Migrated to Linux

For 15 years I begrudgingly used Microsoft Windows. Well I did like Windows 7 as IMHO it was the most perfect version of Windows Microsoft had ever put out there. But Windows 8 was crap. (I didn't bother upgrading to that) However I did upgrade to windows 10. It was a decent enough and got the job done. But what I didn't enjoy are all the back doors Microsoft has, the tracking, the constant maintenance., and constant worry of getting a virus. I left windows back in the Windows ME days because the computer it was on was nailed by four viruses that turned the PC into a giant paper weight. It was then I bought a new Mac Pro and replaced the dead PC with an older Mac the Mac Pro replaced. I loved how things went from that point on. But Apple got too pricey for me to justify operating under their ecosystem any further, not when I can build a PC that could out perform the Mac Pro I was eyeing up for less than half the price. So I begrudgingly switched back to windows. At that time Windows 7 was out. When windows 8 came out....crap. When windows 10 came out it was better. I upgraded to 10 because it had some aspects about the kernel that were better than 7 even though the GUI was not as good as 7. Fine. Upgrade I did.

The thing that Win 10 pissed me off about was the forced updates. Yes I can turn that off for the most part. But why should I when that feature should be off by default? The other thing that pissed me off was the constant maintenance, and having to bog my system down with anti virus and anti malware tools. I paid good money for building a high performance PC, I want that performance.....every last bit of it. Then there is the whole "Hyper User" aspect Microsoft has on a windows PC. Thing is you are not in control of what a windows PC does. Microsoft ultimately calls the shots. Hell the OS is not even yours. Instead you pay for the privilege of having a special authentication key to use THERE (as in not yours) operating system. They can do things behind your back, they can sniff out your data and what you do on your machine and they can execute things without your consent.

Call me old school. But I grew up in a time that when you bought a computer, it was YOURS. and only YOU and YOU ALONE, gets to decide what the computer does and does not do. With WIndows 10 Microsoft calls the shots. You just have a measly user account where as Microsoft has root access to your machine Ie Hyper User. No that does not fly with me. My computer is fucking MINE. I paid for it. I should have root access to MY computer and make it do what I want. Nobody should ever have an account that outranks the owner of the machine.

The final straw for me was the debacle of the October update where it deleted everything in a users documents and pictures directories. I'm lucky to have a network hard drive where I could back up my stuff to and minimize any damage the update would do to my machine when my turn to receive the update came around. Fortunately Microsoft pulled the update off line and is trying to fix the problem.

But that's not all. Now there is a problem with Windows 10 pro deactivating itself due to a problem with Microsoft's authentication servers.

Now in contrast to this, I watched some YouTube videos of Linux Mint 19 with the Cinnamon Desktop in action which caught my interest. I played around with Linux Mint 13 before. It was enjoyable. But at the time there were not enough tools to meet my needs as an artist. Plus I was getting tired of maintaining a duel boot system. So I went back to windows only. But this time when I did research into the viability of switching to Linux, I found everything I needed to do everything in linux that I could do under windows. So I made a live USB stick of Linux MInt 19 and played around with it. It was love at first sight.

So with all the tools I needed available under linux and loving the hell of the user interface, I decided to take a leap of faith and migrate from Windows 10 to full time Linux. I nuked my Windows 10 installation and replaced it with Mint 19 with the Cinnamon desktop. I still have a few bugs to iron out and I have to unlearn the Windows culture and get the hang of the totally different mindset of the Linux world. Other than these issues, I am so happy with my leap of faith. For the first time in ages I feel that I am in complete control of my computer and that it obeys me and only me. I don't have to worry about malware and viruses as long as I conduct safe internet surfing practices. It is such a liberating feeling that I am in an actual desktop environment designed to be a desktop environment instead of the one size fits all approach of windows 10. Linux Mint gets out of my way and lets me do what I use my computer for. Plus no outside entity outranks me on my own machine. Hell there is not outside entity doing shit behind my back. No tracking. Privacy baby!! No forced updates. No NSA back door either. This copy of the OS on my machine is fucking mine to do with as I see fit. Just like the old days of computing.

So on that note, I bid Microsoft Windows Good Bye. I'm a linux powered chipmunk now baby! WOOOOOHOOOO!!!!!!! Free at last!!!
