Scanner problem...

by
When I try to scan artwork, my scanner seems to have a problem with reds and browns and darker colors where it will over saturate and make things in general look terrible.

Aside from using a camera instead of scanner, anyone have any ideas how to make it stop doing this?

I'm using an Epson Perfection V300 Photo.

Well I just scanned the same image on my 'cheap' Brother all in one printer scanner, and it did a better job...starting to wonder if there is something wrong with the Epson

It's likely something in the Epson scanner software.  Many try to auto-adjust the brightness, contrast or color, and they rarely get it right.  Look through everything and try turning off any auto adjust features. Some, like my HP scanner, won't even allow everything to be set to manual, so it's impossible to get an accurate scan.  Also, some scanners just seem to be better at scanning than others, and it doesn't seem to have much to do with their cost. Many times, a cheap $60 scanner will do better than an expensive $400 one.

Before assuming one scanner is worse than the other, be sure to calibrate your monitor.  Look up gamma and color calibration. You want your monitor to be displaying as close to standard as possible, then adjust your scanner settings to look the best with that. If your monitor is out of calibration, then you can't really be sure which scanner is actually doing the best job.

My printer seems to scan as it copies, BUT it tends to magnify and maximize defects and such in the picture. I've been re-formatting some 47 years of graph designs of a computer game, and all kinds of blotches show up that were not obvious in the originals. The older the page, the worse the mess. It's a mix of disgust and achievement.

Some pics show the reds as awful.

Don't ask me to replace the printer. It's the first one that could and did send the pics to my gallery here.
