After swimming on third and fourth periods, I walked out of the locker room and headed straight to the elevator to head to the seventh floor for the lunchroom and some lunch. That is if I was not intercepted at the Bookroom storage by Sue Jane.
Sue was waiting by the door hoping for me to walk by from swimming, though depending if I was going to the computer room I would have went in a different direction. As soon as she saw me, she reached out grabbing my arm and hauling me into the Bookroom's main area where students would request for books or pay for lost books. At first I thought it was Cathy, but I quickly realized that is was Sue instead. As far as I was concerned, this was odd for her to do, as it is something Cathy would normally do instead. From there she continues taking me to the rear of the storage vault area where textbooks were stored by subject.
"You mind?" I tell her, "I was going to get lunch."
"I know you are, and (the freshman) Leroy (Chang) will be here with it." She tells me, "But first I have to have a long talk with you."
"About what?" I ask as we reach the last section of assorted books, the usual English Reading Material under various titles and authors.
To ensure our privacy she slides one of the rolling shelves to cover the corridor leading to the space, a difficult thing to do if it is loaded with books.
"There." She says as she looks down the corridor of shelves in the other direction turned into a semi private maze. She continues, "How long have we known each other?"
"Since 1969, in P.S.7 Kindergarten class. We have been in most of each other's classes until high school and I went to Julia Richman for a year while you and some of the others went to Tech and then I transferred to Tech the following year and met up with you and the others again." I answer her
"And in all that time have I ever told you that you had to do something?" She asks.
"That depends, but yes you have though I admit they were tiny things." I answer.
"Well besides all that. Have I ever asked you to do me anything that was big and major?" She says and asks.
"In those terms, no." I answer.
"Then today I will." She says.
"Alright, what is it and what is it in for me?" I ask.
"Everything in its time, Fernando. First, in all this time we've been together what would you consider me as? What would you consider me as right now?" She asks.
"Well, we were friends and at time maybe boyfriend and girlfriend in some limited sense. But as for what we are now? I don't know. Friends maybe, but we're not what we used to be." I tell her.
"Then you can trust me in what I have to tell you. Right?" She asks.
"Maybe." I tell her.
"Fernando." She just says.
"OK, I'll leave it as such that I do." I say to her.
"I need you to be quiet for the time I'm telling you this." She says.
"Alright..." I reply.
Sue just gives me a mean look before she begins.
"Now. What I have to say is not easy so I need you to be quiet and listen up." She says. I just nod at her. "Good." She continues, "That girl you're going out with. She's nothing but bad news, not because of who she is but who she is tied too."
"I already know that." I tell her.
"I told you to shut up." She tells me sternly, adding, "You'll have your say when I am done." I just look at her as sternly as she does me. She continues, "We all know about Ms. Catherine Townsend and who she is 'dating.' That is the problem. He is part of the Brooklyn Branch of the Black Mafia that has its roots in Harlem. You keep messing around with Catherine, and they are going to get you."
"Sue. I already know that. I also know that Randal is abusing Cathy and I'm trying to get him to stop." I tell her.
"And in doing so, you are going out with her." She says, "You need to stop being every helpless girl's knight in shining amour."
"Look. Cathy and I started out as friends, she helped me and still does get about the place, in case you have not noticed, I'm still partially blind from that accident in Richman!" I tell her, "From there we continued to become boyfriend and girlfriend but I can assure you that it was not intentional."
"You looking to end this before you get hurt?" She asks.
"No." I answer.
"No? You're going to get hurt." She says.
"I'll try my best not too." I reply.
"Not good enough." She points out.
"What is this sudden interest in me?" I ask.
"There are many out there who do not want to see you get hurt." She answers.
"I doubt that. No one in this damned school has cared about my well being. Everyone here is in it for themselves and sees me as a means to an end." I tell her.
"Including Catherine?" She dares asks.
"Except Cathy. She is the exception to the rule." I answer.
"There are more exceptions to the rules than you would think or know." She says.
"Like who?" I ask.
"My cousin for one." She answers.
"Who's your cousin?" I ask.
"Well, she's the little girl you saved from drowning in the pool a couple weeks ago." She answers.
"Jeanie's your cousin?" I ask.
"She is." Sue says, "And she cares for you a lot. In fact, I dare say that she is in Love with you, even if you hadn't saved her from drowning, she's had a crush on you since you two met in swimming class last year."
"Even she told me that things would not work out if we started dating because she is Chinese and I'm not. Just like you used to tell me the same thing years ago." I tell her.
"Yes, that is true but also in time back then I let you have me like I have let no one else have me. You are my first and only, Fernando. If it weren't for our differences our parents would have been more accepting of us and who knows, we would still be boyfriend and girlfriend." She explains.
"You still in Love with me?" I ask.
"In Love? No, not totally. I know what we had and what happened for it to fall apart. But I do care about you enough to say and so anything for you, including to tell some of the Asian girls in this school that you're mine so they can keep their kitten paws off you." She lets out.
"What if I told you that I wanted sex from you here and now, would you?" I ask.
"I would. We'd just have to slide that other self over for some privacy and I would lift up my skirt and drop my panties for you." She points out.
"And Jeanie too?" I ask.
"I know she would. Probably faster than I would but her being a virgin, you might hurt her. I've heard about what you got in your pants. I'm impressed from what I hear." She says.
"So..." I try to say.
"So nothing. Jeanie loves you and so do I but right now things can not happen because of the way things are. And you are going to get hurt because of Catherine. So because of that I have to say this: The Triads and the Flying Dragons are going to give you some protection in dealing with Catherine's boyfriend. But that protection does not extend to everywhere and it is not going to last forever. You got that?" She says and asks.
"Yeah. I got that. Anything more?" I say and ask.
"Jeanie wants you to go out with her. I set up a date for you to pick her up this Saturday at the clock on Bowery and Canal at 10o'clock. Don't be late." She tells me.
I try to play it off that I was broke, "I have no money now or on Saturday."
Sue opens up the top three buttons of her shirt showing her pink lace bra underneath and pulls out a small change purse from inside her bra. She quickly opens it and pulls out four twenty dollar bills from a small roll of bills and stuffs them into my pants, "You now do."
I say nothing for the moment, accepting what had happened as it happened. Sue steps up to me, and inches up on her toes, planting her lips against mine. At the same time she puts her hands on belt loops on my hips to pull her self against me and grinds her groin against mine for a second. She then breaks off our contact.
"God, if Jeanie did not want you, I'd take you for myself again." She says.
"The both of you can have me if you like..." I started to say.
"I knew you would say that. And what I got to say to that is you might get your wish. Unlike most women, we Asian girls share our men because there was once a shortage of men not too long ago and we women decided to make up for the loss by sharing what we had left. Now there is a 50/50 mix but some old habits die hard."
"I see." I say more to my self than to her.
"Behave yourself. Leroy's probably outside with your lunch, I told him to wait until I tell him to come. Eat your lunch here and then go to class. You got that lesbo-bitch O'Rielly, right?" She says and asks.
"Yeah." I answer.
"Then I'll see you around." She says before moving the shelf back into place.
I stay there for a couple of minutes as I can hear her walk away. Nothing left for me do to but think things out. Leroy comes to where I was holding a covered tray to me.
"You're Fernando? This is your lunch." He says nervously as he reaches out to me with the covered lunch tray.
