There three main components to a witch doctor's craft; the war paint, the masks, and the curses themselves.

The paint is a veil that covers the face in order to give the caster further clarity when peering into the unseen realm of the spirits. Its design also gives the spirits themselves insight into the identity of the caster as most spirits can only see the masks and paint and not the caster. The paint is unique to each individual.

The masks are a 'solidified' form of vague, metaphysical concepts belong to the spirit of the caster. Where the paint can be used by any fledgling witch doctor or shaman, gaining access to the masks is far more difficult.
One must study one's own being, isolate a concept, and then give it form. The name of the concept and it's owner in conjunction create the power of the mask. For example from top to bottom these masks are Furaha, Hofu, Hasira; Marcus's Joy, Fear, and Rage.
Another caster may have their own Joy, but it may not look like Marcus's Joy and it will definitely not have the same power.

Curses are to Witch Doctors and Shamans as Spells are to other casters. They are a word or phrase with intended purpose given some form or effect due to magical energy. Curses differ from spells in one important area though; where their power comes from. Think of curses like an infection or virus. They only become active within a host via attaching themselves to the victim's magical/life energy and using that to cast themselves. This not only save the caster much more energy it also drains that of their enemies.
