Hippos, was always my assumption. Their mouth actually IIRC is present sometimes when you see them looking upwards or when the perspective is from side, but I could be remembering something totally different.

There's an entire story arc of them being mistaken for hippoes, in fact. But yeah, they do have similar snouts.
