To Explain: The Unborn Globes

Back in time, before Anthrocon moved out of Philadelphia, I was attending and got a surprise invite to a room party. This was a sketch-book room party, which was even more awesome. So with sketch book in tow, I went to socialize.

Cara Mitton was there, of all people. I love her work, so it was a nice surprise. However she was wiped out and feeling ill, so the joy was limited to sympathetic smiles. Poor thing.

I asked nicely if she's swap sketchbooks. Her reaction was one I couldn't read and I got worried. She was surprised by my asking, I discovered later. Her book-theme was "weird and different".

Now I had not slept. No, I'm serious. I had not slept for over 27 hours at that point. I was a bit loopy. I had already drawn another sketch-book-swap artist's character as a fetus. So in this case I giggle and took it one step further. I thought.. COULD I cause a twitch reaction in Cara? I had a challenge.

Mix determination with exhaustion and likely mild insanity due to lack of sleep. It was tiny. It didn't take up much space in her sketchbook. I actually felt bad about it when I saw the amazing piece she left in my sketchbook. However I kept seeing her STARE at it for a while. I again got concerned... I asked her if it was ok?

She looked at me with huge EYES O.O

She told me it was amazing. She almost cried. I chalked it up to her being equally exhausted.

Then she passed the book around to everyone else. Their reactions ranged from quirked eyebrows, to smiles, to words of amazement. Suffice to say, for a dinky little nothing of a sketch I felt a bit over-awed by the reactions.

What was it?

A dolphin fetus in a globe, supported by some kind of "steam-punk-esque" contraption with wheels and an arm for manipulating things like doors and what not. I was asked how does it work.

Telepathy/telekinesis? That blew her mind apparently.

I've since put a little more symbolic meaning into the pairing of bases to creatures. Although given time I might go back to a more steam-punk-esque base style with symbolic bits to it? I don't know, I'll have to see how it evolves. ;)

Would you like a custom one? Or have your character fetal-ized in a globe? Send me a PM. My regular rates do apply.
