Genre classification!

I was wondering just what my stories would classify as, genre wise.

Pondered the subject before, but it wasn't until I saw someone categorize "120 Days of Sodom" by the Marquis' De Sade as "erotic fiction" that I suddenly found myself curious.
Oh, and paralytic with laughter too.

A lot of people haven't ever heard of the "erotic romance" genre before, which you can read about here. That's certainly a part of it, despite the claim that certain themes aren't "accepted" by publishers -- we're talking about literary classification, not concerned with clearly arbitrary rules set up for the sake of political convenience.

Pfft, seriously. "It doesn't count because one of the characters wears a silly hat" makes just as much sense, but hey.

Tai's Story might be the strangest amalgamation of genres I've encountered - at least lately. I always say labels aren't worth the stock we put in them, but this still is an interesting thought exercise.

Coming-of-age erotic-romantic action/drama-thriller?

I don't know. Anyone got any ideas or opinions?

SPOILER! [*shrug* Figured I would since I kind of named a lot of things regarding the story here and who knows who is watching you and still trying to read it]

Honestly, I think you hit it right on the head with your "Coming-of-age erotic-romantic action/drama-thriller" I mean, they are cubs (Coming-of-age). When I think of "Erotic" I think of fetishes (May or may not be true, but that's what I think of), and there is a hint of bondage in one of the chapters. Romantic is a definite between the two. Action? Hell yeah. I mean... The escape from trying to leave the warehouse is great action, plus the escape scene through the mall. Drama is also a definite between the apprehension with Tai and Mike's advances and the death of Tai's mother. And thriller tops it off with always making it's devoted readers eagerly awaiting more and more to come in the next chapters.

I can't really think of too many things other then what you already stated as what could possibly add onto that genre bunch there. Except... Tragedy (Death of the mother and the ending of the most recent chapter) and Fiction (I mean... Unless you live in a world where Furs rule the world. I wish I did... But sadly, I don't). But that would be all that I would add on in terms of that.

That's true, I didn't think about how this discussion could produce spoilers. :S
Bloody hell.

Yeah, I think that's about right. I just find it funny how much stuff is crammed into that story. I'm no expert, but if you look at the actual criteria for being considered, say, a thriller, TS does fit the bill. It's kind of strange.

Regarding erotic-romance though, that's a funny one. Basically, it means any story that is romantic but features explicit sex that is an important part of the story and if removed would damage it (fetishistic or not). The sex is supposed to be part of the plot and character development, with the titillation of the reader secondary to that - which is pretty much what I swear by.

It's actually a common genre of fiction on the internet, but most furries really are just writing "pornography" (erotic literature). I dunno what it is, I've seen some furries PRETEND they were writing something other than straight up shallow porn... but they weren't. Some very big name authors here with very big heads are actually just writing bad pornography with the emotional depth of a spider's piss puddle.

Yeah, thats why I put the random spoiler tag. But hey! You never know when someone is gonna pop in there and say "HEY! I HAVEN'T READ IT YET BISH! THANKS FOR RUINING IT!" So I had to protect myself there

But as Indorri said, the massive genre's that come from this one story is what makes it what it is. I don't think you would have so many followers for this story if it didn't have everything that it currently does have to offer. So when you say that it's strange, I laugh and say "It's amazing!"

Ah, okay... Well then everything about Tai's Story fits that bill. I can't even imagine this story without the sexual aspect of it. I mean... It's what strengthened the bond between the two boys. So it is definitely necessary to this story.

And for the last bit about people writing bad porn... I only hope that I am not doing that with my story. I'm trying to throw several plot elements into it. Maybe my next chapter (After the one I am currently writing. Already almost 4000 words into it and not anywhere near done.) will be clean, just to show that its not all about porn. *shrugs* Maybe. But I don't think it will be the same as your stories.

Hehe! Well, only a handful have read this journal, so I don't expect that to be a problem.

I suppose the mish-mash of genres did help it out a little. I sort of wondered how people would react to such an unusual story - someone once specifically told me "you won't be able to do it" and "good luck" when I vaguely mentioned the direction the story was going to go (of course, this guy wasn't even reading my stories - and was a bit of a dick, but that's another story).

As for your writing, I doubt you'd be producing garbage porn at all. Hell, don't get me wrong, I don't even have a problem with straight-up erotica/porn stories. It's more that a lot of them aren't done very well online, and some of the most popular writers are... well. Yeah.
So if you wanted to, go right on ahead and do full-on porn stories. Heck, I always say: do whatever you want, just try to do your best. Whatever you write, I'll be checking it out and I don't expect it to be mindless pap.

I actually have your gallery open right now, but just a heads up: I'm SERIOUSLY busy and have a back log of stuff to read. I know, and get pissed off by, people just say that sometimes, but in this case it's true. I've got three books from my local library I've had to keep getting out over and over again - had them three months and haven't finished them yet.
Unlike other furry authors, I actually read other authors' stuff. -.-

Well you know my Reaction toward the story. I love every bit of it. It's fun to go back and re-read it too. As with everything such as this (Art, Stories, Movies, Games, etc.), you always find SOMETHING you've missed from the first time it was seen. This story is no different. I've gone back to re-read the entire story JUST to see what I might have missed. And there were a couple of things that I came across. Not sure if I could point any out right at this moment, but some differences nonetheless. So it is definitely a good story. And for the guy... Well, you DID do it, and his wish of good luck was well welcomed, I assume?

As for my writing, I thank you for what you have said already. Reading that after the only thing you have read of mine being the comments I make toward these Journals of yours (As far as I know that is), it really does mean a lot to see you say that you don't think I would produce garbage porn. But I believe some stories, if they have enough depth behind them for the other, NEED to become actual stories instead of just straight-up porn for people to fap to. So I hope that whatever I write does live up to your expectations (IE: NOT Mindless pap)

And I'm also grateful to see you say that you have my gallery open. It means a lot that you are taking the time to read it, even if you are busy at the moment with other things. As I say often, Real life comes first. So feel free to comment on my stories with any criticism that you might have. Good or bad, I'd love to hear it. And like I said... I'm currently working on the next chapter. So keep an eye out for it when you get the chance!

To be honest, the multi-genre spanning storyline is one of the many appealing things about TS. You first read it and you think "porno cub story", then it becomes "coming-of-age friendship story" then "romantic story" then "omg, murder story!" and then "spyish thriller story!" and so on and so forth.

It's so much fun to read through. :3

I really don't know what to say about it.  I know that a label makes some things easier, but others... not so much.  Why would something good need a label?  If you're really looking for a genre for your stories, I don't think they have just one that would fit.  They delve into so many different extremes that it really is hard to classify, so why bother.  Why not just let it be awesome as a "story" or "novel" or whatever YOU want to call it?

Oh, indeed, I agree. But it's just a fun thought-exercise; and the problem is, there are so many furry stories on IB (and elsewhere) that are simple porn stories that giving my own stories a "classification" (aside from, you know, X-rated >:3) might help them stand out for those looking for stories of this type. So it might be useful in the future.

Sorry. I read back over my comment and saw that it was kind of harsh.  But if you're really looking for a genre... maybe "exotic thriller" for Tai's story; drama for Astray; and just Sexyness for SDY.
