Friends in High Places

Zen woke up to the muffled sound of shouting. At first he just laid there. After about a minute of hearing what sounded like Ruby yelling at someone Zen rolled over. He bumped noses with Black making him jump a little in surprise. After the shock of the surprise nose bump wore off Zen hugged Black. She blinked a couple times before smiling. Well good morning to you too. Feels good to be able to actually touch you. By the way you should really close the seal. Your power is in a weakened state. Don’t want to use too much and have you passing out again. Zen gave a nod in agreement. All gates close. Zen felt an odd sensation. His energy was much lower than he thought. Black chuckled. Don’t worry. You will regain your energy over time. I’m surprised you are awake already. With the amount of energy you used last night, I thought you would have slept for 3 days at least.

Zen looked over at the door. I wonder what’s going on out there. Black gave a shrug. Only one way to find out. I really need to use the bathroom anyway. Yet another thing I will have to get used to. Zen giggled before getting out of bed. I’ll head to the master bathroom, why don’t you take the bathroom at the front. It’s a lot closer. Black nodded. I’ll check out what’s going on too. Zen went to the door and opened it. He was surprised to see Chaotic sitting in a chair just on the other side of the door. Um what’s going on?

Chaotic turned to Zen. It would seem that the magic council has noticed your magic use last night. The guard is in the living room trying to get back here. Ruby has been keeping them at bay but it seems like they are getting rowdy. I’ve been here making sure they didn’t bother you two. I wanted you to get your rest. Zen nodded. I actually was headed to the bathroom. Black was going to the one up front. Chaotic chuckled. Alright I’ll keep them busy. You two get yourselves ready. I’m sure they will have questions for you.

With that said Chaotic stood and moved his chair out of the way. Black darted past him and was around the corner before he could say anything. She could be heard shouting, OUT OF THE WAY, I GOTTA PEE! Zen and Chaotic both shook their heads. Zen made his way to the master bathroom. Chaotic joined Ruby in the living room. Zen and Black are both awake.

The men that were in the living room were dressed in black robes. They had white masks on. To Ruby they looked like a bunch of creeps trying to harass people. Chaotic however knew them well. He also knew most of the council. The men turned their attention to Chaotic. The one that seemed to be in charge stepped forward. Master Storm I thought your son was a white wolf, who was that black wolf? Chaotic gave a sigh. For the last time just call me Chaotic. I may be a master but being called master makes me feel like an old man. As for the little girl you saw run through here, well that’s a long story.

Black had stepped into the living room with a sigh. That was a close call, I almost didn’t make it. She then looked around the room and gasped. Um don’t take this the wrong way… you guys really need to get rid of those cloaks and masks. Chaotic looked at Black confused. What do you mean? Before Black could answer Zen walked around the corner on the other side of the room and froze. His eyes were wide and he started shaking. Black ran across the room to Zen and gave Chaotic a look that told him everything he needed to know. He turned to the guard. Everyone out of the house now! Before anyone even moved Zen started screaming. IT CAN’T BE THEM. THEY DIED. I’M SURE THEY DIED. THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT. The lights in the house started flickering. Zen’s power was rising again. His emotions fueling a fire that would be unstoppable if nothing was done. Black turned to everyone. RUN NOW! HE’S GOING BERSERK.

Everyone but Zen ran out of the house. Outside Chaotic saw a familiar face. Standing in the driveway was a rabbit with the fur pattern of a raccoon. She looked at Chaotic and sighed. What have you got yourself into this time? Everyone was now standing in the driveway as Zen came walking out of the house. Chaotic turned to the rabbit and chuckled. Looks like the guard is responsible for his abduction 4 years ago. I’d say it would be a good idea for these guys to get out of here. The rabbit looked at Chaotic and raised an eyebrow. Are you telling me that the guards cannot handle a 5 year old having a temper tantrum? Black turned to the rabbit and chuckled. Look lady that 5 year old wiped out a town not that long ago. If he keeps getting upset like this I’m sure he could take anyone you throw at him.

The rabbit gave a sigh. Alright Chaotic what’s going on here? Chaotic shrugged. I’ll have to get back to you on that. For now we need to get Zen to calm down. Looks like the guys in the cloaks are triggering his anger. We need them to either ditch the outfits or get out of here. Chaotic turned to the rabbit. Lucy please. We don’t want to hurt a kid do we? The rabbit shrugged and gave a heavy sigh. Report back to the council. Chaotic and I will handle things from here. The men in the cloaks nodded before vanishing. Zen looked over at the rabbit and growled. YOU’RE THE LEADER. ALL GATES OPEN! Zen’s body erupted in light. He held his right hand out and a cut formed in the palm. Blood flowed out forming a 3 foot sword.

Chaotic looked at Ruby and Black. You guys need to get back. Black nodded and grabbed Ruby’s hand leading her behind the garage. Chaotic then turned his attention to Lucy. I hope you brought your weapon with you. Lucy looked shocked. She pulled out a whip. You think I will need to use Peacekeeper on a kid? Chaotic shrugged. I’m going to grab my swords from in the house. Stay on your toes. Zen may not look like much but his strength is on par with an arch mage. He is the one that caused the quake last night. Lucy gasped. Your swords are going a little far. I don’t care how strong the kid is, pulling out Chaos and Destruction is going too far. Chaotic shrugged. Don’t blame me if Zen cuts you in half. With that said Chaotic vanished.

Lucy turned just in time to have Zen swing his sword just missing her. When the sword hit the ground it caused a shockwave sending Lucy flying a short distance. Her eyes were wide and mouth open. Zen’s sword of blood was acting like an amplifier. It cut the ground as well as everything ten feet in front of him. Before Lucy could react Zen was in front of her again with his sword above his head. Chaotic got between them just in time. He was able to parry causing a crater in the ground. Both Zen’s eyes were glowing. Lucy had now regained her composure. She moved quickly to get beside Zen. Once she was close enough she used a spell. Dispel, as soon as the word was spoken Zen’s blood sword dissolved. Before Zen could react Lucy cast another spell. Shock, Zen’s body was covered with electricity. Chaotic quickly grabbed Lucy and jumped back. What was that for Chaotic? He pointed at Zen. The electricity covering his body stared pooling in his right hand. Black came running from behind the garage and tackled both Chaotic and Lucy.

Just as they hit the ground a huge bolt of lightning shot over them. Black got up and ran over to Zen hugging him. These guys aren’t bad Zen. We are safe here. No one will hurt you. Zen looked at Black and started crying. But they had the black cloaks and masks. Black shook her head. These guys are different. Black hugged Zen tighter. All gates close. Zen’s body stopped glowing. Black looked surprised. I wasn’t sure I could close the gates. Looks like since I have your blood running through me I can close them too. Zen dropped to his knees pulling Black to hers. He hugged her and started crying harder.

Ruby came out from behind the garage and gasped. This place looks like a war zone. Lucy walked over to Chaotic and slugged him in the shoulder. He could have killed us. Why the hell didn’t you tell me he could use elemental magic? And why didn’t my shock spell work on him? Chaotic shrugged. He absorbed your spell. Let’s take this conversation inside. Chaotic put his swords back into their sheaths and walked over the Zen and Black. He knelt down and picked them both up. He then made his way into the house. Once inside he went straight to the living room and sat down. On the way there Zen had passed out.

Once Chaotic was seated and had Zen and Black leaning against him, Black sat up. She turned her attention to Lucy who had just sat down on one of the 2 love seats beside the couch. Lucy sat on the love seat to the left and Ruby sat on the love seat to the right. Black sighed. I’m too young for this crap. I mean really I’m not even a day old yet. Lucy looked shocked. What are you talking about? You look the same age as your brother. Black laughed that quake last night was me being born. Or at least that’s what I’m going to call it. And I’m more like a copy of Zen. He used a resurrection spell to create this body. Lucy shook her head. There is no way a 5 year old could have the power to cast such a spell. The last recorded attempt at a spell like that took the lives of 8 mages. Black giggled. Those morons were trying to pull a soul out of the afterlife. That’s what killed them. If they just made a body they would have lived.

Lucy frowned. If that’s the case why isn’t Zen dead? He managed to put your soul in that body. Black grinned. I was already with him. I’m the one that taught him the spell in the first place. Lucy shook her head. That’s crazy. That would make you a demon. I don’t sense any demonic energy coming from you. Black laughed hard and started slapping her knee. I know right. This is awesome. I was purified and now I’m a normal little girl. Well a normal little herm girl anyway. Lucy’s mouth dropped open. She looked at Chaotic. He just nodded. I know its nuts, but it’s true. I’m sure the rest of the council will want to meet Zen and Black eventually. It also looks like there was a faction of the guard involved with Zen’s abduction 4 years ago. Lucy sighed. That would explain a lot. Night Fall has been missing for about 4 years. His guards seemed to disappear with him. Chaotic raised an eyebrow. Is that why I was offered a position on the council a while ago? Lucy nodded. Yes I recommended you. Night Fall’s disappearance left an imbalance of power on the council.

Chaotic shook his head and sighed. To think a member of the council would do something like that. Abduct a 1 year old and kill a whole family… it’s just horrible. Lucy fell back in her seat. What the hell are we going to do about this mess? Night Fall will have to be brought in. Black raised her hand. Um I don’t think that will be possible. Lucy looked at Black confused. What do you mean? Black shrugged. If he was in that city we were held in, then he’s dead. Zen’s power was not sealed before. It was too much for his body to hold. He wound up venting a small portion of his power. That power came out with enough force to level the city. When Zen woke up he was in a crater 10 miles wide. Lucy gasped. It’s not safe to keep him here then. Black shook her head. His power is sealed. As long as he uses magic on a regular basis he will never explode.

Lucy looked at Black. What about that power he was using earlier? Black shrugged. That was nothing. His power is in a weakened state right now. If he was at full power then this house and the ones around it would have been wiped out with the first swing of his blood sword. If you hadn’t guessed that weapon he used was using magic in a way that amplified what was put into it. From what I could see, he could use any element with that sword. Lucky for us he was just using force and not something that would explode. I didn’t even know he could do that with his blood to be honest. I guess we will have to keep an eye out for new abilities. Who knows what he will throw at us.

Chaotic looked at Lucy. I need a favor. We need to get Black registered. She is likely the only one that can stand up to Zen and calm him down. If he is going to attend school we will need her by his side. Lucy laughed. You think it’s a good idea to put him in school? What if he goes off again? Black shook her head. If you dummies would have left the stupid cloaks and masks at home we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Ruby chuckled. Dummies huh? You are sounding more and more like a little kid Black. Black huffed and turned her head blushing. I can’t help it. This body makes me feel weird. Besides if I’m going to be going to school with Zen I’ll need to act the part right?

Lucy sighed and shook her head. Alright I will see what I can do. We can go to the court house and have a file made up for Black. How long do you think Zen will sleep? Black giggled. That depends on how much energy he gets. His body will absorb energy from anything around him. That’s the big reason he has to use magic. If he didn’t the accumulation of energy in his body would be too much and then boom. Since he hadn’t recovered from the resurrection spell and he used magic again… I’d say he could be out for a while. If we gave him some energy I bet he would wake up pretty quick. Ruby looked confused. How would we give him energy? Black’s grinned. That’s easy, we could just shock him. Lucy gasped. You want us to shock a 5 year old? Black frowned at Lucy. You already did that outside. He was not hurt by your shock spell. Heat and other forms of energy will be absorbed by Zen. I might be able to absorb energy too. I don’t really wanna find out though.

Chaotic stood from the couch and turned to Zen. Lightning, a bold struck Zen. He didn’t even twitch. There wasn’t even any aftershocks of energy. Lucy stood there mouth gaping and eyes bulging. That shock would have killed an elephant! What the hell are you thinking? Black giggled. Zen spent a year in an electric chair. He could be struck by real lightning and be unharmed. Let’s get him outside and give him some energy so he will wake up. Ruby sighed as she stood up. Great a new party game… shock the sleeping pup.

Outside Lucy looked at Chaotic. You sure this is a good idea? I am a master with elemental magic. A higher level lightning spell could do some serious damage. Black giggled. Don’t worry about Zen. His body will absorb any energy you throw at it. Lucy shrugged pulling out her whip again. She held it out and began focusing. Heaven’s strike, with those words a huge cluster of lightning bolts struck Zen. The lighting kept striking over the course of about 30 seconds. When the lighting stopped Zen groaned. He sat up and looked around. The ground around him was burned. What happened? Lucy gasped. I didn’t think that would work. He really is an amazing kid. Black laughed running over to Zen. Take it easy. You need to rest. I’m sure you are hungry too. Zen blinked a couple of times. Um why are we outside? And why is the ground burned? Lucy walked over and kneeled beside Zen. You don’t remember what happened? Zen shook his head. Last thing I remember was going to the bathroom. After that I’m drawing a blank.

Ruby put her hand over her face. Great another thing to look forward to… blackouts. Oh well, we will have to call the school and Dr. Realm and tell them that Zen will be starting school on time after all. We will also have to tell the school that Black will be starting school as well. Let’s go inside and make some food. I’m sure we all have had enough excitement for one day… and it’s only noon. I suggest we have a quiet day to recover. Chaotic nodded in agreement. We will need to have a talk with Dr. Realm on Monday as well as talk with the court house about Black. For the rest of today and tomorrow we should just rest up. We also need to have someone come and fix the front yard.

With that said Lucy excused herself. She would go talk to the rest of the mages council about what had happened. Chaotic, Ruby, Zen, and Black would spend the rest of the day resting. Bed time came early. Everyone was exhausted both mentally and physically. They could only hope that things would start going better before school started.
