As the class of '81 begins to draw to a close, a problem begins to brew. Cathy had promised Kristen that I would be going out with her when she leaves Tech in June after graduation, and Sue told Jeanie that with Cathy gone she would be my girlfriend. Another problem was that no one was going to graduate on time with the failure of the Regents exams before graduation - nearly everyone had to repeat the failed class during summer school but overcrowding made sure that some had to retake their classes in September and graduate in January the next year though their diplomas were still date June '81.
Since March, Cathy has been training Kristen to be her BookRoom Replacement when she graduates. Sue and Jeanie were related as cousins. So the communications between the old/younger girls was ever present but not as the two groups. So they did not know that the other exist; Cathy did know about Jeanie and her crush on me but she thinks that after having that long talk with her ended her crush. She was wrong to think that.
Up to now within Tech (and even before outside of Tech) I was allowd to have several so-called girlfriends: Grace, Cathy, Juainta, Evadney and to some extent Sue, even Maria and Tonya before them. Then there was Duana, Cecilia, Cynthia, Lisa and several others that I could have let chase me but I didn't. But up to this point, it was an allowed practice for the girls to share this one boy - me. Now here they were just Jeanie and Kristen.
I just started going out with Jeanie during the summer with some extreme caution, her father could not know I as dating her and eventually having sex with her. But Kristen was a complete stranger. I've only met her a few times and she was all goo-goo gah-gah in seeing me. "You're Fernando!" She would squeal. Then she would get all huggie and touchy-feelie on me. This action made me want to avoid her.
And the differences between the two were vast. Jeanie was like me, though raised in a Chinese community, she lived in public housing within that community; Kristen was a light-skinn black girl who can pass of as white, she come from a very rich family where they owned their own home in Forest Hills Queens. Everything for Kristen was given to her; Jeanie had to earn everything she had. Though independent, Jeanie wanted to be the perfect wife to who she married (at the time me) while Kristen was totally independent but knew something was lacking in her life but she was not going to be supportive of anyone who as not supportive of her first. Kristen believed that if you threw enough money into a problem, it would go away; Jeanie had to deal with her problems in a more realistic way. Kristen was more interested in going out with the legend that I was, not the person who I was; Jeanie knew who I was and what problems I had to deal with, it was fine with her that I was a flawed person like everyone else - who just so happened to save her life not too long ago. In the situation I was in, Janie was willing to share me as a boyfriend with others, and if it continued, she would have shared me with Kristen. Kristen did not believe in sharing anything, especially a boyfriend.
So in September, when the last graduating class came in to get their delayed diplomas or make up class schedules, Cathy and Sue got their respective friends to introduce me to them as their replacement girlfriend. They figure that they would meet me at the BookRoom Storage facility. That is where they met. With a few exchange of words, the expected would happen. Only I can stop it. And like it the decision or not, I did. I had too.
