Chapter 1

It was early October as a 5'9" tall black furred wolf with three silver streaks running through his jet black hair was in the middle of gathering what he would need for a week long camping trip.  He was to be one of four chaperones from the school where his mother was the principal, that were taking a class of twenty six fourth, fifth and sixth graders to King's Mountain State Park for some time out of the classroom learning environment.

His name was Kage and even though he was only twenty four years old many of the teachers at his mother's school asked for him when they wanted a chaperone for a camping trip.  Their reasoning wasn't because his mother was their principal but because he could provide nearly all the equipment needed.  He was also good with cubs of all ages and able to teach the students new skills, most of which, unknown to the teachers, he'd learned from living in the woods for just shy of half his life.

Even though the black wolf had yet to unpack the trailer full of equipment from the last trip with a class of third graders from a sister school; he couldn't refuse his little sister who, being one of the fifth graders in this class, begged and pleaded with him to go.

"Hey big brother, you should have left by now," a five foot nothing, dark grey furred eleven year old wolf girl with long black hair said from his bedroom doorway, "You're supposed to be meeting us at the camp grounds after all."

"And you should have been on a bus to school by now Shara," the black wolf replied with a sharp toothed smile without facing his sister, "What are you doing here kiddo?"

"Mom wanted to drop off my stuff with you so she would have more room in the car for the other guys stuff since she's in the carpool," Shara replied as her tail continued to wag behind her causing her skirt to move slightly as it did, "I left it by the front door, which by the way you should really lock more often, someone could break in you know."

"And just what do I have in this place that anyone would want?" Kage laughed as he walked passed his sister mussing her hair a bit with his free hand, "Go on, mom's waiting for you and with the way she drives I'll be at the camp grounds well before any of you kids will be."

Kage climbed into his truck after finding a place for his sister's suitcase in the in the back seat since the covered bed was loaded with firewood, and headed for the camp grounds.  While the black furred wolf was driving towards the camp grounds with a home built trailer in tow, the students of the class were gathering at the school.

Within the class there were several different breeds of canines and felines, even a pair of mice and a monkey.  Of her classmates though, Shara was the only pure breed wolf and her classmates tended to shy away from her out of some unfounded fear that she would hurt them.  She had one very good friend in the class that she had known since they were in kindergarten together, an Alaskan malamute with bright blue eyes and almost the same dark grey fur as Shara, but with white belly fur that started mid throat, named Julie.  When compared to Shara, the young malamute looked sweet but had a bigger temper than her friend and most of her classmates combined.

"Alright class, listen up," the teacher, a tall lady leopard with white hair and graying fur, said after clapping her hands in a rhythmic pattern which the students mimicked, "You have your assigned riding partners so gather your gear and start loading the cars."

The students scrambled to the line of cars carrying small suitcases and book bags. Shara helped Julie get her things into the wolf's mother's car since the two would be riding together.  One of the fourth graders and a sixth grader would also be riding with them as per the rules set by the teacher so they both helped load their classmates' things too.  After half an hour of getting everything packed and settled with the parents who weren't a part of the carpool, the class left the school with their twenty six very excited students only a few minutes behind schedule.

Meanwhile Kage had just arrived at King's Mountain and parked his truck as close to the sites as he could get it and was taking a few minutes to enjoy the quite before the storm this new class would bring.  He leaned against the front of his truck with his eyes closed and breathing in the cool midmorning air while listening to the birds in the trees sing until he heard boots crunching in the loose gravel.

"Hey Kage, back so soon?" A tan furred German shepherd that was just taller than the black wolf and wearing a park Ranger uniform, asked with a friendly smile as he stuck out a hand.

"Yeah Tanker, got another class from mom's school," the younger wolf replied as he shook the shepherd's hand, making sure he didn't scratch the older man with his freshly sharpened claws.

"That's three classes in as many weeks.  How can you possibly sleep in the bed of that truck that much?" the Ranger asked with a laugh.

"Pretty easy with an air mattress and a good sleeping bag and don't forget it is covered," Kage laughed back as he began taking off his shoes.

"Still doing the 'wild animal' thing huh?" Tanker asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Tank, I lived in these woods with no contact with anyone but feral animals for half my life, so technically I am a wild animal and you know that no matter how much everyone else wants to, I can't deny it," the wolf replied running a hand through the middle streak in his hair as he stretched out his now freed toes.

"Could if you wanted to Kage, you are sitting here clothed and talking to me after all, big step up considering the way I found you after the first time you ran away from city life," the tan furred German shepherd replied with a more serious tone.

"Yeah, well, I'm still the same animal, just better at hiding it," the black wolf said with an equally serious tone, "And I was clothed then you dunce," he added with a smirk.

"You weren't the first time we met each other smartass," Tanker replied with a chuckle, "But the second time you weren't talking at all."

"The first time we met you had to put a tranquilizer dart in my leg just to keep me from hurting your boys even further than I already had, Jack put a second one in it before I clocked out," Kage said with a confident smile, "Care to try your luck again?"

"How you managed to not clock out after the first one I'll never know," the German shepherd said with a dazed tone, completely ignoring the challenge made in jest.

The two men continued to talk about what the black furred wolf had in store for this class as well as a few things that had changed in the park's schedule from the week before. After about twenty minutes of talking, Tanker went to the main gate to guide the convoy of cars bringing the students to the campsites they would be using while Kage got a tarp out to put all the kids gear on while they set up camp.

Once the students and their belongings were unloaded from all the cars the teacher explained her rules, made sure they knew what their group number was and such like that.  Kage took over after she finished and explained his own rules about the fire as well as not going anywhere without a buddy or without permission from an adult.

After the rules were explained they went about setting up the camp.  Kage helped where he was needed and talked to a few parents about what the students would actually be learning from him during the week.  He was a little shocked to find out just how many of the parents didn't really care for the idea behind the camping trip, thinking it would just be a chance for the students to play all the time and not actually learn anything.

After the camp was completely set up all of the parents who were only there to help set up left, leaving the teacher and the three adults who volunteered to chaperone with the twenty six extremely excited students.

"Okay, group five get the water jugs filled up, group three is on cooking duty, group one will be clean up," the lady leopard said with a tone that meant they shouldn't argue.

"Mrs. Melik, Mr. Kage said he needed help unloading the wood from his truck," one of the other chaperones, a tall and very muscular Bengal tiger, said in a quiet tone after seeing the black wolf carrying an arm load of wood down the path.

"Get a couple of the students who aren't working and tell them, you're a chaperone not my student anymore Mr. Samson; you haven't been for many years," the graying leopard said with a small chuckle before walking into the kitchen canopy to help the students who were setting up for dinner.

After dinner the whole class was told to go to the small parking area where Kage and Mr. Samson had parked their trucks as well as Mrs. Melik's car.  The small area had two huge logs on both sides that were laid on the ground to keep the gravel from washing into the other campsites that were on a lower elevation than the parking area.

"Okay, everyone onto one log, we're going to do some teamwork exercises," Mrs. Melik said with a wide smile.

"I remember doing this as a cub on the school playground," Mr. Samson said to Kage as the third chaperone stayed behind the log to catch anyone who might fall, "It's pretty tough to move one student from one end of a log to the other without them touching the ground, even more so since you're moving till everyone is back where they started."

"I can bet so, the class before this one would never pull that off," Kage replied with a chuckle, "Worst students I've had up here in a while."

"Was it really that bad?" the Bengal tiger asked with a concerned look.

"I'll say this much, they snared the teacher and left her laid out with her foot in the air for a while.  I was the one who ended up cutting her loose and had a field day with the students responsible after since she didn't want to," the black wolf said rubbing his eyes a bit, "They were also the loudest bunch I've had up here, the camp hosts complained about them to the rangers who then came and hollered at me."

"Wow, that really is bad."

"Oh it gets worse, two of the little buggers were dead set on making the trip miserable for everyone else since I wouldn't let them play in the fire.  Seems to me that the teacher was intent on letting them do whatever they pleased, which at third grade age is not the thing to do in the woods."

"No doubt there, I wouldn't let my daughter do anything like that if she was out here," Mr. Samson replied with a serious tone before the pair fell silent to watch the students.

The students were making an easy task of communicating what needed to be done to get each of their classmates to the next step of the log which made Mrs. Melik very happy.   When they got just over half the class moved one of the feline girls slipped and they had to start over.  After three more times having to start over because of someone's clumsiness or slick spots on the log they finally managed to return to the starting order with no one touching gravel.

They were so busy celebrating that they didn't even notice when Kage started talking to their teacher about a different game he'd brought the supplies for them to play while they were there.

As the last of the daylight left the sky, each student was given a glow stick necklace so they could be seen in the dark and Kage gave a demonstration on fire safety with a little bit of silliness mixed in that made the students laugh.  While the black wolf was tending a minor burn he'd gotten while waving a burning log around during the demonstration, he listened to the students as they played a game of 'one word at a time' while someone on the side was writing each word so they could hear the story all at once when they finished.  Making this game more interesting was the leopard teacher telling the students what type of word they had to use when it was their turn to add a word and a time limit for each turn.

"How is your hand Mr. Kage?" a sweet voice asked from behind him.

"It'll be okay by morning, I used to get a lot worse when I first started doing that demonstration, these days I barely feel it," the black wolf replied coolly as he turned to face the only female chaperone of the group besides the teacher.

The woman was a 5'4" tall beautiful husky wolf mix, made obvious only by the fact she had golden eyes instead of blue or brown.  Her light grey fur and platinum blonde hair were shimmering in the moonlight that filtered through the trees making it look as though she'd just come back from a swim.

"And what brings a city girl like you out here Ms. Melony?" Kage asked with a curious look.

"Oh, just figured that Mrs. Melik would need a hand with all the girls here, since they make up nearly three quarters of the class," the golden eyed husky replied staring at her shoes, before noticing Kage wasn't wearing any, "Why aren't you wearing shoes out here?"

"Same reason I never have out in the woods, I like to dig with my toe claws and it makes it easier for me to run," Kage chuckled at the woman's stunned expression on her face, "Should try it some time."

"But what about rocks and bugs and stuff?" Melony asked with a quiet yet panicked tone.

Kage simply shrugged and walked off using the same method their feral ancestors did, using only the balls of his feet, leaving his heels high off the ground as if he had paws.

"He's younger than both of us, but he's the bravest one out here," Mr. Samson said from behind the husky woman as Kage walked away from them.

As the students began getting to bed, most of them falling asleep as soon as their heads hit the pillows, Kage laid in the bed of his truck staring up at the stars through the trees after having taken the hard bed cover off and setting it up as a table for the adults to eat at since his fold away table fell apart on him.

When he closed his eyes could hear everything that moved around him, the wind blowing through the upper branches of the trees, a few conversations still going on in the camp between the girl's tents at the far end of the camp sites, and even the sound of four small feet heading in his direction from the camp sites.  He inhaled deeply putting his nose to its first task of the night instantly recognizing his sister's scent and the one of her friend Julie.

"Where are you two going?" he asked with a gruffer tone than he had meant to, earning a surprised yelp from the two young girls as they stepped next to his truck.

"Just to the bathrooms big brother," Shara replied seeing her brother's gold eyes glowing in the dark just over the bed's edge.

"Alright then, I'll just watch from here," the black wolf replied noticing that Julie was still clinging rather close to Shara after being scared by him, "Sorry if I scared you Julie, but you two should know better than to go without an adult this late at night."

"I-its okay, M-Mr. Kage, I'm just a little c-cold is all," Julie replied her eyes still shaking with fear even though she tried to hide it.

"Maybe I'll walk up with you, just to be sure," Kage said with a comforting tone just before jumping onto the gravel managing to keep his heels off the ground when he landed, his tail thumping on the truck bed's edge as he came down.

The young malamute seemed to lighten up and loosen her grip on Shara's arm as they walked to the bath house that stood just over half a football field away from the camp sites.  The two girls talked all the way to the door of the girls half of the bath house before they stopped and stared at Kage.

"What? I'm not going to follow you in if that's what you're thinking," the black wolf replied crossing his arms over his chest hiding part of the white shirt he wore.

"Would you make sure nothing is in there for us?" Shara asked with an uncertain tone.

"What has you two so scared? Shara you've been here before, you know there isn't much to be afraid of out here."

"For Julie, she's never been camping before," the small grey wolf whispered just loud enough for only her brother to hear while gesturing towards her friend who was visibly trembling.

Kage let out a heavy sigh and nodded, he understood very well how scary doing something for the first time could be, especially when it was for such a long time.  He knocked on the door a few times calling out to anyone that might be inside to warn them he was coming in before he actually went through the door after receiving no reply.  He made quick work of clearing the four shower stalls and six toilet stalls before stepping back out and holding the door open for the girls.

A few minutes later the three walked all the way back into the camp site and down to one of the 'girls only' tents guided by Julie's flashlight.  Once the two girls were back in their tent Kage walked back up to his truck and was about to climb into the bed when he caught site of one of the glow stick necklaces wandering towards the woods between two camp sites.

"This is going to be a long night," he muttered while rubbing his muzzle before taking off after the multicolored glow.

When he caught the glow he noticed the feline that was wearing the necklace looked as though he were still asleep and he wasn't responding to any of the black wolf's calls.  Kage's ears laid back in worry as he tried to figure out just what to do. Finally he just picked the young cat up and carried him back in the direction of the camp site.  When he got back he found the tent that was open, and woke the other feline boy that was inside it to inform him to keep an eye on his friend before closing the tent back up and finding Mrs. Melik's tent and telling her of the sleep walking incident.

The black wolf spent about an hour watching the sleep walking feline's tent before going back up to his truck and trying to get some sleep.  It was shortly after midnight when something tapping the tailgate woke him up.  When he looked over his chest he saw nothing at the tailgate, so he leaned over the edge and saw two female husky students staring up at him.

"You two need to go to the bath house?" the black wolf asked as he tried to rub off some of the tiredness he was feeling.

"No, we did a head count, one of our tent mates is missing," the red furred husky girl replied in a panicked voice which caused Kage's senses to jump into over drive.

"What species is she?" Kage asked running a hand through over the left most streak in his hair, "I promise I'll find her," he added when he saw the worried looks on the two husky pup's faces.

"She's a fox, we've already checked in the other tent she's not there either," the other pup responded sounding panicked, "Shouldn't you ask her name or something more important than her species?"

Kage ran the mental image of breeds and species among the students when they had arrived in the day light running each scent that he'd picked up as well and there was no fox among them, the closest thing he remembered was the red furred husky standing before him.  His face turned serious as he turned his golden eyes back upon the two husky pups.

"Back to bed you two and no more pranks, there are no fox kits among your classmates," The black wolf said seriously before jumping to the ground and guiding the two girls back to their tent while lecturing the two about pulling such pranks in the woods.

"Told you it wouldn't work, my brother has the best nose in the family," Kage heard his sister's voice say as he walked back to his truck which caused him to smile.

When he woke up to his phone's alarm going off it was still dark out, but he immediately got up and stretched out his tired body before getting his bathing supplies together and heading for the showers.  Once there he turned on the water and waited for it to heat up before he stripped and stepped in.  About half way through his shampooing he heard the door open.

"Mr. Kage, is that you in there?" the voice of Mr. Samson, the well muscled Bengal tiger chaperone, came from the door.

"Yeah, it's me," Kage replied quickly before rinsing his head off.

"I hear you had an interesting time last night, a sleep walker and a couple pranksters," the Bengal tiger said as he turned the water on in another stall.

"All I did with the pranksters was send them back to bed, how did you know about that anyway?"

"I heard you lecturing them while you walked them back down, what did they try to do?"

"They tried to trick me into thinking a student had gone missing, they goofed when they said she was a fox," Kage laughed as he shut the water to his shower off.

"I would have been freaking out, I don't know all the breeds in the class," Samson replied also shutting off his shower.

"Well you know them by name and what they look like, I know scents, species, breeds and  can sometimes do fur patterns if I see them, but I never got the hang of names and faces," The black wolf said with a chuckle once he was dry and dressed.

"I'd love to know how you do that some time, it would come in handy," the Bengal tiger said with a chuckle when he stepped out of his shower also dry and dressed.

"I'm a wild animal, comes instinctively to such critters."

"Care to explain that comment?"

"Nope, rather not," Kage said with a smirk at the shocked face the tiger made.

Once the students were awake the cooking group got working on breakfast with Melony while Kage and Samson followed Mrs. Melik's specific instructions in putting up a game called 'the spider web'.  This game would require the students to work as a team to pass each student from one side of the 'web' to the other without touching the rope and without using the same gap twice.  Once the web was up and the students had eaten the game was a foot.

Samson and Kage were on each end of the web to make sure no one got hurt from falling through the web while Melony and Mrs. Melik were watching and giving little hints here and there about what the groups might try.  Kage had already told several of them to be careful with his sister, but it was her who jumped through one of the higher holes and into the waiting arms of her teammates.  She got called for her tail hitting the top most line of the gap though so they had to start over.

Even several hours and a few school lessons later the students refused to give up on the task of getting the whole team through the web.   Kage eventually made his way down to a stream that ran behind the campsites, it wasn't terribly deep, but one would most certainly want to take any electronics or important documents out of their pockets before getting in just to be safe.

He climbed out onto a rock face and lay down with his feet facing the water, rested his head on his arms, closed his eyes and simply listened to nature around him, not even flinching when a buck tugged at his fluffy right ear with its teeth.  The black wolf simply reached up and ran a hand along the animal's muzzle without thinking twice.

"Hello my friend, I didn't think you'd visit me this time," Kage said with a quiet chuckle as the deer nuzzled against his cheek.

Kage stood and counted the points on the deer's antlers before taking hold of its muzzle and tilting it so he could look his friend in the eye.

"You went and grew a couple new points in your rack," He said with a chuckle as the deer shook his head roughly before a scream of excitement startled both the deer and Kage.

The deer quickly moved behind Kage but didn't run off as the wolf had expected.  Both stood and stared at the young red husky that had tried to pull a prank on the black wolf the night before.

"Why are you down here alone?" the wolf asked sternly as he felt the deer's wet nose against his hand and a couple of the points in his antlers press against his back.

"Mrs. Melik sent me so you could get the grill rack on the fire since I saw you come down here," the young husky girl said from the opposite bank of the stream, "Are you going to bring him back to camp?"

"That will be up to him not me, now go tell Mrs. Melik that I'll be there shortly, and that I'd like to have a few words with her."

The young girl ran off up the hill back towards the camp sight her curled tail wagging so hard it looked as though it might fly off.  Kage asked the deer if he would come to the camp, but it shook its head roughly and turned away from him and ran off into the woods.

When he returned to the main part of the camp he was bombarded with questions about the deer and the stream but he simply ignored each question while Mrs. Melik and the other two adults simply tried to figure out if the story was true.  The black wolf admitted the story was true only once all the students were eating their lunch and well distracted, he also reaffirmed his rule of no student going anywhere alone with Mrs. Melik before sitting down to his own lunch next to Ms. Melony.

"Mr. Kage, I don't think it would be a good idea to bring a wild animal so close to camp," the golden eyed husky said sounding more horrified than angry at the prospect.

"Ms. Melony, that buck chose not to come here, I can't change his mind, after all he has more points on his head than I do in my mouth," Kage replied drawing a laugh from Samson and Mrs. Melik, "Besides, you're in the woods, you're surrounded by wild animals whether you see them or not, myself included."

This comment drew a whole new round of laughter as the golden eyed husky sat there pouting like a five year old pup.  As the day went on the students spent time at the stream, Kage made sure no one went looking for his deer while they were there, also making sure in the process that no one drowned in the shallow water.

Before the day ended completely Kage set up his game after having Mr. Samson move his truck to the other side of the small parking area.  This game was nothing more that a ton of rat traps and a rope marking where the students couldn't go, the parking lot logs blocked the other side. It was a game of trust since the one walking through the mouse traps would be blind folded and led by verbal communication only.

Shara heard the rules of the game and immediately volunteered to be the first one steered through the 'minefield' by her friend Julie.  It didn't take long for the malamute's nerves and the chatter from the other students to get the young wolf girl snapped by one of the traps.  The other students gave it a go, each pair failing to make it across and causing them to feel a little upset.

"Mr. Samson, care to guide me through?" Kage asked after hearing some of the students saying it was impossible.

"If you trust me, then I'll give it a go," the large tiger responded with a grin.

In only a few minutes the black wolf was through the field of traps without setting off a single one.  Samson was using the degrees of a compass and pace sizing to guide the wolf through, proving that Kage's internal compass was dead on and he could take directions very well.  The black wolf not wearing shoes on his way through drew a great deal of attention from the students though none volunteered to try it when asked.

"Big brother, did you really trust him enough not to wear shoes?" Shara asked as the group walked back down to the camp after the students gave it a few more goes, several making it through.

"I had no reason not to trust him, plus he and I had a plan going in as you saw," Kage answered with a chuckle.

Later that evening Kage went over the fact that they would be going on a hike to the King's Mountain visitor center early in the day and after lunch they would hike the battle ground trail before going back to the campsites for dinner, making a day of the hike and history of the mountain itself.  This all went on while the students were given new glow sticks to wear, and the clean up crew was in the kitchen cleaning with the help of Mr. Samson.

Kage stayed up a couple extra hours to keep an eye out for the sleep walking feline boy before going to sleep in a chair by the fire around midnight.  When he woke up just before day break he revived the fire and did a quick tent check to make sure he hadn't missed the sleep walker.  He found the young calico tied at the wrist to his tent mate by a shoe lace and still sound asleep.

The black wolf then went about setting everything up for the cook crew for breakfast so things would go faster once he started waking everyone up, going as far as having everything out for them ready to start cooking before he made his way to the two chaperone tents and the teacher's tent.  Once the adults were all awake, Kage started on getting the students up.

"Mr. Kage, I'll ask that you don't set things up like this again before the students are awake," Mrs. Melik, the leopard teacher of the three grade level class, said as he walked back into the kitchen.

"I'm just trying to get them started so they'll have more time for the hikes we had planned for today ma'am," the black wolf replied scratching at the base of his left ear a little and letting out a nervous chuckle when she glared at him, "Won't happen again ma'am."

Once breakfast was done and the kitchen cleaned, each student got their best walking shoes on, most only just now piecing together that their wolf chaperone had not been wearing shoes since they arrived.  Kage gave each adult a walkie-talkie so he could lead the way but still know whether or not he needed to stop.   The students were rowdy and extraordinarily talkative but the black wolf managed to spot and point out a few feral animals as they made their way to the visitor center.

When they arrived at the visitor's center the students stopped off at the restrooms before sitting down to watch a fifteen minute movie about one of the battles that took place on King's Mountain before taking a guided tour of the 'self guided' exhibit that showed more details of the battle from the film.  The rangers in the center even ate lunch with the students and continued to answer their questions.  Kage got on the phone in the station and asked to have a couple carpool vans on standby while the students ate.

"Tank, I'm not about to march twenty six kids down three trails in one day, a few of them barely made it up here, the battle ground trail is just long enough to get the vans here," Kage said into the phone he had the German shepherd on, "Come on, please?"

"Alright Kage, I'll do what I can, just don't expect much this isn't like getting together a few horses for you after all, we may not have them," the German shepherd said with a tone that said he'd given up trying.

"That's all I'm asking bud, if we can't get vans I don't mind horses," the black wolf replied with a chuckle.

"Now you know that is never gonna happen wolf boy, last time there was a horse near you it nearly bucked it's rider off," Tank replied with a hearty laugh.

"Well I did scare the hell out of it, but what did you expect me to do, the thing was making a straight charge at me," the black wolf said with a more serious tone, "I don't particularly care for the idea of getting run over after all."

"You barked so loud you scared the shit out of four rangers fifty yards away from the horse, who was still twenty yards from you!  I'll get on tracking down a couple vans for you if I can get three I'll send them," Tanker replied before hanging up the phone.

After lunch was finished the class of twenty six and its four chaperones started down the battle ground trail with two rangers, a mountain lioness and a rather tall mouse, leading the way and talking about the events that had happened in the area while Kage and the other adults made sure no one strayed from the group.

"How is it you have so many connections here?" Samson asked as he and the black furred wolf walked behind the class, "I mean having the rangers guide this hike and the tour of the exhibit is kind of impressive."

"Been here too much I guess," Kage answered with a short chuckle.

"I bet this has gotten a little boring to you of late," the Bengal tiger asked gesturing to the two guides.

"Yeah, a little anyway, these two are usually more fun than the others though," the wolf said running a hand through the silver streaks in his hair.

"I've been meaning to ask, are those streaks in your hair natural?"

"You tell me," Kage replied stopping and showing the silver hair that went all the way to silver fur under it that went to the skin beneath them, "Got them from my grandfather on Mom's side, he had four though, one on each cheek in the fur and two in his hair between his ears.  My uncle from her side has two of them; they go from the outside of his eyes up to the closest point of his ears."

"It's an odd pattern to see in a wolf, do you know what actually caused them to be there, or are they just there?"

"Doesn't matter to me what caused them, they look cool so I don't hide them," the black wolf said with a chuckle as the two men caught up to the class, "If I ever have a boy hopefully he won't want to either."

"What makes you say that?"

"Seems that if the father has them so will every son, my grandfather was one of three boys, all three had the stripes in some way."

"That's actually kinda cool, you guys could be your own breed," Mr. Samson said with a chuckle.

As the hike came to an end Kage got the students separated into the vans sending one adult in each van with the rangers.  He informed Mrs. Melik that he would be back at the camp later with a quiz the students could take to see how close they paid attention.

When the students arrived back at camp most climbed into their tents and took a nap after a long day of walking and learning.  About an hour later Kage arrived with one of the park rangers and a small stack of papers that had the quiz on them.  All the students passed the quiz but Shara and Julie were the only two perfect scores in the class and once again the students were trying to figure out how to get their team through the spider web.

Day fell to night and the students huddled around the fire listening to a ghost story their teacher was telling them while Kage was in the woods shaking trees and making noises to make it seem more real.  He could hear the teacher's voice even with his distance from the campsite and took his cues from the story and would chuckle lightly when he heard the students yelp in surprise.

"Oh I am so mean," The black wolf said before letting out a howl that drew screams from the class, more so from the feline students, and running off towards a different area in the woods to make different noises.

When the story was done the students scurried off to bed while the adults stayed up a little while longer to comfort any students that might have been frightened too badly.

Kage's Camping Trip 3
I'm really out of my comfort zone as far as writing goes with this, I really want to know if I did good, bad or otherwise. There is more to this story but I want to see what people think before I post the rest.

(This is an all clean story so don't get your hopes up for sexy :P)

Well, it was pretty good for a first chapter, does a nice job of setting up the world and the characters. Kinda felt like you were harping a bit too heavily on the point that Kage had spent a lot of time living in the wild without really going into how or why, almost felt like this would be a follow-up to another story that goes into more detail there. Other than that, though, it was very nicely done, I rather enjoyed reading about all the little events along the trip and how Kage reacted to them.

Bit of a personal suggestion, if I may, you might want to work descriptions of characters into the story a bit more organically, so instead of saying that Kage is 5'9'' with black and silver fur the first time you mention him, you could work bits of that description into passing comments about him in the narration.

All in all, I thought you did well here, and I'd encourage you to keep writing if you're interested in it. :-)

tried that once 'bit by bit' description thing once in one of my large cast fanfics, didn't work so well for me, kept forgetting who looked like what in the long of it, haven't tried it on a small cast yet so I'll keep it in mind. :)
