There needs to be more options...

Hello everyone, welcome to my Journal, where I like to just go on and on and on and on about various things I know a bit more about. This time, let's discuss InkBunny's rating system a little

I do like how the rating system is, but it is missing a few things that would make things a lot better, in my opinion. They have General, which is exactly as it is, no problem there. Buuuut....then you get "Mature", where there is nudity that is nonsexual, or there is a little bit of violence. But if you take a look at the next option, it spikes to more explicit things with no in between option....Here's what I'm trying to say...

I think there needs to be more options underneath the "Mature" rating, because the "Adult" rating descriptions feel like a rather quick jump from one to the other. The spike feels as though there is no option for maybe, "Suggestive Dialogue" or "Questionable speech" or any of that.

Here is how I discovered this being an issue....I have just uploaded a picture of Aurora saying something about being sus. I knew this wouldn't quite be around the General mark, but I also didn't see it as an actual full-on adult rated thing either. HOWEVER, the listings of ratings seemed to have "Mature" as simply just nudity or mild violence, but then adult says "Sexually Explicit content". Where the heck would "suggestive dialogue" go then? She's not naked, she is not really posing too provocatively either, and she is still fully clothed. The only thing i can see being an issue is what she is saying. I can say that yes, it kind of enters suggestive territory, but does it really seem like it's as extreme as the "Adult" option suggests?

I'm just saying there needs to be either more options on the rating system, or at least more clear descriptions on what is what, because suggestive dialogue, while the character is NOT nude, or NOT posing provocatively, and not exposing her parts, just doesn't cover it the same way as I believe it should.

I just want to ask that then Inkbunny staff or site developers please make the rating system a bit more clear on multiple things, because there are situations like my own where it is simply mildly suggestive dialogue, and not something I would consider explicit enough to warrant a full Adult rating.

Anyone agree with me here?

Suggestive dialogue would fit well in mature, though if you think the language is especially graphic, adult would fit. There's nothing wrong with rating something higher than what it technically has to be. Tags are a good way to indicate such nuance as well.

As to your most recent pic, it's definitely fine for general. And if you want to hide things away from passerbys, there's always the option to hide submissions from guests, or the even more restrictive friends-only.

Now just from my personal viewpoint:
It might be nice to be a little more nuanced, but if we had say, a sliding scale, no one would ever agree what a 4 vs 5 was, and I think a bunch of checkboxes in a line would get confusing and clutter the submission interface. Whereas what we have covers most bases fairly well without causing confusion.

Ah, that does make sense. Yeah, I just don't want to make a mistake that'll get Inkbunny mad at me, when it comes to the ratings. I see your point, though, and yeah, I understand. Thank you for your response, I appreciate it.

Don't worry, I don't think anyone's going to got mad. We try to be a little more restrained than certain other sites. 😸

That sounds like general to me. The rating is more about immediacy. Like if you had the same picture but you put a dildo on the side it would be adult because of sexual themes.

I actually wrote the framework for some uploading software similar to PostyBirb that I never finished (it was called Metapix, the domain might be familiar) and determining the right rating scales for each site was quite tricky because everyone had their own take on it and one (Side7, IIRC) had six separate scales for different topics.

We used to have a Radioactive rating here for cub etc. but decided to just cut it in favour of keyword blocking, and I'd advise the same here, use appropriate keywords and let people block those if desired.

Yeah, one of the things I REALLY like about InkBunny, is that tag blocking system. I really do appreciate your response, and I'm sorry if my journal caused any problems for anyone. Thanks.

No problems, just happened to get seen and felt like commenting.

And no one should be getting mad as long as you learn from mistakes and follow the rules to the best of your understanding.
