There's definitely elements of both (ie, the dappled skin) but those brightly coloured limbs say otherwise. The colourful crest, however, IS to attract a mate.
I didn't exactly have nature and logic in mind when I first created these guys (like 6 or more years ago), especially concerning the colours, but I'll probably work something out. Comments like these are certainly helpful.
