I love SWAT Kats, alas, the fact that Hanna-Barbera only produced two seasons of this groundbreaking series and after more than two decades has done absolutely NOTHING with this awesome franchise is downright criminal! DX

I'd hate to say it, but the series was cancelled for the worst possible reason, not because it was too expensive to animate, not because it got bad ratings, not because they didn't think it could sell a toyline, but because parent watch groups complained that shows like it were too violent and they wanted more child friendly fare to park their brats in front of so they wouldn't have to worry about watching them. Essentially this show was replaced by Captain Planet.

I've look a bit into it and the "official" reason was because the merchandising that was supposed to hit store shelves as the show aired did not arrive in time to ride the wave of popularity of the show so it did not report the financial benefits the company wanted, but indeed the whole violence also played a role but from Ted Turner itself and because of congress and TV Network violence was a hot topic issue at the time.
Either way this enforces my distaste for censorship and busybody morality watch groups that want to ruin any form of artistic expression in media, so instead of giving people the freedom to chose regarding what kind of content their children may or may not watch (and exercise responsible parenthood) This "morality police" impose their will onto everyone else with "this offends me therefore no one gets to experience it, freedom of choice be damned!"

yeah, and regarding toys they missed a perfectly good opportunity a couple years ago. Jazwares started making some Hanna Barbara toys not too long ago, they made characters like Tom and Jerry, Fred Flintstone, Rosie the robot maid, and a couple others, but they didn't make the Swat Kats. The line ended after only about 2 waves but I really wish it has lasted long enough to make them.

That is quite a clueless move on behalf of Jazwares, they are appealing to the completely wrong demographic. Anyone who could care about Tom and Jerry, the Flinstones and the Jetsons were kids in the 1960s which means are around 60 to 70 years old now, that is not people who buy this stuff because "Geek Culture" was never a thing for them . Currently you have to appeal to people who were kids in the 80s and 90s and part of the geek movement. SWAT Kats, Captain Planet, PPG, Dexter's Lab, Cow and Chicken, etc are part of that generation of people who currently are adults and have nostalgia for such characters.

well,those old hanna barbara cartoons may date back to the 60's and 70's, but have been in reruns and had spin offs, remakes, and sequel shows made constantly since then. Plus the toy line was sold as "your favorite characters from the Boomerang Network," which is the channel that still shows those old cartoons to this day. The thing is the Boomerang Network totally aired Swat Kats at the time so they lost a golden opportunity to sell to kids who were actively watching the show.
