The game uses a dual-worlds mechanic, a Light World and a Dark World. Individuals that travel from the Light World to the Dark World transform according to their nature or personality. Some people turn into monsters, others into animals, others into weird objects like disembodied hands or bouncing balls. Link's Dark World form is that of a pink-furred rabbit, meaning he can't use most of his items (including his sword) unless he finds a way (an item in a dungeon) to preserve his form in the Dark World.
