Chapter 1: Unplanned Date

It’s been a couple days since I last heard news of our test results, but I haven’t been worrying about it too much. What I have been worrying about is Cassie’s offer to go with her to join the Last Resort. I mean, I really like the idea… but Jess and Sif are still dead set going string to the frontier, and we are a team. But at the same time… me and Cassie have become… close since the test. I mean, I don’t wanna admit anything… but ya know what I mean.
Regardless, I got changed in my quarters and started making my way down to the mess hall. I was walking relatively slower than normal, lost it thought… thinking about how nice it would be standing with my squad on the front atop a burning werch of IMC forces. Then a new image… one of me and Cassie, standing on top of a Harvester, looking down upon the battlefield… dozens of other Last Resort pilots and Titans basking in the setting sun, wrecks of IMC forces laying in our wake. And as we were cheering our friends on, Cassie turned to face me... and kissed me.
Perfectly timed, I ran into a wall and stumbled back in my daydreaming. A couple passing rookies chuckled at me as the passed. But I leaned against the same wall, holding my forehead and thinking back on that same scene.
“Daydreaming are we?” I heard a voice off to my right. I turned in the direction and there was Cassie in her full Pilot gear, minus the helmet.
“Agh! Cassie…! Hey! Er… how’s it going?” I jumped, casting away the postcard worthy scene out of my head.
“I’m alright, just came from the gym, how about you?” Cassie replied.
“Oh… yeah… I’m fine… just woke up, actually. Er… just about to head down to the mess hall…” I trailed off, getting lost in Cassie baby blue eye. (Only one eye cause well… her other eye is cybernetic…)
“Oh, how perfect, I was just about to head up there myself. Care to join me?” Cassie asked.
“Well.. if you insist.” I replied, doing my best to hide my blush.
“Awesome, it get’s boring eating alone, eh?” Cassie giggled.
“Oh yeah… you… you said it!” I chuckled halfheartedly. Cassie nodded and me both made our ways down to the mess hall. As we got our food and sat down, I tried to think of something to say.
“At least the food is somewhat decent here.” Cassie commented, looking down at her soup.
“Yeah… true that. Hey, you said it got boring around here… don’t you have some kinda squad or something?” I asked.
“Oh… er… well… not really. In the Last Resort, Davis and Droz hires as many pilots as they can, and sort them into teams. Of course, people can form their own defensive crew, but most of the time the teams are randomly generated. After one Harvester makes it undamaged, we all kinda go our separate ways in search of a new one.” Cassie explained… “That’s why I asked you to come with me. I want someone I can trust watching my back.” Cassie added. And suddenly, she placed a hand on mine, and my mind froze.
“Re… really? Wow… ugh…” I shook my head to get over the shock. “What about pilot training? You must of had a squad there.” I asked. Cassie noticed what she was doing and pulled her hand away, I swear I could see a slight blush on her face.
“Oh, I did… but they all wanted to go to the front, where all the intense action was going down. And ever since I lost my sister… I wanted something a little more calming. Working for Davis and Droz is no super easy cake walk, but it fits my style.” Cassie replied.
“God, I know the feeling. Jessica and Sif are dead set on going to the Frontier, I’m not so sure yet...” I trailed off again.
“That’s why you should come with me! We would do awesome together! Ugh… only if you wanted too.” Cassie looked a little shocked for a minute, like what she said did not come out right.
“You know what, I might actually go with you.” I concluded, Cassie’s face lit up.
   “Really?” She asked.
“Yeah, why not? Being with you sounds like fun… er… I mean… going out there sounds like fun… but also being with you is not a bad thing!” I looked around awkwardly. Cassie giggled lightly and moved her hand closer to mine again.
“I have a feeling you have… stronger feelings, don’t you?” Cassie whispered.
“What… what do you mean by that?” I asked, trying to hide it.
“You… have feelings for me, don’t you?” Cassie offered… I sighed.
“Yeah, I guess there is no real point in hiding it. Ever since we completed the test… I have been… attracted to you.” I explained. Cassie giggled again.
“Don’t worry, I’m actually flattered, to be honest.” She smiled.
“Really? You like some rookie?” I smirked.
“Jet… you're not just some rookie, you have some real potential, you know? You may not see it, but others do… and so do I. And… I’ve also been thinking about spending more time with you, if you know what I mean.” Cassie explained.
“Well, I guess this just became a date then…” I concluded.
“I guess it has.” Cassie agreed, taking my hand again.

Chapter 2: Everyone Has a Choice

“Well, well, well. Are we interrupting something?” Sif and Jessica walked up to the table and sat down. Cassie sighed and I rolled my eyes.
“Really guys?” Cassie gave Sif a look.
“Oh, so we are interrupting something.” Sir smirked.
“Maybe we should leave them…” Jessica commented.
“Well, while you're here… I’ve decided to go with Cassie to join the Last resort.” I explained.
   “What?” Sif asked.
“You were… serious about that?” Jessica sat back down.
“Yes, I was. You guys said it would be a cool idea anyway.” I replied.
“But…” Jessica started, but Cassie cut her off.
“Hey, everyone has a choice you know. You can’t force him to go to the front with you.” Cassie noted.
“We are a team Jet, you can’t just abandon us!” Sif shouted.
“Oh yeah? A real team would support my decision, instead of forcing me to change.” I grunted, standing up.
“Fine! Have it your way!” Sif pushed me and stormed out. I stumbled back, but Jessica caught me before I fell.
“Well, I for one still support you, just a little shocked you were legit about it. However, I still wanna go to the front, but I’m not gonna hold you against following what you're heart wants.” Jessica explained.
   “Thanks Jess….” I sighed.
“Just give Sif time, you know how he is.” Jessica smiled.
   “Right…” I turned to Cassie.
“Everyone has a choice, Jet. He made his.” Cassie shrugged.
“I’ll ah… leave you two alone.” Jessica mumbled and walked out of the mess hall. Cassie and I spent another half an hour explaining the game plan for after I graduate Pilot School… if I graduate at all.
“Oh come on, we did awesome! There's no way you won't pass!” Cassie reassured me. I was about to say something, but the PA system was activated.
“Can all Pilot trainees who took the final test a couple days ago please report to the command center.” The voice crackled.
“You should probably get going.” Cassie winked at me. We both stood up and walked over to the door.
“Well, wish me luck.” I turned to face her. Cassie smiled… leaned in, and kissed me. It seemed to last forever, but when she finally pulled away, I felt my face go bright red.
“How’s that for good luck?” Cassie giggled.
“Yeah… that will work…” I shook my head. Cassie giggled again and we went our separate ways, and I went straight for the command center.

Chapter 3: Let The Celebration Begin

As I walked into the command center, I was greeted with cheering and clapping. There was the other pilots who also took the test all crowded around the facility commander.
“Huh, does that mean I pass?” I chuckled. Laughter could be heard as the clapping and cheering died down.
“Why, of course. This is only for those who did pass.” Andrew smiled.
“Yeah, you four really knocked some heads down there when you did the test!” Davis commented, Jessica and Sif walked up behind me.
“Yeah but… this is only three of us. Yeah Cassie is already a full pilot, but she deserves credit for helping us.” I explained. Cassie then walked out from behind Davis and Droz, a huge smile on her face.
“Don’t worry, no way I’m being left out of this!” Cassie giggled.
“Anyway, the ceremony will begin this afternoon. It’s not a super long ceremony, but after today, you have a week to choose where you are going.” Andrew explained.
“I already know where I’m going.” I winked at Cassie, who blushed a bit.
“You're gonna be a great addition to the Last Resort, kid.” Davis commented.
“Yeah, we are gonna be lucky to have someone like you.” Droz chimed in.
“But that being said, you all should should head back to your rooms to prepare for the ceremony.” Andrew dismissed us.
“Still salty about my choice?” I walked past Sif.
“As much as I disagree with it, I can’t stop you from going where you want.” Sif rolled his eyes.
“At least you respect that.” I shrugged, and broke into a sprint down to my room.
After I got myself in order, I waned back to the simulation room, this time in my Pilot training gear. And this time, the sim room was set up a little… different. First off, there was this massive stage at the far end of the room, with dozens of chairs lines up in front of it… more like hundreds, but you get the picture. As I got closer, I could see the rest of my squad and a couple others from different Pilot classes. Davis, Droz, and Andrew were also there. Most importantly, Cassie was standing on the stage. As I walked up, I joined my squad and Cassie gave me a wink.
“Hey… sorry I’m late!” I caught my breath.
“You're not late, we were about to start.” Andrew replied, then turned to face the crowd. “Ladies and gentlemen, Pilots, grunts, trainees, we are gathered here to celebrate the graduation of three training groups. Foxtrot, Tango, and Menece. These groups have been fighting by eachother's side for god knows how long, and they have managed to survive though their skills and determination. And now, we take the time to acknowledge the time they took to get to where they are now.” The crowd burst into cheering. Andrew let it go for about a minute, but soon called for silence. “And now, we shall get to the main part of the ceremony. Squads, line up and await the medals.” Andrew turned to face the graduates. We all fored lines within our squads and waited. As Foxtrot and Tango were getting their medals, I noticed Cassie was not with me… until she, Andrew, Davis, walked in front of my squad. I noticed they were all holding medals, but I kept facing forward, as required in this ceremony.
“For your bravery in battle, and you're fearlessness to run head strong into battle to protect your friends, I percent to you the Pilot’s Medal of Graduation.” Davis explained as he put the medal he was holding around Sif’s neck, who saluted in return. They could work on their naming skills for the medals… to be honest.
“For honoring you're fallen squad member by never giving up the fight, I present to you the Pilot’s Medal of Graduation, may we never forget his sacrifice.” Andrew gave Jessica her medal, who bowed in return. Next, Cassie walked up to me, holding what I can assume is my medal. I had to keep facing forward because super important ceremony en’ all, but I couldn't help a smile growing on my face.
“For showing great skill not only in training, but also in the battle of Hossin many years ago… I percent to you the Pilot’s Medal of Graduation. You were the model rookie in this entire facility for a while now, and I’m glad I had the honor to fight beside you all those years ago. Wear this pride, Pilot.” Cassie smiled as she put the medal around my neck, then kissed my cheek. After all that was done, I finally relaxed my shoulder and my back.
“Ugh… finally… no offence, but standing that still really puts strain on one’s back.” I stretched. Cassie and the others on stage laughed, and there were also some chuckles from the crowd.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Future Pilots of today!” Andrew shouted, causing the crowd to roar and clap. Then, we had celebrations go on through the night. Finally, so many years of dreaming and training has lead to this moment.

Chapter 4: The Paths Shall Split

I woke up in a different room than my normal quarters, but then again, not like there is much difference between them. I looked around and noticed I was is Cassie’s quarters, with her laying beside me in bed. I can’t remember exactly what happened, we did party kinda hard last night. But if any of those old romantic drama shows taught me anything, is that Cassie took me back here for some… well, you could take a guess for what we did. Regardless, I sat up, apparently waking Cassie up in the progress.
“Ugggh… what time is it?” Cassie mumbled, wiping her eyes, holding the blanket against her chest.
   “I think… a few minutes past noon…” I replied, also tired myself.
“Man, that was quite the party last night, eh?” Cassie giggled.
“No kidding… who knew the graduation celebration would turn into this.” I laughed.
“Well, I guess now that makes you a full pilot, are you still okay with coming to the Last Resort with me?” Cassie asked, now getting up and dressed.
“Of course, there is no other place, or person I’d rather be with.” I replied, doing the same. After we were both in our normal gear, Cassie smiled.
“Good, Davis and Droz are gonna be staying until later this evening, so we got some time to ourselves.” She explained.
“Never thought I’d hear those words…” I admitted.
“Well, what do you wanna do until then?” Cassie asked.
“Honestly, I would rather go back to sleep, but maybe one last walk around the base wouldn't hurt, say my goodbyes, that kinda thing.” I replied.
“Cool, the sim room should be open again today, maybe we could get some last minute practice in before shipping out.” Cassie offered.
   “Yeah, good idea.” I nodded.
“Let’s get going, then.” Cassie and I made our way outside the main building. We went around to all of my old instructors to bid my last farewell, it was nice talking to them again, but the one I really wanted to see was Mac. He took me under his wing and gave me one on one training, everything I know is from him. Mac was the one who helped shape me into the Pilot I am, so he deserves some thanks. We found him in the Titan Bay, looking over repairs to his Legion.
“Ah, Jet. I wondering if I was gonna see you again before you left. Well, I saw your ceremony, but you know what I mean.” Mac smiled and turned around, he gave a nod to Cassie after she walked up behind me.
“Hey Mac, I just wanted to personally thank you for all the years of training. I know, I know, you're just doing your job, but everything I know came from you.” I explained. Mac chuckled, and gave em a pat on the back.
“Don’t worry kid, I understand. It was a pleasure training you all these years. You're gonna do great out there.” Mac replied.
“With Cassie by my side, there's nothing that will stand in our way.” I could almost feel Cassie rolling her eyes behind me.
“Oh, stop it you!” Cassie giggled, lightly shoving my back. With that, I extended my hand to Mac, who accepted it in a handshake.
“See ya on the other side, buddy.” I gave Mac a nod.
“You know it!” Mac winked. On that happy note, me and Cassie walked back outside and made our way down to the Sim Room. Looks like some of the Trainees were just finishing their run as we entered. Andrew was on watch this time, as Davis and Droz were taking a break. Me and Cassie were allowed a couple rounds that lead us well into the Afternoon. Of course, we crushed the practice rounds Andrew had set up.
After we finished, we walked outside to see two dropships land in the center courtyard. Davis and Droz were their to meet them, along with the other polit graduates.
“What’s this all about?” I asked Davis.
“Ah, this is the first round of Dropships. One of them is for the Last Resort, the other one is for the Militia themselves.” Davis answered.
“Pretty much, those graduates who made up their mind can jump on a Dropship to start their careers.” Droz added as Sif and Jessica joined the group.
“Oh cool, so we could go right to the front from here?” Jessica asked.
“Pretty much.” Davis concluded. I turned to face my former squadmates.
“This is it huh?” I remarked…
“Yeah, I went ahead to pack my stuff already.” Siff replied, walking into the Militia's Dropship. “See ya on the other side, pal.” Sif added as he disappeared inside. Just like that… no handshake, no pat on the back… just gone. Jessica noticed the look on my face and placed a hand on my shoulder.
“Don;t take it personally… people change…” Jessica looked me in the eyes.
“Yeah, right… you should go, don’t wanna be late.” I replied, turning towards the main building. Jessica sighed and filed into the Dropship, followed by a mod of the other graduates. An hour later, I had all my stuff packed and I returned to the Dropship. I walked inside and it was only myself, Cassie, Davis, Droz, and a couple other pilots that came with the ship itself.
“Wow… a lot less than I expected.” I commented, sitting next to Cassie.
“Yeah, this ain’t a very popular business.” One of the Pilots replied.
“Regardless, we still have a job to do. Everyone ready?” Drox looked around, we all nodded, Droz said something to the Pilot of the Dropship and we started leaving the planet.
After we got outside the planet’s atmosphere, I looked out the side window, watching the massive green and blue ball shrink ever smaller… reminds me of Earth, but I heard that planet was one of the first casualties of the war. I turned my head to the front of the ship, and outside the cockpit window, I saw a massive space cruiser.
“What is that!?” I asked in amazement.
“That would be the Last Resort’s mobile homebase.” Davis replied as we got ever closer to it. I guess if you go from planet to planet deploying Harvesters all over the place, you need something more… mobile for a staging base. But as we approached it, I felt a rush of emotions… excitement, honor, and also… nervousness… what does the future hold for me and Cassie? Huh… only one way to find out, eh?
