It's not critical to know this, but I think it helps. Unfortunately the story before Size Matters 2 where Desmond gets his Nether Dragon didn't get finished in time to explain it. Her tree will also get explained in that story.

What MafyRealign27 is correct. It's also implied that Chani never saw any families with Venkat and Viridi couples. Desmond brings it up on page 16 when saying they rarely ever mate.

It has a double meaning. Chani doesn't really feel like a member of her own family (this is touched on in A Story Never Told Part 3) so in a way she's getting one by joining with Desmond regardless of if they have hatchlings. The other IS her having hatchlings with Desmond.
