Did you, as the reader, learn about this wolf? What type of person he is? Does he seem like an unhinged, dangerous individual with a hair trigger and violent tendencies? If you picked up on that oh-so-subtle writing, then congratulations, mission accomplished.
Sometimes violence is just violence. Was it justified? Of course not. That IS the point. The context is that we now know what he's capable of, and how easily he can just go off. We met a monster. We also met the sweet author lady, Lena Stein. You should hopefully be thinking at this point: "Oh no! I worry for her safety if THIS guy is interested in her for whatever reason!"
