It may be the case that they had good intentions and then ran into legal trouble.
Beebz

They state that the content is legal in Finland, but in Estonia its illegal and then that it is grey area in Sweden (Which, according to a friend, it actually is black/white banned, and thats why inkbunny has our no human rule, someone feel free to correct me on this though) Which brings to mind a few thing. 1. Why is your website that categorized itself from the getgo as even having a NSFL (Not Safe For Life) category spread across so many different nations? 2. They were repeatedly and directly asked by people, including some of my friends what the limits were.

What we actually think is happening is that with buzzly's implosion and an attempt at a twitter exodus, Itaku is, like Patreon, turning its back on those who helped build it in the first place. As of the past few months antific people had started joining as well as people with a large audience.

Everything expands into mediocrity. A site becomes popular and inevitably they decide to sell out. Unfortunately the only solution for the time being seems to be to continually move on, or to find a place that will never be popular
DodisBoy

What do you mind by "black/white banned"?

Speaking of concerns like that, I find it strange that no company has yet thought to launch servers into orbit, or to put them on a ship in international waters and bounce the signal off a satellite. That would sidestep problems like national regulations handily.

Balmung

It wouldn't work.

Whoever manages that and supplies it with an internet connection will have authorities on Earth to deal with. Without that, you'd only manage to give service to a dozen ham radio enthusiasts.

"We never advertised as that"

Well that was a flat-out lie.
Beebz

It's r/technicallythetruth They didnt really market at all. They just used our community to do it for them but it was based off of things they were telling us about how the site worked when we asked. Scummy. The point is we advocated for it because of the freefic policy

Woo, chased off another site. I've seen this happen so much I can't even find the energy to get mad about it anymore. I just hope IB never goes that route.
RubisDrake
1 year, 11 months ago
There's no reason I can see why Inkbunny would ever go that route.

But decentralized, open source platforms will help empower humanity more and more, anyway.

I'm starting to get kind of against centralization of services anyway. People need to be able to start their own communities easily and effectively, which is why I wish more furries would use Revolt (once it gets there) and Matrix, and get off of Telegram and Discord.

Err..unless you changed already.
Aogami

I use it semi-infrequently. 4 image at a time uploads and no gallery feature make it difficult
RubisDrake
1 year, 11 months ago
I know that https://lewd.host/ hasn't taken down my files yet. That's what I use, but you'll have to upload everything in a ZIP if you're talking about a comic. 512MB file size limit is friendly, but not for everyone. I would have said for bigger files use FileDitch but... I feel like their Website has not been working great for me all the time. :(

If you've given up, and you want to do something self-hosted. Try Piwigo - https://piwigo.org/

Apparently, this is another option too for something lighter - https://nanogallery2.nanostudio.org/

Doesn't appear to be updated in a year. Still, it's lighter at least. It can be installed with npm (Node.js package manager).
Beebz

Mostly I'm embarrassed because I was advocating so highly for them since the community I was in discovered them before they even hit 5000 users, and now they are at at least 15000 users, more than that. I know this because someone was doing a self challenge to follow every user on itaku and thats how far they got before they gave up.

Man I've been gathering the archive links and keeping people up to date for like 2 hours. =w=;;

The most offensive part of this to me is that they claim they never used freefic or freedom of expression ideas to promote their platform. Which is a flat out lie. The community I'm in joined the site starting December 2021 and everyone was so excited. In the itaku discord itself, staff were repeatedly asked if shota/loli/cub were allowed and they were told your usual fare of "as long as its fictional and not realistic 3d its fine" All of the chats in their entire discord have been wiped as of April 2022 to obfuscate this.
Aogami
1 year, 11 months ago
oh I didn't even know that itaku's own discord had staff telling people that it was okay lmao. That's even worse. What a bunch of assholes.

Aogami
1 year, 11 months ago
I'm salty about Elon Musk buying twitter too. But if you're going to make a website to compete with a massive platform like twitter you have two options:
1 - offer something twitter doesn't or
2 - accept that your users are going to be the people that twitter doesn't want/kicked out.

If you are going to make a site with a worse UI than twitter (somehow), less than 1% of the reach, AND your rules about what's allowed on the site are essentially the same as twitter's you can't really get mad when it stays empty.
SenGrisane

cynicalillusion
1 year, 11 months ago
And here I was considering joining.  Full well glad I didn't now.

Like I get it, being harassed over your content isn't nice, it really isn't.  But if you're gonna claim to use one country's laws for your site's domain while invoking the laws of the place you *actually* live in as the reason you are disregarding them, than why even bother making the site in the first place?  Should of banned the content in the first place, or hell make them tagged in the blacklist by default, and removing it comes with a popup telling the user they've only themselves to blame if they don't like what they see and that precautions regarding their eyes were indeed made.
apdamien

I think you could put your shota/loli artwork on lolicit.org.

I have also sent an email to support at the host of my personal website. If they allow it, I will be happy to create a directory for you to upload to.

NOTE: I am in my mid-70s and this offer is good only during my lifetime: after I die there will be nobody to pay the annual renewal.
apdamien
1 year, 11 months ago
My webhost replied: no sexually explicit depictions of children allowed, not even drawings. Oh well.

There's still lolicit, although you might not like the appearance of their pages. I posted my stories, "Whatever Rhonda Wants" and "Whatever Russell Wants" there. Didn't get much response, but no problems either.

Come to think of it, I should also post the covers you drew for those two stories there.

Yeah, I decided based on this that i won't be using itaku anymore. I don't have confidence that they won't do the same thing to more and more content. That's what happened to Buzzly until it imploded, And many other [formerly]new art sites. I made an account earlier in the year, and I made sure to read the rules to double check at that time of what content it didn't allow. Don't want to go through the same thing over and over again with new sites. They need super clear rules on content they aren't allowing from the start, and need to make a very apparent notice about any rule changes that can reach all users on the site when they do make changes like this.
Aogami
1 year, 11 months ago
there is really no point to using it. It essentially has the same upload policy as twitter with less reach.
billmurray
1 year, 11 months ago
I've made it a personal policy that any sites which aren't already well-known aren't gonna have me hopping over or doing any free advertising with em unless new users are able to actually have a working relationship with the admins (ie:  they're approachable and you can talk to them), otherwise the second some ken or karen gets involved you have a good chance of them turning into jerks and throwing people under the bus the first sign someone's gonna cause trouble  @w@

In any case!! Nothing wrong with inkbunny when it comes to submitting art, if ya ask me!!
Beebz
1 year, 11 months ago
I think that was what was so devastating about this because the moderators and admin joined our community and many of us were able to talk directly to them in a candid manner ;w;
caramelapples
1 year, 11 months ago
I find it very stupid considering they seem to have a working blacklist system so the offended could just block and move on.
Ausodra
1 year, 11 months ago
It's been my experience that with the offended, the mere fact that the content is allowed on the site at all is what offends them.  That they don't have to look at it is irrelevant to them.
Ausodra
1 year, 11 months ago
I hadn't even heard of this site until now.  And now I know to avoid it like the Plague.

Also, "we never advertised it like that" screams "scam."  Reminds me of a "traditional publisher" I entrusted with a novel years ago, advertised out the yin-yang about how great it was but then in the contract it said that by signing, you agree that nothing represented anywhere except in that contract was ever promised to you - and that included their own website that made all those promises in the first place!

Also, that Roht dude has some serious gall, accusing you of "gaslighting" when you have the evidence right there to back your claims up and prove him wrong.  There's very little in this world that I hate more than a fucking badmin.
Mousarchy
1 year, 11 months ago
they are basically pulling a goverment spy treatment.
you have someone "not part of the company" do all the work (the modarators who are only suppose to add NSFW tags and nothing else) and then when it gets spotted you pull the "we arnt associated with them"
In the end, even if what they say is true ...dosnt  change the fact that they didn't even check there own laws first until after the 'not advertisment'
Aogami
1 year, 11 months ago
I mean I highly doubt it was intentional. It seems like because they were ignorant of the law they made their rules and whoever was going around excited to be a part of the moderation team talking up the site answered questions based on those rules and gave the impression that the site was sholi friendly. The fact that Roht doesn't even know what a fucking loli IS did not help things. But yes in the end they can just disavow. "We never told them to do that, we never told them that was the policy, that is just how they interpreted it. They weren't acting in any official capacity." and that might all be true but the end result is the same. Lots of people got the wrong idea about the site.
Mousarchy
1 year, 11 months ago
ya. dont mean to imply its intentional. but what you said basically summarizes me better.
Drakue
1 year, 11 months ago
To be honest, after reading through their reasoning and how much shit they're having to put up with, I'm entirely with them on this one. They didn't handle it well, but they did what they had to in order to keep the website running; the alternative would have just been closing the entire thing down, which would probably even now be the easier move to make.

You can be for free expression and still be concerned you're going to be arrested, or be forced to dox someone to some government because you're hosting content that you don't even personally like. What are you wanting from these people, exactly? Because whining about this is only going to result in the admins saying "Fuck it, you deal with this" and shutting the entire thing down. If you want to host more content like that, you'd have a better job going to the dark web, where legality barely matters. On the surface web, there are more concerns than just "what do our users think".
Aogami
1 year, 11 months ago
they didn't know the law, wrote their rules and answered questions about the website based on ignorance, then changed it later. That's their biggest problem. Ignorance and incompetence.

I have visited this website before, and looked at their policies in the past.

There was no mention of shota/loli, or anything implying rules against underage drawn content.

I wish they would've made it fucking clear in the rules that the Website does not support that type of content (ToS, upload policies, etc...)

Instead, they forget to fucking mention it until it's too late. They're the ones who are irresponsible here, not you. So don't worry about it. :3
Aogami
1 year, 11 months ago
they've changed their rules twice in a month because apparently they did not even know the laws in their host country (countries??? they named like four which they have to be held account to for some reason). Whatever their reasons, ignorance or malice, it's shitty and I'm angry at them lol
sedkitty
1 year, 11 months ago
I've seen this happen over and over again.

1. (artsite) lets people know that it allows cub/loli/shota art.
2. cub/loli/shota artists and their fans join (artsite), since it's hard to find a site that allows such.
3. as (artsite) gains popularity, it also gains more mainstream artists and fans.
4. once (artsite) hits a critical mass of users, the cub/loli/shota artists are kicked to the curb with no warning.

Piczel and Picarto are two that come immediately to mind.

It is beyond stupid we are this far into the internet era and still struggling to share drawings. I think my phone has more storage and bandwidth than the entire VCL did in the 1990s - yet even with millions of whole-ass desktop computers connected, these sites collapse when one person says boo.

The fundamental problem is that community is not a business model. The only monetary interest for a forum should be minimizing cost. "People show up and talk to each other" will not make money. Any effort to make money from that is treating those people as a resource to be burned.

Meanwhile everything decentralized is either rife with (or explicitly designed for) people who were justifiably banned from social media, and people who are justifiably hiding from law enforcement.

This is why we can't have nice things.
Aogami
1 year, 11 months ago
If you make an alternative to a large platform you have two options:
1 - provide a service the original is lacking, or
2 - be the one that people go to when they're banned from the bigger one.
Itaku isn't 1, and it doesn't want to be 2. It will never get any mainstream traction unless one of those things changes.

F-List and F-Chat's community is pretty bad, IMO.

Shnitadel

You can do the absolute bare minimum and it will pass inspection. And you can censor it with a tool like betterrepack so that people can just decensor the images themselves. It's a small price to pay for otherwise being able to post literally whatever you want (as long as it's art).

Beebz

Ugh, I've daydreamed about this too tbh but THEN you also have to worry about the Internet Service Provider getting bitchy too, which can get you fucked if you're in an area where theres only so many options.
RubisDrake
1 year, 11 months ago
Most people host Web servers on a paid VPS--or other Cloud-thingy or hosting provider--to get around ISP restrictions. Some people even use it as a local VPN tunnel like OpenVPN or Wireguard to get around CG-NAT, or a landlord's router, and then access the internet without being firewalled or filtered in any way.

At least you have more of a choice of who hosts your Website/service than your choice of ISPs, usually.
HighVoltage

I see, he wanted to do an art thing, but the dude wasn't smart enough to know what art was.

If art needs to be banned and rules changed... that's not the artist fault, that's the mod.  When the controversial artist decide to leave, instead of being happy.. they try to save face.

I used to run an art forum.. I know the pressure to seem to be right all the time, but I think you also need to be honest.

The Mod tried to be honest, but they're deluding them self.
