Trains, why don't they work better?

So I recently went into looking into Amtrak to go visit some far off friends because: 1. It's cheaper, and 2. I've never been on a train. What I find is what seems to be a not so convenient system in which there is not a large amount of trains in which service the system long distance, and I have a feeling that if I choose to use this mode of transportation, I will find myself the target of the expression "Well you're just shit out of luck." I know that I'm possibly thinking of the worst possible scenario in which a train breaks down or is late, but I feel that a system that was once glorious in the past that is still fondly remembered should be better.

I feel like this could have been our answer to the recession as an infrastructure that could have been expanded/revamped by the Federal government pouring money into laying new track, building new stations, adding faster trains to certain lines, and so forth. Though when I think about the Great Depression and the New Deal, I remember that generation didn't care what they did as long as they had a job, and yet people today would see the signs for "Need Labor to lay Track" and would think that beneath them even though they've been unemployed since they got out of college because they won't move to where they can use their degree/experience. I know I'm being harsh and there are people who would gladly do that job, but there are too many that don't.

Trains, we should make them better. They are the cheapest way for us Furs to travel, although they are the longest. Plus you can claim that America is falling behind on train tech and that as a means of mass transportation they help the environment. I feel they are a bipartisan issue that everyone can get behind.
