The Care Bears
The Confidence Secret
1st Part
Chapter 03

*****

Trueheart was busy in the kitchen, finishing preparing dinner for her and her husband, for Grumpy would not have dinner with them tonight because he was busy in the workshop, fixing the cloud car of the teenagers. So the bear took the opportunity to reflect on everything that had happened in her life with Nobleheart. And they had been many adventures since the two met and since they became the leaders of the Care Bears Family. But there was something wrong with the horse in recent times, which worried a bit Trueheart. He complained a lot that the two of them were distant and that the wife paid him no attention. This really was true, since there was no time for her to pay attention to her husband and take care of her family. The two had distanced themselves a little after the Great Wishing Star had given them the task of caring for the orphaned cubs. Since then the couple has given way to leaders and tutors, and their lives have never been the same.
Not that they complained, since they had a place to live and did what they liked thanks to the generosity of the Great Wishing Star. And Trueheart was quite content with all this. Nobleheart too, certainly, but he no longer showed the same enthusiasm of the first few days of living in Care-a-Lot, seeming to be tired of all that, relapsing into his duties as a leader, which displeased his wife much.
The horse, meanwhile, entered the kitchen and saw the female bear working to decorate the fruitcake she had made. How beautiful she looked! Ever since he had seen her naked that morning, the fire of love had rekindled as in the days when they were married. It was the love between man and woman, not brotherly love that they usually treated each other. A feeling that Nobleheart has not experienced for long ago. Silently, he went to the bear and hugged her from behind.
- Ah! Noble, look what you did! - she cried, who with the shock of being caught, dropped the bowl of candy on the floor.
- Forget those candies a little, my dear - said the horse, smiling sweetly - After all, there are so many more important things to do...
- Of course there is! Collect this mess you made me do. Let go of me now!
With no alternative, the husband let go of his beloved, who bent over to collect the sweets on the floor. But Nobleheart was unhappy with Trueheart's chilly manner, and when she turned her back on him, he could not contain the desire to give a strong malicious pinch to his wife, who gave a cry of pain and surprise at that.
- What's that? - she yelled, jumping away from the horse and rubbing her hands where he pinched her - Are you going crazy?!?
- You liked it when you were younger - Nobleheart said, smiling - And your butt is still good for pinching.
- Noble! What kind of language is this? You bewitched by No Heart or did you take something he should not have?
- I've never been so lucid in my life.
And he began to walk toward his wife, his eyes burning with desire, while she, trapped, did not know what to do. The horse was about to pick her up when someone rang the doorbell of their house.
- TT-The bell! - Trueheart said with great expansion of relief, pushing her husband to the side and heading for the door.
Nobleheart leaned back against the wall with a sulky face. Would he never have a moment of peace with his wife again?
The female bear ran to the door, but before opening it, she sighed heavily so as not to reveal the emotion and the fright she had felt moments before. Anyway, when it opened, there was Grams Bear, smiling, with a picnic basket in his hands and an animated look. Actually her name was not Grams Bear, but everyone called her by the nickname, so if someone called her by her real name, Flower Heart Bear, no one would know who it was.
- Ah, my dear, how are you? - asked the old lady with a smile - I hope I'm not bothering you at all...
- Actually, it's all right - said Trueheart, motioning for the old woman to come in - But what brings you here?
- I made some snacks, and I've decided to bring you some of it - and saying that, she put the small basket of food on the table - And I wanted to talk to you about something that bothers me a lot.
Nobleheart entered the room.
- I hope it's not me that's bothering you - he said with a malicious glance at Trueheart as he squeezed the old bear's paw.
- Of course not - said Grams with a laugh. "But we can talk about it later."
- And where are Tugs and Hugs? - asked the horse.
- They're with Bright Heart. Soon they will arrive here as well.
*****
- Make it fly higher, Bright Heart - Tugs shouted.
- No, it does fly lower - Hugs said, jumping up.
- If I figure out how to handle it right, then I can fly wherever you want - said the raccoon, running with the remote control in his hands.
Bright Heart was an inventor by profession, but usually his inventions either did not work or were useless. He spent more time holed up in his workshop building things than on missions to protect love on earth. But his intentions were good, such as building devices that would help bears and cousins get faster in emergencies, or even machines that would help prevent someone from doing something bad.
At that moment he was testing a device to guide the cloud cars in a remote way, and for that he set up a small model in toy and that was trying to control, but he could not even figure out how worked the remote control that he himself had built.
Hugs and Tugs were with Grams Bear when they saw the raccoon start the test and decided to stay with the inventor, who was now desperate trying to control the toy, which looked more like an uncontrolled missile. The two cubs stopped running, and the inventor managed to catch them almost out of breath.
- Well, let's see if this works now - he said more to himself than to the two companions, who paid attention to everything the raccoon did.
By pressing one of the buttons, the small cloud car turned to the side of the three and came with a bomber plane ready to attack them. In desperation, Bright Heart turned the control lever to all sides, managing to divert the toy at the last moment. Still, he had to throw himself to the ground so as not to be hit by the object.
The toy still rose a little, before his engine stopped and he fell into the cloud floor, mingling with them. When falling, it landed practically next to where Champ and Confidence had just parked Grumpy's cloud car, and the two newcomers stared at the raccoon, which had a sad appearance of failure.
- Hey! What is it, Bright Heart? - asked the fox when he saw the sad countenance of his friend.
- That was my new invention - said the raccoon, taking his toy, which was slightly damaged by the fall, and looking at him.
At the same time Hugs and Tugs came running and jumped happily on Champ, knocking him to the ground.
- Hey! Beware, sports fans! – he said amiably.
- We were missing you - Hugs said cheerfully.
- But we saw each other this morning.
- For this very reason, it was morning. We had not seen you this afternoon - Tugs said - And Confidence does not either - he added, as the two pups jumped from Champ to the fox's lap, which also fell to the ground in surprise.
- Well, I'm glad to hear that you miss me, although I lived here a short time ago - Confidence said with a smile.
- Where's Grams Bear? - asked the sportsman.
- She's in the home of Noble and Trueheart's, while Bright Heart looked after us - Hugs explained, smiling.
- We'll meet them now - Tugs said - Do you want to come too?
- I don't think it's a problem for us go to the Care Bears Family founders' house - said Champ with a wink - What do you think?
- For me, alright - Confidence said, smiling.
Bright Heart looked at the two sportsmen and the cubs before answering something.
- Well, alright, but first I wanted to talk to you alone with you, Champ. Could you take care of the cubs, and here, Confidence? - he asked indicating the remote control and the small car cloud.
- Of course - said the young fox.
Leaving his invention and the twin cubs along with Confidence, Bright Heart and Champ walked away a bit to talk more intimately.
- Where's your vest and cap, sports fan? - asked the bear, seeing his friend without his usual outfit.
- I left them in the workshop. But I want to say something important to you. It's about Cheer.
- What about her? - asked Champ, all attentive and frightened.
- Jealous of not having you around. I don't think you even noticed, but ever since Confidence arrived here, Cheer is worried about her sudden friendship with our new friend. After all, you two combine a lot, which left Cheer feeling insecure about your feelings towards her, even because you two never talked openly in courtship...
It was no secret that Champ and Cheer had something more than a friendship, even though they had never formally started dating. There were walks, caresses, even a few stolen kisses had already taken place since the two of them lived together in the teen’s house. And this was a relationship that many wanted to make it work. So the bear was amazed at what his friend was saying to him, looking thoughtful for a moment.
- I have nothing to do with Confidence - he retorted energetically - We're just two good friends. Where did Cheer take such idiotic thought?
- That I can’t say - Bright Heart replied, smiling - Maybe she just feels out of place because you now also pay attention to another girl besides her own.
- What do you think I should do? - asked the bear after a few moments of silence - I do not want to hurt Cheer, but I will not end my friendship with Confidence because my best friend is jealous.
- You know I already have my troubles on this subject, and I'm doing too much to tell you what's going on. You two have to talk about the love you have for each other.
- Bright Heart! That's a secret!
- I did not tell anyone, don't worry. But everyone here knows that you two have a ..."roll," as humans say. Or do you think no one has ever noticed their looks, their caresses, their walks to two?...
Champ was ashamed to hear it, and he smiled a little.
- Well... I guess I was not as discreet as you and Gentle Heart - said the sportsman with a small laugh.
For a moment Bright Heart widened his eyes, surprised by his friend's words, until he laughed out loud to realize that everyone else had already realized that he and Gentle Heart Lamb loved each other, but they were shy to the point of never having said anything about it with each other. Their laughter caught Champ, and soon they were laughing at that situation until they heard Confidence shout:
- Caution!!!
They both threw themselves on the ground, just as the little cloud car passed over them, pirouetting in the heavens and then a large circle.
- What's that? - the raccoon asked astonished.
At that same hour, the fighting fennec came to their side, with the two twin cubs jumping with joy.
- Confidence repaired the toy cloud car! - said the two baby bears.
The inventor stared at the gymnast as if he could not believe it.
- Until it was not difficult - she said, bringing the toy to where they were and making it land safely at the feet of its inventor - It was only change the position of the antenna so that it would work. It's a good invention.
- TT-Thank you - said the raccoon, surprised by the compliment and the invention to have worked - I don't know how I had not thought of that before.
- And you two have you talked? - Tugs asked for Bright Heart and Champ - Can we find Grams Bear now?"
- Of course, sports fan! - said the sportsman - C'mon!
*****
Nobleheart wasn't happy at dinner. He had spent most of his time eating in silence, since he did not want to say anything. He was actually annoyed at having so many people in his house. He wanted a moment of peace with Trueheart, and he felt that this was far from occurring.
On the other hand, his wife was happy with the coming of Champ, Bright Heart, Grams, the Cubs and even Confidence. Everyone had a place in her heart, even that young Fennec who had come only a few months before, and whom she did not like very much. Still, the female bear was happy to have the house full of her adoptive friends and children, for she considered them so.
After dinner, Grams went into the living room, where he began to tell stories to his two grandchildren, and his audience had the housewife, the fox and the raccoon to listen to. As for Champ, he was far away and preferred to stay in the kitchen, helping Nobleheart do the dishes. In fact, he wanted to talk to the patriarch about what Bright Heart had told him shortly before, and ask for some guidance.
- And what would that be about? - asked the horse when the sportsman said he wanted to talk.
- About my relationship with Cheer - the young man replied with a little shame, blushing.
Noble Heart Horse leaned back in the sink and laughed at how embarrassed the bear was. Champ did not understand why.
- I came to ask your advice, and not to see you laughing at my face - the bear snarled gruffly.
- Oh, I'm sorry Champ. I did not want to offend him. But it is that his relationship with Cheer is so well known that I could not help but laugh with his shame at talking about it. But come on, tell him what torments him?
- She's jealous of my friendship with Confidence, feeling insecure about how I feel about her.
- I don't even need to be a fortune teller to know why she is like this. You and Confidence are very similar, both play sports, are stubborn, persevering, strong, and like the same things, while Cheer, despite also enjoying sports and having a strong genius, much prefers the world of fashion and cosmetics. I think you two, despite loving each other, never talked about it, did you?
- Not really... Do you think I should take the initiative now that I've found out she's jealous?
- Of course yes! - Nobleheart exclaimed excitedly - It is the man who has to take that gentlemanly attitude. And you're not doing it. Go to Cheer, confirm your feelings for her, and make her see that she owns your heart!
- And that would make her no longer jealous?
- Certainly. Although... I confess that if I were good with women, I would have solved all my problems with Trueheart. It's easier for you to talk to Love-a-Lot about love than with me...
Champ smiled at this, and put his hand on the patriarch's shoulder.
- So you're in trouble too? - the bear questioned, blandly - I think we're in the same mess, then...
Nobleheart laughed at those words as he finished washing the dishes with the bear. In fact, the horse had a high regard for Champ, considering him the bravest, strongest, most loving and faithful of bears and cousins, and therefore the perfect candidate for the future leader of the Family. Now the patriarch was only waiting for the teenager to turn eighteen to propose that he start training to be a leader, and knowing the sportsman as he knew it, Champ would surely accept.
Shortly afterwards they joined the others in the room, listening to the end of the story that Grams Bear told. The cubs were already sleepy, it was past their time to sleep. As the older female bear still wanted to talk to the hosts, she asked Champ and Confidence to take the twins home, which they quickly accepted as they still needed to pass the Hall of Hearts and present the mission report. As for Bright Heart, taking advantage of the moment, also said goodbye to his friends and went to his workshop to improve his invention.
- Well, finally alone - said Trueheart, sitting down on the couch opposite Nobleheart - Now tell me what ails you, Grams.
The old woman frowned for a few seconds, concentrating, and then starting to speak.
- Maybe you two think it's because of my age, or even that it's prejudice, but there's something I can’t accept or believe. I know when someone is lying, and even though she's an excellent actress I know she's somehow lying to us.
- She, who? - the couple asked at the same time.
- Confidence! - Grams replied incisively - Something tells me she's lying to us, after all, we three know what her origin is.
- I confess I also have that impression - said Trueheart thoughtfully - Even if your story makes sense, she still seems to know a lot more of what she actually told us.
- I don't want to judge her in any way, but if we look closely at what she's told, we'll see a lot of inconsistencies with what we know about her, assuming she's really the same girl we know one day. How did survive? Where will your parents be? How did she get to the Forest of Feelings? Where did she learn to fight karate like that? Why have she never contacted us before? Why can’t she use her Stare? And most of all, how did she get her symbol?
- Confidence said at our first meeting that she lived with a human brother in Canada, and whose foster parents died when she was a cub - Nobleheart began to respond calmly - She said was found on a trip to Africa, and was adopted by the family, being cared for by the brother when they were orphaned. It was with him that she learned to fight karate, getting to the point where she is today. When her brother died, one night she found the Great Wishing Star, which gave her symbol and guided her to the Forest of Feelings, so she could find others of her kind. Alone, she never learned to use her Stare and was never interested in learning.
- And you believed that story? - Trueheart asked, glaring at the husband with an irritated countenance.
- It's pretty suspicious to me - Grams said, arching his eyebrows.
- And for me it's quite consistent - Nobleheart remarked - Remember that Aqua, Lonesomeheart, and Redemption were adopted by an elf, which they regard to this day as an older brother. Why could not Confidence have been adopted by a human? What would she have to lie to us about it?
- It's up to us to find out - answered the yellow pastel bear - If she were in the Paradise Valley along with Perfect and Polite, that would be another story, but...
- You're trying to find feathers on fish - the purple horse joked - So far she hasn't gave us reason to suspect her, and she's lived with us for over a year. I see no reason for us to watch her more closely...
- But I see - Grams Bear replied after looking at Trueheart - It may be that she's lying to a good cause, but we need to make sure of that, and we should watch her at least for a while.
- So I'll look for Champ tomorrow and ask him to keep an eye on the fennec - said Trueheart with a smile, to Noble's disgust that rolled his eyes - I'm sure he'll help us after hearing the reasons.
- So if it's all settled, I do not need to bother you anymore - said the old bear with a satisfied smile, taking her things and giving the bear a hug and a handshake to the horse - I wish you both a good night.
- Finally alone - Nobleheart said maliciously to his wife when she had just locked the door - Can we now...
- If you say anything else, you sleep on the couch! - Trueheart interrupted sharply - And if you try anything with me at night, I swear I punch your stomach. Do you understand, my little dear? Good evening to you, too - and slammed the bedroom door in the face of the husband, who was very displeased with the situation.
*****
All Carebear and Carebear Cousins who performed caring missions needed to fill out a report at the end of the day to specify their actions and maintain quality control over the work done by Care Bear Family. It had been developed by Noble Heart as a way to help identify problems with a bear or cousin, help with general training and conflict resolution, and predict everyday situations for each of the Family members with humans.
Although anyone could fill out the reports, this was usually a job done by Nobleheart, Trueheart, Tenderheart or Braveheart, and Shimmers was also being trained for this type of service. And it was the swordsman, along with the brown bear and the lion, who was on duty that night in the Hall of Hearts, while Champ and Confidence presented the account of its mission.
- It took a few hours for Hector to trust us - said the athletic bear calmly - At first he was very wary, but then he relaxed and joked with us, but it was too late to talk to the boy's friends, so Confidence and I decided to continue the mission tomorrow.
- Completely irregular procedure - said Braveheart, shaking his head - You know we have to do our best to finish our mission on the same day, and not allow accumulating tasks for the next few days. Besides, you could have stayed a bit longer and talked to the boy's father.
- But you yourself said that first we had to regain Hector's confidence in sports and friends, and then we should talk to his father!
- And you could have done it yet!
- Hey! Calm down, friends - Tenderheart said in a placating tone - If Champ thought it best to delay the rest of the mission for tomorrow, I'll trust his judgment. I did it myself today, in relation to my mission with Ralph and Carlos, and I preferred to leave the conclusion for tomorrow.
- Our goal is to complete the missions on the same day, but I know that this is not always possible because of a number of factors, and I agree that we should trust Champ's decision - Shimmers added with a smirk before turning back to Confidence - And speaking of trust, I'd like to hear your opinion about how our sportsman friend is conducting the mission.
- Certainly better than I would - the fennec said in a friendly tone - He's being calm, and really trying to win Hector's friendship. That kid's is going need a little attention, and Champ is doing well in that. And he acted correctly, in my opinion, dividing the mission in two days. We would not have time to talk to all of Hector's friends.
For a few seconds everyone was silent until Braveheart finally sighed and smiled in the young athlete's direction.
- All right, Champ; I trust your choices too - he said with a friendly wink - I'm sorry if I'm looking very picky, I just want to make sure you're ready for adulthood.
- I know that, sport fan, and I'm not upset that you wish the best for me - the sportsman replied cheerfully - After all, all coaches want only the best for their athletes, and you and Tenderheart are great coaches.
- Thank you for considering us that way, Champ - said the leading bear, finishing the report - Take the time you need to successfully complete your mission, since it is certainly the most important one in your life. You and Confidence are excused.
The two athletes wished their friends good night, and while the fennec went to the gym to train a little, the bear went home to rest. Only the three young leaders were in the room, Tenderheart read the report again and Braveheart and Shimmers talked about Champ's future.
- Surely he will be an excellent leader in the future - said the feline with a broad smile - He has all the qualities necessary to work with us, including team spirit and victory.
- I agree with you, Champ is a special bear - the swordsman said quietly - He has stood out a lot in recent months, and has become more mature and self-assured, understanding the role and image he has before Care Bear Family and the children. I just hope he likes bureaucratic work...
- Honestly I doubt he likes it, but it's something necessary for Care Bear Family to function well - Tenderheart said, looking toward his friend - And I do not understand why you find it odd that I like this kind of task so much. Certainly it is something more normal than liking tickling, as in your case, or acting strangely and solitary as in the case of Confidence.
- You think she's strange, too? - Braveheart asked curiously.
- Yes, after all she does not seem to want to deepen her coexistence with the other bears and cousins, or perform caring missions. But justice is done, she seems to deal well with children, and certainly the point is not this.
- Well, about her not performing caring missions, I think we could talk to her and make her see that it's about time she started her crash course like Care Bear Cousin, including learning to use Stare, driving a cloud car and performing assistance missions... If she feels prepared.
- She's lived with us for almost a year and a half, how could she not yet feel prepared?!?
- You know every person has his own personality, Tenderheart, and we can't force Confidence to do something that she really may not yet be ready to perform -  Shimmers said quietly - I took many months myself to feel comfortable enough before starting my course to carry out caring missions. Let her also feel comfortable to begin her course.
- Even so, I think we could still look for her to talk and show her we'll be here to help her with whatever she needs - Braveheart said thoughtfully - We could also go to Champ and suggest that, after he turns 18, he's the Confidence instructor. After all, the two are great friends and that would make her feel more comfortable...
- Well... It may work - agreed the swordsman after a short silence - And who can be the observer of both? Loyal Heart? Lotsa Heart?
- Maybe you can be the observer - Tenderheart suggested with a little smile - You have not had that experience yet, and who knows, it makes you start liking bureaucratic work... What do you think?
The two young leaders looked in the direction of Shimmers, who stood with his head down and arms crossed, pensive.
- I think I'll have to think about it a little - he said after a moment - But we still have a month until Champ turns 18 and to talks with Confidence. Now I'd better go home, since Wish is waiting for me. Good night friends.
And silently the swordsman left the room, leaving his two friends alone and not knowing for sure what he would decide.
