Societies create rituals for many things. Nearly all of them are meant to be ascensions into a new level of society, responsibility, and status. Graduations like this aren't exactly "rituals of manhood/womanhood," but they do represent an acknowledgement of accomplishment. You've studied, learned, and grown; the ritual is a sort of rite of passage, where you are publicly acknowledged to have accomplished a daunting task. Not everyone graduates high school; fewer graduate college, and fewer still get advanced degrees. In each case, the ritual is designed to be a public congratulations.

In some ways, high school graduation is equated with a step into adulthood. Future learning is much less structured -- you have to order your own time for classes, study, etc. Those who go directly into jobs find another type of structure, but not one where you are regimented into classes and taught in specific ways. It's a step out of a recognized pattern of life that you've had for 12 years (give or take). You're expected to take on more responsibility for yourself, your life, and what you do with it.

So yes... butterflies are to be expected. But it's exciting, too. It's a time for you to be proud of what you've done, just as your old woof papa is proud of you. Don't be too worried -- you're going to do just fine. Grab life with both paws and go for it. You do have to live your own life... but you don't ever have to be alone. I'll be here for you. *hugs* Love you lots, boku no koibita kitsune.
