Father Paul Hertzbrun, who serves as a kaplan (chaplain) in the Heer, providing religious services to enlisted men during wartime. Wehrmacht chaplains were distinguished by purple trim on their uniforms, a cross on their hat (between the wreath and eagle), lack of shoulder decorations, and armbands depicting the Red Cross, similar to medics. They also sometimes wore crucifixes or crosses on necklaces, and when performing services would wear purple priest's mantles. Hertzbrun is named for Hauptmann Hertzbrun, a German officer played by James Whitmore who posed as a Dutch Catholic priest to hide from American soldiers in The Cassock, an episode of the acclaimed World War II TV series Combat! My Hertzbrun is a real priest, a gentle soul who is attached to Messler's unit and is averse to violence, but feels he must be present in the war to provide spiritual guidance to the soldiers.
