Trash

Sonic's POV

"Be silent, we still don't know if it's him or a impostor."

"He must be, just look at him."

"I doubt Sonic doesn't have... something like that wouldn't happen to him, he stinks, it seems like he didn't even know he was in a trash can."

The voices in my head started again, but... they weren't the same as always, this time they were talking to each other or so I thought. When I tried to open my eyes, they started to burn from the bright light of a computer screen, the rest was dark. This wasn't the garbage can. Where am I? Again a cannibal kidnapped me? It must be the most logical thing, the troops would have locked me in a cell. I sat on the bed still without opening my eyes, the crustings, my headache and the light did not allow it.

"Shit..." I complained while taking my head. "Hey man, I don't have a good taste, better eat a rat or something..." I yawned and cleaned my eyes to open them. I didn't see anyone, maybe the guy went out looking for something, who knows how long I've been raving.

I stood up and started looking through his things. I knew I couldn't find food, but maybe a bottle of vodka would brighten my day. After only finding garbage, I realized that I was not the only one here, he also lived with a woman, he must be a fucking diva, or a whore, but why would he have so many clothes and costumes? The place did not appear to be large. I saw a curtain and opened it, I wasn't alone after all, there was someone under the covers of a cot, it was a very small figure, it was a child. Damn, I couldn't kill him or even think about stealing something valuable, this boy's parents may need it more than a miserable guy like me. The hell, it's not my fault, his stupid parents were the ones who brought me and left me lying here without a protection for their... helpless... child... innocent of what they do... shit.

I moved away from the boy, the things they had weren't so good and they didn't have something that could distract me from this shitty life. The worst part is that it's my fault, I couldn't stop this, I wasn't fast enough.

FLASH BACK

Hope is the last thing you lose. I can't let that egg with legs win, this world belongs to everyone and they have the resistance to save them, they count on ME to save them. Knuckles's plan was simple, but it would do. They were fighting copies of Infinite and Eggman while I was going for the big shots. Taking the rookie would be a mistake.

Once I was inside, my legs stopped running, they froze, and my head looked up at the sky. The sun had appeared above us, it is not possible that something like this happened without anyone getting hurt, it is obviously the work of the phantom ruby. But I couldn't help but feel fear, even if it was an illusion, it doesn't take away its destructive power, a single blow and all of us will disappear. How lucky that nobody is here, I don't want them to see the fear I feel... what am I talking about? I am Sonic The Hedgehog, a brave adventurer and hero. Nothing ever stopped me and they will be no exception.

I resumed my way, reaching a long bridge, surely that leads me to Eggman.

"You never give up, do you, blue rat?"

Infinite was coming down holding his mask, he really needs to adjust that thing.

"No, the truth is that I like to bother you, it's part of being a hero." I winked, laughing slightly. "I thought you would be busy with my friends, I doubt your illusions will last long."

"Please, you underestimate my abilities, hedgehog. But I'm not here to fight, I understand that your tiny mind only serves to fix everything to blows. I, on the other hand, have a deal to offer you."

"I don't want anything that comes from you."

"Oh, believe me, you want it."

He moved his hand in a slow gesture, making a large red cube appear and inside it seemed to be someone. Then the image became clearer, it was Shadow, hitting and kicking the cube walls with force. He seemed to be screaming but couldn't hear him.

"Yes, nice try, tinny face. But Shadow is fighting with us."

"That is just one more of my illusions, this is the true Shadow. Do you want him back? Then give up, get on your knees before me and the rest of your annoying friends, show the world that there is no hope." The ruby shone again and the cube disappeared with its prisoner inside. "Or you can continue with this fight, lose your friends and the love of your life."

Hearing him is martyrdom, he doesn't seem to mind killing everyone in a second. He has no feelings, it is not normal and if what he says is true then Shadow will be in the hands of that madjackal, my friends will die and the planet will be partially destroyed. Even if I attack now it would mean condemning everyone if I don't stop him, but... I can't, I just can't.

"Mr Sonic!" Gadget jumped from a tower, swinging with his hook towards Infinite, managing to kick him in the rib although that did not seem to have any effect because he took it from his leg and threw it. I ran to save him and he held onto me when I had him in my arms. "I-I'm sorry, I should try something."

"You did well, pal." I lowered him quickly, now we were two against him, now there is an chance to beat him.

"It seems you leave me no choice but to kill your annoying friends."

"Let's do it, rookie." I ordered.

When Infinite raised her arm I ran to him. He made cannons appear, I was able to dodge the bullets with ease but Gadget did not. I stopped when I heard him call me, I realized that Infinite was not aiming at me at first, if he could be fast before to be able to lock me in, he could have done it now with those cannons. His true target was Gadget. He looked at me, like he was waiting for me to save him. I stopped and saw how the bullet had pierced him and his body fell onto the ground. Blood was running around him. I couldn't stop watching him. I approached with slow steps, his gaze was lost, he had no life, he was dead now and worst of all, that look of terror and despair did not disappear.

Suddenly I just heard laughter. Infinite scoffed, it gave him pleasure to see Gaget dead.

"So you want Shadow to end up just like that boy?

I froze again, his threats were true. I wasn't fast enough to save the rookie, will I be to save the rest? This terrified me, I was insecure and frustrated, but I had to make a decision.

"And well?"

"... How do I know you won't hurt them?

"Oh, don't worry. I won't kill them and I'll free Shadow, I'm sure you'll hear from him soon." He seemed to smile under the mask.

"Make them believe I'm dead, I will never kneel but I can disappear..."

"I don't think I can accept that, how do I not know you were trying something?"

"Believe me, if you have my friends' and Shadow's lives in your hands, I won't do anything to harm them..."

"Deal."

He held out his hand and I went to shake it, then I just ran away from all this chaos, leaving behind my dignity, my honor, my friends, my love...

END OF THE FLASH BACK

After a while I knew that everything went well for Infinite, I heard that everyone believed that I died under the rubble of the tower and that was it. Goodbye Sonic The Hedhehog, I had to adapt to the horrible name of Maurice. Only Maurice, a nobody, drug addict, alcoholic, tramp ... he had to keep a low profile so being the scum of society was perfect, after all I was, an idiot who could not save them all, could not be called hero but I could never know if they were safe, they did not talk much about the resistance and I do not walk in the cities because they could discover me as the last time, too bad I had to kill a couple of subjects, but if they were not they would be my friends... friends that I will never see again...

The cot creaked, he had woken up and I could only think of hiding, I got into the woman's clothes, to observe him.

"Maya, is that you?" She was not a boy, she is a girl but... why is her voice so familiar to me? "Bill?" She called again, it seems that they are not his parents, why would a son call them by their names?

After a few minutes I came out of my hiding place, I couldn't recognize the girl's voice, I think it was just a simple coincidence that she sounded like my little friend. I decided to get out of there as soon as possible not without taking something, I kept all the bottles of alcohol and some other object that seemed of value to pawn it. I could earn some money, for food, water or drugs.

"W-Who's here?" This time she did stand up, walked slowly towards me, sure of the noises I was making.

"If you stay where you are I won't hurt you, girl." I spoke to her while I kept more things among an old backpack that I found. Hearing no more of her footsteps I assumed she heeded my warning, kept on keeping what I could when I felt a pain in my back. The damn girl had thrown something at me.

"S-Stop now!" She tossed me another book again, which fell on my head making me groan.

"Arg! Shit!" I yelled annoyed and turned quickly to hold the little girl by the ears. "Didn't you hear what I said?! Stupid -! ... C-Cream?" I released her immediately and she backed away scared although after seeing me better she opened her eyes in surprise, it seems that now she does recognize me.

"Mister Sonic? What happened to you?" She approached me, slowly, although she did not seem very sure to continue doing it.

"N-No, you confuse me with someone" I turned, covering my face and quickly taking the backpack to try to open the gate.

"Wait!" She took my arm hard, looking at me with tears in her eyes. "Y-You are Sonic, aren't you?"

I didn't know what to answer, I looked everywhere for some other way out without having to harm her in my attempt to flee from this problem, she may already be small and be my friend... in fact, she is the only one I could find now . Anyway, if I couldn't run away then I had to answer but before saying anything she hugged me tightly, starting to cry and all I did was stroke her head, trying to comfort her, if she is here without her mother it's because there must be a pitiful reason.

"Sonic is dead, Cream, and so it must be for the good of all. I am Maurice and I'm not supposed to be here" I separated her from me, wiping the tears that fall down her little cheeks. "and you cannot tell nobody you saw me. "

"B-But I don't understand, if you are here you can help us. Everything is horrible, we are scared. Amy and Tails-"

"Wait, do you know where they are?"

"Here, they took care of me, they had to use other identities, Maya and Bill are just a mask they wear to get out. But how did y gouet in here? They just said they would go out for a while to bring someone."

Amy and Tails, did they bring me here? everything is confusing, if they know that I am alive they will be in danger, will they be upset? No, if it were like that, they wouldn't have brought me here, so... w-would they forgive me for what I did? I was happy, I could see them again, but at what cost?

"Sure they brought me... Cream, I can't stay here, you'll be safer if I go and they shouldn't be alone, go with Knuckles and the others-"

"They're not here!"

"What do you mean they're not there? What about Silver, the Chaotix… w-what about Shadow?"

"Infinite has them... when you left they started hunting us, the resistance dissolved and some left and betrayed us. Many say they are tortured or dead..."

"BUT HE SAID HE WOULD LEAVE THEM IN PEACE" I couldn't help but burst, I screamed furiously scaring her. "I went to save them! I went through a bloody hell so this wouldn't happen to them, so he would free Shadow and for what?" I sat down, starting to cry with sadness, anger, frustration. "all of you pay because of me..."

Cream approached me, hugged me trying to comfort me, she did not know what to do and neither did I ...
