That's the thing, I don't look at their physical body as much as what their body language is saying. Lily's is saying "I'm scared, and vulnerable, potentially shy and don't want to be hurt" while Roxanne's is more "I'm protective, you will not hurt my sister, and I will put myself in harms way to make sure of that" To me, both are beautiful, but not because of anything physical. Instead of that, they're beautiful because both are in need of help, and don't need to be abused by whoever adopts them. It's one of the reasons why I loved the collection of the Lily and Roxanne pictures, because they were treated so well, and given so much after their adoptive father found them.

I love the update to Lilly, I think it gives her a lot more detail, whereas before she was washed-out compared to Roxanne. Speaking of, while Roxanne looks very similar to the old version, in this one she looks a bit "cleaner," whereas in the old one the inkblot over her eye looked more "natural," and the way her hair was made her look dishevelled and dirtier (as in, not having bathed in a while).
Overall I think the difference between digital and hand-touched is the biggest difference when it comes to the earlier version looking "dirtier" and the newer looking "cleaner." It's not to say that one is better than the other, it's just that both do something different with their styles.
It's hard to say the latter is an "improvement" over the other, because of how different they are. If I had to say something did improve, it's the way the pose looks in the newer version, with the change from an embrace across the waist to inter-twined arms. It gives a better sense of mood, and makes the overall image more modest, as the bit of extra "skin" in the earlier version detracted from the mood.

I don't want to say, 'improved' because that seems like an insult to your earlier works- and they weren't bad. I will say that one can tell these two drawings are from the same artist, so you definitely have a consistent style worked out- but the newer version does look more polished.

Been meaning to comment for a couple days, and... I'll have to mostly go with the same idea that the stylistic difference gap is such that it's hard to say to what degree you could consider it 'improved', as others have said by now too. I mean, it's not even the same art medium, although we have seen a few Copic pics in recent years to know how your style is with them now as well. (Not that even half of them have made it into your "Markers" Pool.)
Lilly's design has changed enough that I'd have to say she's physically a completely different design, with the personality still coming through the same, but it is a nice look you settled on. Is that intended to be a somewhat platinum shade of hair as it seems? (Although the pretty bow kinda clashes with the battered cardboard box they've found themselves in.)
If I had to make an actual complaint, it'd be that I far preferred the blotchier, less uniform markings on Roxanne's original design. They had more personality to them and looked more natural, or at least having seen them as they were compared to now they did. This is particularly true of the spot around the eye, from the shape right down to the way it intersected with the orange rather than being framed in the white. I do like the tied-back hairstyle here though. But in the end, she very much survives as a variation on the original design. Seriously though, maybe I'm being too critical over the change, but the splotch over the eye looks less feline calico, and more like a canine spot to me looking at old and new side by side.
