Consent

It shouldn’t need to be said (but you’d be surprised how things that ought to be obvious…aren’t, for some people), but every single interaction you have with other human beings involves consent at some level. If you are interacting with an individual who is not wide awake and in possession of their mental faculties, you cannot gain consent. Doing anything without an individual’s consent is wrong, full stop. (There are exceptions to this rule, but those exceptions apply only for the purpose of saving your life.)

Corollaries to this include:
* It is not okay to hit another person unless you are afraid for your life and cannot remove yourself from the situation.
* It is not okay to touch someone without their permission.
* It is doubly not okay to touch them in inappropriate places without their permission, even if they are not able to give permission.
* It is your job as a parent, guardian, or caretaker to ensure that your charges are taught all of these things. It doesn’t matter if they are boys or girls; rape is not a crime that is committed solely by men targeting only women.
