kids into a show primarily targeted for young girls. In that sense, it's pretty damn great.
The brony fandom, however.... Look okay most bronies I've met seem to actually enjoy watching the show. But the fandom still reeks of hipster irony. "I'm a 22 year old man but I love My Little Pony." At a party you'd sure as fuck have to pass it off as ironic, unless your friends or nerds or something. Maybe they sort have coerced themselves into enjoying it more then they really do. And if Season 2 drops the ball on quality, this whole thing will be a fad, Scenario 1, or Scenario 2 could occur. Scenario 2 is what happened to Super Smash Brothers, where people made it out to be better than it was. (SSB is a party fighting game that's more fun with items but people turn off the items and make it into a legitimate fighting game along the lines of Tekken or something because they just enjoy the novelty of both Nintendo characters and ring outs.) To me, it's like a bunch of straight nerds who want to dabble in something a little gay (MLP is gay. It just is.) I mean I'm a gay dude, and yet I freaked out in excitement over the new FIFA demo. We're all allowed to like things outside of our stereotypical interests. But there's this sort of brash, in-your-faceness about the bronies. They really really like to show off how brony they are to gauge reactions (and gauging reactions is a hobby of mine so im not judging) and I think part of them hopes they have to explain how non-gay their hobby is, and that it is a legitimate passion.
If you actually like something, you don't have to justify liking it. Just go on liking it.
My irl friends think I'm a furry ironically.
