Quite literally, the ability to audit the elections is what prevents a Hitler or a Stalin to take and hold power. The legitimacy of an election stems from the ability to walk through from setting up the hardware and data used for the election to counting every individual vote. This does not destroy the anonymity of the vote, as the general public cannot look up that information.
And for the record; Hitler, Stalin, and the KKK all held control by controlling the polling places; preventing the proper observers from seeing the votes, kicking out observers, threatening violence against the opposing voters, stuffing ballot boxes and calling illegal votes legitimate, counting select legitimate votes as illegitimate, destroying votes for opposing parties, getting local news sources to side with them so that news articles were flattering of the political party while they played dirty in the background.
