These are Wichtel, house spirits which are popular in Northern and Middle Europe. Wichtel are friendly beings and they are often protrayed as somewhat human like but with very big heads and hats. They often bring gifts to children at Christmas in old stories although they don't want to be seen or non. Some anthropologists believe that the elves of Santa Claus are at least in part based upon the Wichtel.
