Well, depend what kind of propieties the layer has, example huge pictures on layers get the program slow, plus with effects like shadows, transparence, etc. Maybe you can have many layers, but what kind of layers, then maybe will exist a problem for the future.
Example, in this video if you see when I work the "lighting colors", look on the left corner how is increasing the size of the file, but when I mix if all and I am starting to put colors and the last details on the character, then is reduced. In my pictures this is the critical moment, when is before mix all the layers.
